...Archie R. Scott, Jr. Ethics Case Project 1 Dr. N. Amoah Introduction As the Chief Financial Officer for Camp Industries, I am overall responsible for the information contained in the Financial Statements for the company that shareholders use in making investment decisions and creditors use in making credit decisions. Camp Industries is the defendant in a class action suit filed in the amount of $44 million. After an informal conversation with in house legal counsel, I learn that it is remote that the company will win this lawsuit and our counsel feels that we will probably lose $30 million. Upon sharing this information with a co-worker, it is pointed out that accrual of loss contingencies for unsettled litigation is rare, in practice. My co-worker also points out that if we disclose that management believes that it is probable that Camp Industries will lose a specific dollar amount, that this could serve as ammunition for the opposing legal counsel. His opinion is that a loss should not be accrued and recorded until a final settlement has been reached in the lawsuit. This ethical dilemma deals with loss contingencies. According to our textbook, “a loss contingency is an existing, uncertain situation involving potential loss depending on whether some future event occurs”. (Spiceland, Sepe, & Nelson, 2012) In dealing with loss contingencies, two criteria must be determined, the likelihood that the event will occur and the estimation of the dollar amount of the...

...Case analysis 3 Chao Yao Major case 1 Adelphia Communications Corporation 1. What are the facts? In September 2005, the SEC charged Dearlove, a certified public accountant and formerly a partner with the accounting firm Deloitte& Touche LLP, with the improper conduct resulting in a violation of applicable professional standards. On July 24, 2009, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia supported the finding of the SEC that Dearlove engaged improper professional conduct. SEC found that Adelphia’s financial statements were not in accordance with the general accepted accounting principles and Dearlove violated general accepted auditing standards. The Adelphia communications Corporation was one of the largest cable television companies in the United States. Prior to 2000, the SEC found large amount Co-borrowed debt inside the company and its affiliated entities. After the big Enron scandal, SEC required public company to disclose the related-party transactions. As Adelphia disclosed its obligations as co-debtor with the Rigas entities, the stoke price of company declined sharply and finally was delisted from the NASDAQ. 2. What are the ethical issues? Dearlove had engaged in unreasonable conduct, such as approval of the Adelphia’s method of accounting for related-party transactions. His behaviors resulted in a violation of applicable professional standards. Deloitte, who engaged in auditing Adelphia, did not issued a fair auditor’s report. Adelphia...

...The request being asked by the general manger is this scenario would be considered unethical within proper accounting standards, as well as against tax law. Both IRS Circular 230 as well as the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct provides proper guidelines for explaining why the omission of this income would be unethical. Both sources also explain what is expected of a tax preparer (practitioner) in a situation such as this. Section 10.21 of Circular 230 states that if a practitioner knows a client has not complied with the revenue laws of the United States, that practitioner must then advise the client of the consequences as provided under the Code and regulations of such omission. Section 10.22 of Circular 230 would also apply to the given scenario. It states that a practitioner must exercise due diligence “in preparing or assisting in the preparation of, approving, and filing tax returns, documents, affidavits, and other papers relating to Internal Revenue Service matters.” (Treasury Department Circular No. 230, pg. 19, 2014) We as practitioners in this situation would not be applying proper due diligence if we were to carry forward in filing the tax return for The Gallery. We would be facing penalties, and even the possibility of losing our CPA license depending on the severity of the omission. AICPA Code Rule 201, General Standards is the corresponding rule for Section 10.22 of Circular 230. It includes four standards for professional practice for all AICPA members: professional...

...Ethics in Accounting Linh Pham University of Mount Olive Author Note This research paper was prepared for ACC483, taught by Professor Henry Singletary. Ethics in Accounting Ethics in Accounting has recently attracted a lot of attention in the field of business. Based on my knowledge, ethics in accounting are the behavior or actions that doesn’t allow for intentionally inaccurate and false in accounting practices. This is quite complex because we not only have to follow the accounting rules, but also need to make decisions based on the moral or ethics principles. However, ethics varies by cultures, individual perceptions, religion. For example, what seems about right in one country could be totally wrong in another country. Or what you think is right may actually be wrong. Therefore, it’s really difficult for us to follow the same ethics principle and apply those principles to ethics in accounting practices. In this paper, I will bring a thorough discussion of how to make accounting behaviors become more ethical. Ethics in Accounting is what we really need to take into our consideration in this era, especially after the financial and accounting failures of many big firms such as Enron, WorldCom, AOL, Global Crossing, Tyco, Lehman and AIG. As a matter of fact, experts and analysts are trying to find out the root causes of these failures. It is also significant to realize that more and more fraud cases are detected in this era. Therefore, there is a big question that...

