...I. Show us an activity you enjoy doing. Tell us how you think it contributes to your personal and professional development I began training and coaching beach volley last year. The idea came into my mind while I was watching the beach volley tournament of my girlfriend job and many participants were complaining about the different level of the teams. Once back home I explained my idea to my girlfriend which is a volley professional and introduced me to the sport and she bought it. The reason why I have selected this activity is because it contributes to strengthen the relationship with my girlfriend, sharing and enjoying together an important portion of my few spare times, since my job is very time consuming being “up in the air all the time”. I therefore killed two birds with one stone, keeping my girlfriend happy without sacrificing my preferred hobby: playing sport. Beach Volley, as any other sport, is good for both physical and mental health. It makes my little heart muscle big and strong and it helps me get rid of toxins from the body. When I am on the beach playing with the “guys” I feel relaxed and, looking at the immensity of the Mediterranean Sea I am able to forget the daily difficulties and recharge my battery. Furthermore, it helps me on my self-awareness development. During this period when the current crisis is oppressing specific sector like the public research, I feel the need to collaborate in activities that contribute to the improvement of some...

...physical activities. However, does someone’s cultural background affect what sports they enjoy? I interviewed three people of different cultural ethnicities and age groups with questions about why they enjoy the physical activities that they do. Based on my research, I have discovered that a person’s cultural ethnicity does impact which physical activities individuals may enjoy doing. First, I interviewed Shannon, a 14-year-old girl of American/Caucasian ethnicity. She is very athletic and exercises every single day. Shannon enjoys swimming, running, and biking. When asked about why she enjoys these activities, she said “I love any sports that are fast paced, sports that keep me attentive and awake. Any activity that gets me out of breath and tired, but feeling satisfied at the end of the day is what I like the most.” Living in an American family, Shannon believes that her love for sports is influenced by the fact that many members of her family also enjoy physical activity. She says “I’m constantly surrounded by family members and classmates participating in sports, and I want to be a part of it too.” Next, I interviewed Minh, a 48-year old man of Asian ethnicity. He has a job in software engineering, along with a family. Minh enjoys the sport of badminton, which he plays about once a week. He says “As a child in Vietnam, I was always so interested in the badminton games of the other adults. Badminton is a very popular sport in many Asian countries, and it’s something that I grew...

Supporting the Human Spirit is the #4 domain in creating change in activities within long-term care (Gfeller, 2016). The activities older adults participate in should lend a hand to a meaningful life and support the wants and needs of the resident. As I dove deeper into the case studies and compared them to the activity calendar provided, it was clear that certain aspects of resident want and needs were not being provided. Case Evaluation One of the residents I chose to evaluate was a 73-year-old man who used to enjoy watching baseball, Catholic activities, and group activities. Although he has a few vision and mobility issues...

The stores mostly sell Mardi Gra items, because New Orleans is home to the famous Mardi Gra parades. ...Cozumel, Mexico. Both destinations have a variety of activities for me to enjoy while vacationing, but the expenses are quite a bit different. Cozumel will cost more, but I believe I will enjoy the Caribbean cruise more than I will enjoy relaxing in the mountains of Branson. Choosing a vacation getaway can be stressful but exciting. Even on a budget, it is simple to plan an affordable vacation. Two places I would like to vacation at are the mountains of Branson, Missouri and a Caribbean cruise to Cozumel, Mexico. In Branson, there are almost limitless attractions to enjoy. While relaxing in a cozy cabin in the mountains, I could enjoy the peace and quiet nature with beautiful scenery, or I could visit some of the attractions around the area. There is a cabin called the, "Beary Cozy" cabin, and it has one bedroom and one and a half bath. It comes with a fully equipped kitchen and living area making it feel like a home away from home (www.traveloffice.org). The cabin has a romantic fireplace in the living area, perfect for a relaxing, romantic getaway. There are many attractions to choose from, most of which are affordable for someone vacationing on a budget. If I choose Branson as my vacation destination, I would leave on a Sunday and return the following Sunday. I would have to drive almost 7 hours which is 385 miles. It would cost me around $30.00 to get to Branson and $30.00 back home. While vacationing I will visit a few of the close attractions [Last Name]...

