...2014 The year 2014 changed my life forever. My family was like any average family, loud and disorganized, but we always got along and loved each other unconditionally. We shared many laughs and good times. I will never forget the last time my cousins, my Uncle Joe, and I were together. We were blasting the song “Who Let the Dogs Out?” and singing as loud as we could. Uncle Joe was like a second father to me. He spent every weekend with us and we loved every minute of it. He never made a big deal about anything, especially himself. I remember one Sunday in the winter of 2014 when the internet went down at my house. I had to finish my homework at his house; little did I know that was the last time I would ever see my Uncle Joe alive. I arrived home late one night and found my parents distraught on the sofa. Uncle Joe was found in his...

...“Adversity introduces a man to himself.” – Albert Einstein. When I was nine years old I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. I had trouble eating and maintaining weight. I was in pain for most of the day and felt like there would never be an end to the suffering I felt. Sometimes I felt like giving up, I felt like nothing would ease the pain and that my entire life would be like this. That was until a doctor diagnosed me and prescribed nutritional medication to help with my symptoms. Looking back, I can see how adversity has affected my life and how I have become stronger by its presence. My battle with adversity was arduous, yet now I can guide those with similar problems. At first I was the carrot when faced with boiling...

...Humans have a natural affinity towards overcoming challenges and difficult adversity. Throughout life, we adapt to challenges and master the ability to surmount obstacles. Despite the difficulties we experience, the process of overcoming complications allows us to become more knowledgeable on the task at hand. However, it is not just the conquering of adversity that is beneficial, but the adversity itself has positive effects on the challenged. Adversity allows an individual to develop a sense of discipline, as well as encouraging individuals to exercise their mind to confront a problem or conflict. Specifically, students who encounter hardships are more inclined to try harder, which promotes competition within the school. Although adversity may be beneficial towards some students, challenges can be detrimental for students who lack confidence. For instance, some students develop a mentality of despair; they believe that if one has to work hard, then the person does not have the natural ability for the assignment. Based on the effects of adversity aforementioned, I believe that students can both benefit from the obstacles faced in school with the proper mentality or the effects could be hindering. Students face adversity every day, regardless of how transparent the obstacle may be; some problems may not be as evident as others. According to Carol S. Dweck, author of Brainology, all students face adversities throughout their high-school career, specifically, the challenge of overcoming...

Who has a contingency plan for living life from a wheelchair? for me, becoming paralyzed is, without question, the worst thing that has ever happened. at the same time, the experience has allowed me to come back, not just changed but stronger. i’ve learned that our innate ability to survive and adapt is greater than we imagine. resilience is one of the key qualities desired in business leaders today, but many people confuse it with toughness...

...Adversity Essay Carla G. Guzman Penn State University OLEAD 409 Leadership Development Adversity Essay Successful business leaders — or people in general — don’t give up when adversity strikes. They find the ways and means to carry on. Sometimes, it takes a trip to hell and back to really open your eyes. And sometimes, really opening your eyes can change your whole life. (Pirouz, 2015). This essay will focus to explain how past life experiences shape leaders’ character and skills in order to leverage on adversity. Only leaders that take risks and make mistakes have the experience acumen to face hardship, overcome it or learn from it. According to Bennis, “Experiences aren’t truly yours until you think about them, analyze them, examine them, question them, reflect on them, and finally understand them. The point, once again, is to use your experiences rather than being used by them, to be the designer, not the design, so the experiences empower rather than imprison. (Bennis, 2009) His fundamental tenet is that leaders are made, not born. The worst problem they can face, says Bennis, is “early success. There's no opportunity to learn from adversity and problems”. (Bennis, 2008) As humans, we define our strengths and weakness in terms of experiences. We describe ourselves by how able we are handling certain situations or learning from them. Only exploring in depth these situations and dissecting the outcome, we will be able to understand our behavior and attitudes toward...

