“We have to get over this notion, which many of us are taught early, that your soul is in your body. Because if your soul is in your body, it doesn't grow very much–your body is obviously limited in size. But if your soul's not in your body, but your body is in your soul, then your soul can grow as much as your heart and mind grow.” Early in the fall semester in September, I had the honor to hear and see the words of a spiritual director or guide called Adam Bucko. He is a Polish author that wrote the book “Occupy Spirituality”. This book filled with serenity and eagerness to grow further is a book filled with motivation, the same motivation that the presentation brought to me. The film that I saw at Adam Bucko’s presentation was making a point about how it is to be homeless and it showed seven kids from New York, that in the group of the young homeless people that took part in sharing their testimony and also filmed it . In the beginning of the film they present Adam Bucko and his ability to point out teens in New York that are homeless by just their appearance. These runaway teens start off with favors to get what they believe they need by doing some prostitution, selling a drug …which only leads to them becoming homeless adults. In addition Adam Bucko states that majority of the reason teens runaway is because of abuse in the home and sexual abuse. I learned in the video that some teens are in denial about being homeless; they live paycheck to paycheck and don’t know how to move forward in life. They begin a lifestyle of desperation and eagerness to lose so much just to gain so little. Some facts shown on the film is that 44% are working homeless which refers to the amount of teens working paycheck to paycheck, 28% attend college and 37% accuse they have been sexually abuse. The 37% of those sexually abused begin to form a sexual stigma which can cause runaways to lead a life where they live off of sex, 20% of that 37% have traded sex for money. I was intrigued by a young lady her name is Lysette she was sexually abused by a family friend and ended up on the streets rather quickly. She found this invisible program that got her on her feet and now she is doing very well. In addistion to this information the film provided me with information about other reasons why young people end up on the street. Out of all the homeless young people 11% that were incarcerated look for shelter within the two years that they are out. Sadly, 6 in 10 employers don’t accept ex-incarcerated people.Luckily Adam Bucko’s non profit foundation provides a reciprocity shelter where people in that foundation help find not only jobs but careers and also help these young people find themselves. Over all I enjoyed the spiritual director coming and talking at Bergen, but most importantly I enjoyed learning about just how awful some people have it. Sometimes I think I have it rough but remembering this film and recalling just how positive these young people are about moving forward helps me become a more positive person.