...for people of all ages, but is especially so for the elderly since they are likely to retire and have more time to engage in leisure activities. The following is an explanation of participation patterns between three seniors, identifying their roles in leisure now, and in adulthood, in these four categories: education, travel, volunteering, fitness and sport. The first interviewee is an 86 year old male from a nursing home. He and his wife have resided in the home for five years. In adulthood, Lloyd was very active. Although he was raised during the depression, having little money, there were always things to do. Whether that be working on the farm, having a game of ball hockey out on the road, or hunting. Lloyd was always doing something. He enjoyed leisure activities whenever he wasn’t working, which was sometimes hard working seven days a week. Especially the walk, 6 miles one way. But Lloyd always seemed to find time for his lady to take her square dancing, and bowling. Lloyd also enjoyed snowmobiling in the winter, horse shoes in the summer, and every week he attended the local legion to play cards and darts. Lloyd is still driving at 86, but he has many limitations. With old age, he has slowed down and is not as capable of doing the things he once could. He has arthritis and sometimes can barely get out of bed. He does still drive, and enjoys taking his wife out the country roads. He still...

...Stanford OHS will be a wonderful gateway to my future. I look forward to meeting new people, sharing my views, and taking difficult courses that are at my level. I enjoy challenge and diving deep into my interests, especially in science and math. I started school in Portland, OR, in a combined kindergarten and first grade class. The first year was terrific because I could participate in the first grade curriculum. But the second year I repeated the same curriculum, so it bored me, and I skipped the grade. To find a long term solution, our family moved to Los Altos, CA, which offers a more rigorous education. Now, I am inspired by advanced math in school as well as extracurricular activities. I am a good fit for Stanford OHS because I enjoy online learning, sharing my thoughts, and studying new ideas. I participate in extracurricular activities for math and science - including the Euler Circle and the Synopsys Science Championship, where I was...

... ➢ Simply defined, recreation refers to experiences and activities chosen and pursued by the individual in his/her free time; the basis being that the experience sought and activities pursued, in the real sense of the word, 're-creates' the individual so that he/she may be refreshed to enable him/her to resume daily obligations, whatever those may be. John Ap (1986) Recreation trends and implications for government. In R. Castle, D. Lewis & J. Mangan (eds) Work, Leisure and Technology. Melbourne, Longman Cheshire,167-83 ( p. 167). ➢ Recreation consists of an activity or experience, usually chosen voluntarily by the participant, either because of the immediate satisfaction to be derived from it, or because he perceives some personal or social values to be achieved by it. It is carried on in leisure time, and has no work connotations, such as study for promotion in a job. It is usually enjoyable and when it is carried on as part of organized or community services, it is designed to meet constructive and socially worthwhile goals of the individual participant, the group and society at large. Richard Kraus (1966) Recreation Today: Program Planning and Leadership. Englewood Cliffs, NJ, Prentice-Hall, p. 7. Objectives and Importance of Recreation: We all need a break from work; we need to break from our mundane routine and refresh ourselves by indulging in recreational activities. Recreation is meant to serve as a relaxing break from our hectic...

...LEARNING STYLES ACTIVITY We all learn in different ways. The more we understand about our own learning styles and those of our colleagues the better equipped we will be to provide a rich and multi-sensory learning experience for the users of museums, archives and libraries. This self-perception questionnaire is based on Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences. It will help you assess the balance of your learning styles, as you perceive them at this point in time. These preferences are not fixed. Your response will vary according to your mood and the learning context, and you are likely to have 3 or 4 preferences. It is important to remember that the more that we learn to use the full range of intelligences the more effective we become as learners. Please complete the questionnaire following the instructions. On the following pages transfer your scores to the multiple intelligences listing and then total these to find out your preferred learning style. ...Textbook Picture: The Preschool Child The ages between 3 and 6 are often called the preschool years. During this period, a child develops in these main areas: physical development, cognitive development, language development, social development, and motor development. A child grows taller and loses the chubbiness of the toddler period in these years. Gross and fine motor skills become more developed and refined as each year passes as manifested by participation in running, skipping, and drawing pictures. Language develops rapidly, and the child may know thousands of words and is able to construct rather complicated sentences by the end of this period. The major tasks of the preschool child include preparation to enter school, the development of a cooperative-type play, control of body functions, acceptance of separation, and increase in communication skills, memory, and attention span (Leifer, 2003, p. 422). Erikson’s preschool stage involves the development of initiative (Leifer, 2003, p. 436). He believed that a preschool child learns assertiveness and can manipulate the environment. Kohlberg’s theory concerning preschoolers refers to the moral development and the beginning awareness of needs of others (Leifer, 2003, p. 436). He stated that a preschool child believes that rules are absolute, and breaking rules result in punishment.
