...man’s ultimate joy can only be found in man’s communion or relationship with nature”. “...there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun” ( p. 79). “You think that I am stubborn, but you are even more stubborn than me. You had a wonderful chance on your drive back to see one of the greatest sights on earth, the Grand Canyon, something every American should see at least once in his life” ( Chapter 6, p. 57). “But in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure” (Chapter 6, p. 57). “...they present to Alex a route which apparently will take him to the ocean. He is overjoyed and hope bursts back into his heart” (Chapter 4, p. 34). “Flying would be cheating . It would wreck the whole trip”( Chapter 7, p. 67). “Hey Guys! This is the last communication you shall receive from me. I now walk out to live amongst the wild. Take care, it was great knowing you” (Chapter , p. 69). ‘This is the last time you shall hear from me Wayne….I want you to know that you’re a great man. I now walk into the wild” (p. 69). Analysis Paragraph In the book “ Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer, Nature plays a significant role in the life of Chris McCandless before he leaves this earth. Chris McCandless and William Wordsworth shared similar views. William believed that the natural world was emblem of God or...

...When taking a look at both Don Quixote and I was the Enemy of the People, we are able to find certain similarities and differences. One of the main ones being that the main characters in each of the works are sent on an adventure or journey, willingly or not willingly. In Don Quixote, we are first presented with a wealthy old demented man that has been driven mad over the years. The elderly man then, with inspiration from one of his books, sets off into the world on his broken-down horse in a quest to hopefully find a maiden and to become an official knight. He states his urgency to take off on his adventure in the quote, “These preliminaries settled, he did not care to put off any longer the execution of his design, urged on to it by the thought of all the world was losing by his delay, seeing what wrongs he intended to right, grievances to redress, injustices to repair, abuses to remove, and duties to discharge.” He has changed himself from a static character that stayed at home and read books all day to a new man with a certain cause in mind (even if he is in a fantasy world)....

...A man I admire once told me, “The man who claimed he has never told a lie, just told his first.” For many people around the world, lying is a part of their everyday life. This could be something as insignificant as telling their significant other that they are fine with eating at a certain restaurant. (Even though they don’t like that restaurant at all.) Lying can also be much more serious and hurtful towards others. And as I will show this this essay, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has both types. One example of lying in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn I would like to address is in the beginning of the story. This was when they came upon the house that had fallen into the river during the storm. In this scene Jim went into the building first, and he saw Huck’s father dead in the wreckage. He covers the body and hides who it really is from Huck. Jim lies here, he knew that it was Huck’s dad, but he chose not to tell him for fear of his own self preservation. Although I believe that Jim struggles with telling this lie, because he does come clean about it later in the story. I think that this would be a classified as a grey area for weather...

...Philippine politics Philippine politics now a day are full of corruption, cheating and full of shit. And at this world now elections are controlled by the people who have a lot of money also controlling the election by scaring other people. And that I can say that money is a powerful things in this world. Because of corruption Many rich people in the Philippines lack social responsibility, poor people have been conditioned that they do not have the resources required to help themselves or that change for the better is not possible since these are how things have been done ever since. It has always been this way with many political administrations in the past to the present. Limited development opportunities and options and living daily on a survival mode also breed negative attitudes such as “bahala na”, “kapit sa patalim” (living on the edge), and crab mentality (pulling others down in an effort to go ahead). I do salute and idolize Mr Marcos because of his ability to change the. Should I say world? Or people? Because of his era I can see that the people is full of respect on their own way. Yes., there’s always a corruption in terms of politics but now there’s a big difference mga gahaman at nasisilaw ang mga tao sa pera. Politics in the Philippines or in other country is a powerful because they have the power of all. They are authorized person they can do what they want yes they’re the one who create the batas. ...Running Head: ETHICS IN AN ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT Ethics in an Academic Environment Americans want to be more, have more, do more, and know more. America is a choleric, driven culture and that is one of the very reasons that make it such a distinguished nation. Americans in their desire for more may have compromise their ethics. Are people willing to get ahead at any cost? Most people in American society live busy, hectic lives and this affects all facets of life. In the academic environment, students face grave pressure from others as well as internally to perform well (McCabe 2001). Plagiarism is one aspect of ethics in academia where students may find themselves compromising. In a study by Bill Bowers of “over 5,000 students on 99 different campuses, 75% of the respondents had engaged in one or more incidents of academic dishonesty (McCabe, 2001, pg. 220). Although this study is a frightening and awakening find, as Carter, Bishop, and Kravits (2007) stated, “Plagiarism usually starts accidentally during research” (Chap. 8, wk.2). Time restraints, improper planning or just misinformation can all lead to plagiarism. Whether intentional or unintentional, plagiarism is still unethical and illegal. In America’s demanding and competitive society, ethics may have taken a back seat all in the name of progress. Technology has allowed people to enjoy a more advanced, more efficient quality of life, though...

