In Homer’s Iliad, the greater hero is Achilles. Achilles is a passionate and determined fighter whose bravery is admirable. Achilles is full of great qualities that make him a real hero. One heroic quality of Achilles is his assertive personality. This is shown throughout the entire story. It is first shown when Achilles gathers the entire Greek army, and the prophet tells everyone the reason the soldiers are dying is because of Agamemnon not returning Chryses, Apollo’s priest, to her father. Achilles is furious that Agamemnon wants to take Achilles’s war prize, since he has to return his own. Achilles also tells Agamemnon that he doesn’t think it is fair that he gets to have the better prize when it’s Achilles doing all the fighting. Achilles doesn’t back down and tells Agamemnon that what he is doing is shameless and cowardly. This is heroic because Achilles knew that it wasn’t fair for Agamemnon to act this way. Achilles wasn’t afraid to express how he felt, not even to his own commander. Achilles had all the right to be angry with Agamemnon since he didn’t have a reason to fight but was there to support Agamemnon and to be insulted by him was unacceptable. Another trait that makes Achilles a great hero is that he is a skilled warrior. This is shown when he single-handedly kills every Trojan warrior in his path, after Hector kills his beloved friend Patroclus. Whenever Achilles fights he fights like no one else. Achilles would kill 1000 Trojan soldiers in a day while the average Greek soldier was lucky to kill five Trojan soldiers. Achilles was the fastest and best fighter the Greeks had. Not to mention he defeated the river-god on his pursuit to kill Hector. This all proves that Achilles is the finest warrior and is capable of the unbelievable. Lastly, Achilles heroic ability to be compassionate to others even his own advisory is remarkable. This is shown when
