Achilles and Odysseus
(An analogy of Achilles and Odysseus)
The author Homer wrote about two very significant epic heroes. Those heroes were named Achilles and Odysseus. Achilles and Odysseus have many similarities along with differences. Homer wrote about these two specific epic heroes for a reason. Achilles plays a key role in The Iliad, whereas Odysseus has an essential role in The Odyssey. Achilles and Odysseus are the same in a sense where they both are war heroes, they both sexually use women, and neither of them think twice before killing somebody that wronged them in any way. Odysseus spends ten years away from his wife with the goddess calypso. While Achilles takes Briseis as a prize for winning the war. Neither of them plan on doing anything honorable to these women. Achilles tends to treat women as his “prize” more than Odysseus does. In The Iliad Agamemnon commands Achilles to give him Briseis. Achilles doesn’t like this, and tells Agamemnon, “What a worthless, burnt-out coward I’d be called if I would submit to you and all your orders.” (Lines 342-343). Achilles is enraged at Agamemnon for wanting his prize. Odysseus and Achilles both like to sexually use throughout both of these books.
Neither Achilles nor Odysseus even think twice before killing someone who crossed them. Odysseus is anxious to slaughter all of the suitors that are wanting to marry his wife while he’s gone. Whereas Achilles is quick to jump in and kill Hector after he kills his best friend Patroclus. After Odysseus slaughters the suitors the text says, “Odysseus scanned his house to see if any man still sulked alive.” (Homer, The Odyssey, Lines 406-407).