...Adversity with Dyslexia Did you know that 70-80% of people with poor reading skills are likely to be dyslexic? One in five students have a language based learning disability and the most common one is Dyslexia. I am one of those Dyslexic people. To deal with Dyslexia, I had to use some life skills to cope and overcome the adversity. It was hard work, but it paid off because eventually. I felt very proud of myself as my reading improved. Insight and initiative were two key skills that helped me. I found out that I had Dyslexia at age 8 after having some testing done with a psychologist. She explained that Dyslexia was not my fault because it can be caused by the genes you are born with. She told me there was not a cure to make me better but some...

...The whistle blew, and my team and I jogged off the field, feeling awful. Through the struggle of losing the championship, I realized that I identified two advanced life skills to overcome the adversity: values and insight. The causes of going through the adversity of losing the championship soccer game, were the team that we played was pretty good, and had some exceptional players. The skills they used were sophisticated, although my team still knew how to use those skills. The other cause for going through the adversity, was that my team was tired from the first game that we had played earlier that same day. We were all slower in this game than we were in the first game. The effects of the adversity were that some of us cried after the...

...Adversity is a difficult thing to face, but it shows us who we are. Some people say that there are three ways to react to adversity, carrot who softens to when boiled, eggs that harden, and the coffee bean that changes the water. This is a question we have to ask ourselves. I react differently to every adversity, as a carrot, egg, and coffee bean. Sometimes, when I face adversity I become soft like carrot. This is the worst way to respond. Being a carrot is awful; I feel powerless to do anything. This was the way I dealt with adversity when I was a child. I would cry and ask my parents to correct the problem, never taking responsibility. However, I like to believe that I will overcome this way in time as I grow older, and realise that...

...Staying Positive When I began to do research for this paper my first thought was, what exactly is resilience? Resilience is adapting to adversity. It is the ability to roll with the punches that come in life. When stress, adversity, or trauma attacks, a person will still experience anger, grief, and pain, but they are able to keep functioning. Everyone needs to be a little more resilient in life, having a more positive outlook on trials that frequently come each individual’s way. “The Blessings of Adversity” is a talk given by James E. Faust in February of 1998. Faust, at the time, was the second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The main audiences of this talk are members of The Church through out the entire world. In fact he directly mentions the followers through out his entire talk. Faust specifically talks about financial hardships that cause stress in many people’s lives. He states, “Many Saints throughout the world have a difficult time making ends meet” then making it apparent that many individuals who go through low times in their life rise to be very successful, but humble people. This was a significant time for this talk to be given because around 2002 to 2003 there was an economic recession that affected the United States. I personally feel like this talk was preparing many members...

...The term ‘adversity’ has a generally negative connotation, but when managed correctly, the outcome can be quite positive. Instilling this in the minds of adolescents can be crucial in shaping the character of school age children. Adversity triggers one’s natural fight or flight response, and regardless of the action taken, the result lies in hindsight. When this word, adversity, comes to mind, I am prompted to reflect upon my academic experience as I entered high school. Prior to this transition, school was a very low priority in my mind. In middle school, I was able to glide through the coursework, but I was forced out of this trance that I had become accustomed to. Grades and grade point average (GPA) dropped to levels I had never witnessed. Suddenly, the cloud of privilege I was once blanketed by drifted out of sight and I had to face the reality that if I didn’t become more engaged in my learning, I would be destined for a mediocre future....

...Dealing with adversity is something that everyone has to deal with. When considering how I deal with adversity, I was presented with the question “Am I a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?” As I was drafting my paper I struggled with how to begin, because I wasn't sure what I am. Then I decided I am equal parts carrot, egg, and coffee bean. I am a carrot for many reasons. A carrot becomes soft after experiencing boiling water; as I experience challenges I become sensitive. When dealing with adversity, I feel that becoming a carrot is my first instinct. For example, I turn into a carrot when dealing with school. Classes are very stressful and I can feel myself struggling to deal with the challenges. Due to stress, I don’t always perform to...
