The Indian journalist, Kuldip Nayyar, was also born at Sialkot. Prominent journalists, Khalid Hasan, Hamid Mir, Zahid Malik and Ibn-e-Shamsi were born in Sialkot. Jawed Iqbal, Muhammad Farooq and Mumtaz Hamid Rao are other famous personalities from Sialkot. The Indian politician and twice Prime Minister of India, Gulzari Lal Nanda, also belonged from Sialkot. The orator of Pakistan Syed Faiz-ul Hassan Shah belonged from Sialkot.Maulana Ubaidullah Sindhi was born at Sialkot. Khawaja Muhammad Safdar a former Acting President of Pakistan and Chairman of the Majlis-e-Shoora also hails from Sialkot. Khawaja Muhammad Asif, The former Speaker of the National Assembly, and Acting President, Chaudhry Amir Hussain, the Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Mirza Shahid Saleem Baig Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Punjab also hail from Sialkot.
The Pakistani (Lollywood) actor Waheed Murad, Indian (Bollywood) actors Rajendra Kumar and A. K. Hangal were also born at Sialkot.Ghulam Ali, the Ghazal singer and Ustad Allah Rakha, the famous Sarangi Nawaz, are also from Sialkot. Sialkot is the home city of many players of the Pakistan National Cricket Team. Ijaz Butt, (Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board), Zaheer Abbas, Ijaz Ahmed, Shoaib Malik,Mansoor Amjad, Zahid Fazal, Abdur Rehman, and Jawaid Iqbal (Hong Kong National Cricket player) were all born at Sialkot. The captains and players of the Pakistani National Hockey team including Shahnaz Sheikh, Manzoor Hussain Jr., Nasir Ali, Asif Bajwa, (Secretary of Pakistan Hockey Federation), Tariq Sheikh, Zahid Sheikh, Muhammad Waqas Sharif, Mahmood Hussain, Maqsood Hussain, Munir Bhattiand Kamran Ashraf also hail from this city. Senate Chairman Mr.Farooq Hamid Naek originally belongs to a family from Sialkot and settled in Karachi.

Significance of Sialkot
Important Personalities The great Sufi saint of Sialkot, Imam Ali-ul-Haq , better known as Imam Sahib, lived here during the 13th century AD, during the reign of Feroz Shah Tughlaq (of the Tughlaq Dynasty ). He is reputed to have converted a majority of the local population to Islam . Another renowned scholar of Sialkot was Mullah Abdul Hakim who is known in the Middle East as Fazil Lahori . The Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan , had him weighed in gold once and in silver twice.
Sialkot is the birthplace of the Muslim philosopher, scholar and poet, Dr. Muhammad Iqbal , as well as the famous Urdu poet, Faiz Ahmed Faiz .
The famous Indian journalist, Kuldip Nayyar , is the son of Dr. Gurbakhsh Singh who was from Sialkot and used to practice medicine in the city’s Trunk Bazar. The famous Indian politician and twice Prime Minister of India , Gulzari Lal Nanda , also came from Sialkot .

The business was so successful that the owner offered the rehabilitation of whole of Sialkot if they named the city after him. Such inspirations are the main motivation to the people of Sialkot.

As stated by Mr. Muhammad Shafique Sheikh, “A business man always goes into that line of business in which he sees profit”. This is correct in the case of Sialkot. The choice of business was also because of the profitability and also because they have the necessary background required for it. The knowledge and the entrepreneur spirit is utmost important for them to begin their businesses. The past working and the family relations also are the major contributors towards the selection of their line of business. Diversification is also present in many families in Sialkot. The children change their line of work from the traditional family businesses.
Key to Success as Entrepreneurs
Commitment is the main key to success for them. They believe that when one has given his word for it then it is understood that the party would be fulfilling their end of the bargain. This was also elaborated that this is probably the main reason of success for all Sialkoti business men who are now owning huge businesses. There is a concept of “Likh lein” in Punjabi which is being used in all the businesses in Sialkot. There is no practical writing in this. The mere phrase has its value amongst the Sialkoti’s who when commit state “Likh lia” meaning that they now honor this arrangement and would do whatever it takes to fulfill the vows of the agreement. This is a binding commitment which has to be followed by the parties involved.
Another reason for the success of Sialkoti’s is that they have a natural gift of entrepreneurship. When a child in Sialkot grows up, he borrows money from his parents to setup a small business to make his earnings. The effort put by him is so good that within a period of 5-7 years he owns 5-10 cars of his own and a huge business which is financing him. This is considered to be a gift to the people of Sialkot.
The seniors in Sialkot do not discourage or there is no leg pulling by the seniors to the young generation who wants to stand on their feet. Mr Shafique mentioned two cities which do not allow their siblings to become entrepreneurs as the elders are handling the businesses. The sarcasm in his voice suggested that it was Lahore and Islamabad.
Weaknesses of the Community
The overall reputation of the Sialkotees is good. However the main weakness told by them was told to be that they are very short tempered. The reason behind this was found out to be strict on the commitment programs that they make. They make no exceptions to this. Even if the party is a relative or a friend, they have to follow the rules and regulations. They have ended many relations even with the family members when they don’t tend to honor their agreements. The weakness is in the form of lack of government intervention and the providence of neccassary services that they require. The roads and the infrastructure facalitites are almost absent in the area of Sialkot. The sanitation system in the main populated areas are still absent. The absence of schools and colleges are causing the labour to be still uneducated and unskilled.
This community doesn’t have any influence on the government. They are hard working people and thus setup their own systems which they require for the running of their enterprises such as the airport. Entrepreneurs are not united and this non unity has lead to the creation of such problems.