...Enron Corporation case study • The Enron debacle created what one public official reported was a "crisis of confidence" on the part of the public in the accounting profession. Lists the parties who you believe are most responsible for the crisis. Briefly justify each of your choices. The debacle of Enron, a US firm is looked upon as the worst debacle and fall out in the history of US bankruptcy filed cases. There are many parties involved when it concern to Enron debacle, which was accorded to accounting instability and the compromising factor of accounting profession itself. Out of the many parties in the league and the major force behind the debacle of Enron concern Andersen's, the accounting and auditing firm that once deserved name in the industry for its conscience in accounting professional services and auditing. As the case relates to, accounting audit for Enron is attended by Andersen's since long enough. However, the interesting feature is that some compromise in the profession of accounting services by Andersen's was notable, given that there are noteworthy feature of stock manipulation, especially in financial statements of Enron attended and audited by Andersen's. The statement and restatement of Enron also gives some probable indication for manipulation of accounting, where debate and counter debate in that regard from the prying eye of the media was a common feature. Thus, the involvement of Andersen's in Enron consultancy and professional auditing makes it...

...Affect Being in the accounting profession for close to eight years, I have seen how large of a role ethics plays. While I have never done or been asked to do anything that could be considered unethical, I have come to realize that in accounting there is a lot of gray area. Many principles are left for interpretation and in some cases little guidance is given. In these cases ethics becomes of the upmost importance. Early in the chapter, Mark Cheffers and Micael Pakulauk raise the question of why ethics has become a part of the CPE program. This question might suggest that the accounting profession is inherently unethical or dishonest. This, of course, is not the case. Instead, ethics, or ethical behavior, is the solution to navigating through a complex and changing profession. Out of all the business disciplines, accounting must be the one that keeps all others in check. I have always felt that the role of an accountant is to safeguard the company and to provide an accurate picture of the health of a company. In order to provide this level of service, an accountant has to do it using intrinsic motivation instead of having to be compelled. Because of all the recent scandals involving accountants, it has become ever more important to have a foundation based on sound ethical practices. When confronted with a gray area in accounting and interpretation is needed, if you are bound by ethics and honesty, the outcome will be for the greater good instead of satisfying...

...Accounting and Ethics DO ETHICAL STANDARDS EXIST IN ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENTS? Purpose: This analytical report is a required assignment in Kimmerly Brady’s Business 205 course. Due to time constraints the primary data (survey) required for the report were gathered in a limited fashion. A survey was developed, an a procedure was considered; however, the responses are the results of only ten collected surveys. The responses are only included to demostrate a n understanding of primary data usage. The purpose of this report is to convey the message that ethics are the foundation of the accounting profession. In order to maintain discipline & order in the professional realm, rules of ethics are not satisfactory enough to ensure the integrity of Accountants. Education and training in ethical matters should be mandatory for Accountants; evaluation and monitoring of their adherence to these rules is climacteric for maintaining standards. Ethical codes of conduct and compliance of these codes should be required in today’s accounting firms for honorability to exist. CPA’s are licensed practitioners, who as Accountants express opinions about financial statements. The globalization of business operations and technological advances have radically changed how accountants work. New ethical issues have been raised by this ...

...Enron Corporation (Case 1.1) Most of us work from rags to riches but this is not the case of the Enron Corporation. Instead of becoming the nation’s greatest company, Enron instead laid claim to being the largest corporate bankruptcy in the history. The greediness and egotism wiped out the honesty and integrity that should instill on the persons who were involved in this case. Arthur Edward Andersen built his firm, Arthur Andersen & Company, into one of the largest and most respected accounting firms in the world through his reputation for honesty and integrity. His motto was “Think straight, talk straight” and he insisted that his clients adopt that same attitude when preparing and issuing their periodic financial statements. Arthur Andersen’s auditing philosophy was not rule-based; instead he invoked a substance-over-form approach to auditing and accounting issues. He avidly believed that the primary role of the auditor was to ensure that clients reported fully and honestly to the public, regardless of the consequences for those clients. Ironically, Arthur Andersen & Co.’s dramatic fall from eminence resulted from its association with a client known for aggressive and innovative uses of “accounting gimmicks” to window dress its financial statements. Enron Corporation was the second largest client of the firm and was involved in large, complex transactions with hundreds of special purpose entities (SPEs) that it used to obscure its true financial condition and...

Ethics is an important aspect of business in today’s enironment. Sometimes management ignores or leaves to state laws to govern the code of ethics within a company. Companies have faced a lot of issues regarding ethical situations in modern times. According to Baker (2012) contrary to the popular belief of the recent global financial crisis resulting from failures of accounting ethics, he argues that there is not enough evidence to support this connection. 2.0 Accounting ethical breaches and its impacts Breaches of the accounting ethical policies have become a source of concern for the firms today. The proper application of IFRS and GAAP standards is vital for each firm. In recent years as more scandals have come into the spotlight firms have taken more and more internal measures in addition to the policy making at the governmental level to ensure breach of consumers’ trust and laws does not take place in the future. There has been a tremendous increase in the interest in accounting ethics (Cowton, 2013). 2.1 The Scandal of Enron...