...Chris McCandless: Hero or fool? “If this adventure proves fatal and you don’t ever hear from me again, I want you to know you’re a great man. I now walk into the wild.” (Krakauer, 3). Into the wild is about a man by the name of Chris McCandless. Chris goes into Alaska to try to survive but ends up dying in Alaska on the Stampede Trail. Chris McCandless is a fool throughout the book, for example, Chris tries to survive in the Alaskan Wilderness with little experience, he tries to survive by himself with no help and Chris is to hard on his parents. Chris demonstrates foolishness by trying to survive in the Alaskan wilderness with little experienve. He shows this in Chapter...

...Massive open online courses (MOOC's) are going to destroy traditional educational institutions. Depending where you stand on this subject you might agree or disagree with this statement. After reading articles by Karen Head and Thomas Friedman I have changed my point of view various times. My thoughts on the variety of problems that arise out of MOOCs are many and will be covered throughout this paper. My proposal is MOOCs need a lot of work and years of research before they can be relevant in today’s society. MOOC is a great new idea. While it has not been smooth sailing I(Head) still see this as an important adventure (Head). I (Friedman) can see a day soon where you’ll create your own college degree by taking the best online courses from the best professors from around the world (Friedman). These authors both agree on the possibilities of MOOCs being a good idea. I do believe that Friedman is a little more enthusiastic about the whole process and its potential. Large courses do not work. Unlike Friedman, Head has actual experience setting up and dealing with running MOOCs. I noticed a lot of negativity from Head-She makes comments about the issues that arose during her MOOC. Among those issues were security, time and amount of work put in to it. While these are valid points, I am an instructor in the Navy, and even a simple 3 week class takes a lot of work to set up and deliver. I am actually surprised Head did not claim to put more work into her MOOC which is possibly...

...The name of the book is the quest for the diamond sword. It’s a Minecraft related book. The author is Winter Morgan, published by Sky Pony Press. The time is modern, because the book is in a world of Minecraft. I chose this book because it was the first fiction book I found on my shelf. That, and I like Minecraft. The theme of the book would be adventure, because the main characters, Steve, Max, Henry and Lucy, leaves home to search for diamonds to make a diamond sword. The problem is that monsters are everywhere. They usually fought them, but sometimes they had to run from the fight because someone was badly injured. This story is told through third person because when ever someone talks it's in quotation marks, no matter who is talking, it will be in quotation marks. And it describes what position they are in....

