1. What is the key for success of international enterprises when coming into China?  List out several objects: vast capital, brand name, etc.  Name out the most crucial element: Localisation 2. What is the definition of Localisation?  Definition 1: (general) The practice of adjusting a product's functional properties and characteristics to accommodate the language, cultural, political and legal differences of a foreign market or country.  Definition 2: (language) They do this by making sure the content of their communications is culturally sensitive and presented in languages that their audiences understand. Language translation, which is a large part of localization, can sometimes be facilitated with automatic language translation. However, much additional work is usually needed.  Definition 3: (general) The process of adapting a product or service to a particular language, culture, and desired local "look-and-feel." Ideally, a product or service is developed so that localization is relatively easy to achieve - for example, by creating technical illustrations for manuals in which the text can easily be changed to another language and allowing some expansion room for this purpose.  Definition 4 (from Reporter): Localisation is the alternation meeting the wisdom the certain society with the aim of tapping into local market. 3. Why is Localisation a prevailing factor when talking about China? (Google and Amway cases integrated in this section) List out several barriers and internal strengths of the Chinese:  The market has just been open in recent years; not clear regulations in several new sectors --> Amway: no regulations for direct selling --> business model distorted by sales representatives for their own shakes --> lightweight boundary between direct selling & pyramid scheme.  Policies and subsidies supported for domestic enterprises. --> Google: beaten by Baidu with support politically from the government.  Enormous market with a large number of population accompanied by strong traditional values. --> values partly opposed to the Western values. --> Amway: family-based value >< nuclear families--> relatives and friends in China seduced by profit promises. 4. From Different Values --> introduce McDonald in China

...HW Solution Chapter 1: Case (One day in the life) This case shows a glimpse of what it is like to be a project manager. It also underscores that being a project manager is more social than technical and that project managers spend the majority of their time interacting with various people who impact a project. 1. How effectively do you think Rachel spent her day? You may argue that she is inefficient and does not have control over her time. You may also argue that this is the nature of the job as expected, and that she is appropriately spending her time managing relations and keeping on top of things that affect the project. Students with little work experience are often much more critical than those with work experience. 2. What does the case tell you about what it is like to be a project manager? Rachel’s day underscores three key functions project managers spend their time performing: a. Building and sustaining interpersonal relations. Project managers have to network and develop good working relations with team members and other project stakeholders. b. Information gathering and dissemination. Project managers are the information hub for their projects. They are in constant communication with various stakeholders, collecting information from various sources, and sending it to those who have a need to know. c. Decision-making. Project managers consult with various people to make decisions necessary to complete the...

Counting Animals

...This week I chose to write and talk about counting animals here in Alaska. How exactly are the populations estimated? How is it possible to count the different species in Alaska? What are the current populations in Alaska? What are the current populations of animals in Alaska? No one knows, exactly. No one knows exactly how many people there are here, either. It's usually easier to count humans, because people can talk to each other and ask and answer questions. Animals aren't that cooperative. The numbers of wild animals in the state are estimated using a variety of methods. Some wildlife populations group together so biologists can determine their numbers using a photo census. Caribou, for example, aggregate in the summer when mosquitoes are thick. When the caribou gather, the groupings are monitored until biologists are convinced that nearly all of the caribou in the herd are included. Assuming the weather cooperates, they fly over the herd in an aircraft fitted with a belly-mounted camera and photograph the entire herd on large-format film. After the film is processed, biologists sit in the office with magnifying glasses and count every caribou on the photos. This process takes several weeks to complete this type of census. Moose don't gather in large groups. Their population estimate surveys are performed in the fall and winter when the right combination of weather, snow depth, and day length allow biologists to fly and see the moose. It's hard to believe that...

Corruption in Russia

...Vlad Shtyrts Mr. Caruso H Mod Literature 1 May 2014 Analysis of corruption in Russia “They steal,” said Nikolai Karamzin, Russian poet, historian, and philosopher, to sum up Russia. His statement is quite accurate, because that is exactly what has been happening in Russia for the past half a millennia. Corruption is one of the main causes of all the problems in Russia. It has spread from the central government into the economy, education, health care, and national defense. Corruption directly impacts the lives of Russian citizens and the relationship with foreign nations. Russia is known to have a long history of corruption, every year it is becoming an increasing problem because it brings an overall instability to the country and affects all of its citizens. The money intended for the social systems is being routed into the pockets of rapacious politicians and criminals. What is corruption? According to the Oxford dictionary corruption is “dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery,” this is exactly what it means, but in Russia it is much more complex. There are many categories, types, and tier of corruption in Russia, each dealing with different aspects of the practice. Two main types exist, the grand and petty corruption. Grand corruption deals with the government branches, and has a greater monetary value. This type involves corruption in politics, lawmaking, and government contracts. Petty corruption is are the insignificant bribes...