...discovered that his father was cheating on his mother, and increasing secrets were formed around this one big lie. This hurt Chris because his parents kept him sheltered, they wanted it to seem like everything was okay but it wasn’t. Krakauer implements this important part because it showed that Chris was led to false truths yet he just wanted to be told the truth. As Krakauer states the facts in Chris’ life, he shows and relates to Chris, “Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth” (12). Krakauer shows Chris’ issues with his family by using this quote by Henry David Thoreau that expressed the isolation of Chris, Krakauer, and Thoreau. This helps the readers better understand Krakauer’s intentions to distinguish Chris’ thoughts by not just including Chris’ and his family's thoughts but describing Chris’ feelings in another author’s words. Krakauer had made a guideline through the book of which places Chris had stopped and traveled until his final destination of Alaska. He had initially left home with very little and waited to see which direction the earth might take him. He traveled around the U.S. in search to find life’s fulfillment. Chris tells, “The very basic… and different sun (6). This quote is from a letter he writes to a friend made on the way named Ron Franz. As the novel continues, Chris had stopped and started again meeting many different people but then leaving them again for the same mindset of the fulfillment of adventure. He felt this as a freedom...

...I am positively in love with books. I love the feeling that they were written for me, that my ideas about them matter, and the feeling that I am having a conversation with the author. One of my favorite books (by my favorite contemporary novelist) is Looking for Alaska by John Green it sparks those feelings every time I open it. The ambiguous nature of it allows me to discover something new all the time, like I am uncovering a new layer of a dear friend with the turn of a page. The novel is told from the perspective of Miles Halter (known in the story as Pudge) as he starts attending an out-of-state boarding school in search of a great, life-defining adventure. He finds his adventure in Alaska Young, a headstrong, impulsive, messed-up girl that is best friends...

...The publication of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn resulted in generally friendly reviews, but the novel was controversial from the outset.[13] Upon issue of the American edition in 1885 a number of libraries banned it from their stacks.[14] The early criticism focused on what was perceived as the book's crudeness. One incident was recounted in the newspaper, the Boston Transcript: The Concord (Mass.) Public Library committee has decided to exclude Mark Twain's latest book from the library. One member of the committee says that, while he does not wish to call it immoral, he thinks it contains but little humor, and that of a very coarse type. He regards it as the veriest trash. The library and the other members of the committee entertain similar views, characterizing it as rough, coarse, and inelegant, dealing with a series of experiences not elevating, the whole book being more suited to the slums than to intelligent, respectable people.[14] Twain later remarked to his editor, "Apparently, the Concord library has condemned Huck as 'trash and only suitable for the slums.' This will sell us another five thousand copies for sure!" Soon after, in 1905, New York’s Brooklyn Public Library also banned the book due to bad word choice and Huck having “not only itched but scratched” within the novel, which was considered obscene.[15] When asked by a Brooklyn librarian about the situation, Twain replied: I am greatly troubled by what you say. I wrote 'Tom Sawyer' & 'Huck Finn' for adults...

...The American Way of LifeWhat if someone you respect walked up to you and said, You know I really dont think America will last if we all continue our current way of life? The fact that the government created a slogan for their current war, The War Against Terror, as though it were the newest line-up of clothes, goes to show that in America, money talks. Many Americans beg to be a world power, a financial king, and a war tyrant as well. The innocent lives lost and destroyed never touch our comfortable luxurious living rooms. For many people, myself included, this seems like the worst possible problem. Trying to change the core values of an entire nation is an enormous task; a task that for some individuals, may seem rather impossible. If you are innocent then why did you run and hide? Arundhati Roy uses this type of questioning when considering the U.S. government in Come September. One suspicious tactic is the widely used label of anti-American. American establishments have tried to single out critics and protesters referring to them as anti-American. This mixed with the constant reminder of the September 11 attack dubbed 9/11 gives citizens the feeling that if you are not a war zealot then you might as well be a terrorist. I myself have felt as though if I do not strongly support the governments actions then I am betraying my county and my fellow man. As Arundhati Roy states,An anti-national is a person who is against her own nation and, by inference, is pro some...

These quotes represent Gatsby’s American Dream to have Daisy as his lover. In the end of the novel, the author relates the color green to adventure and exploration and again mentions the green light. “I thought of Gatsby’s wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock. He had come a long way to his blue lawn and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him…” (pg. 189). Just like Gatsby’s failure in his dream, people in the 1920s strived towards success in materialistic things, like money, but the truth is that not everyone became...
