Adversity: Unhealthy Decisions

In 1977 we migrated from urban East Cleveland, Ohio to rural Toomsuba, Mississippi, rural abject poverty at the age of 15 3/4. I personally know, the first leadership any child experiences are their parents. Sometimes, adversity in life will causes some parents to capitulate, for the reason they may not possess the intelligence and/or humility needed, to overcome a specific hardship(s). For me, it was a long-term crumpling marriage and the death of a sibling; that caused my parents to make a series of unhealthy decisions, unbeknownst to them, how their decisions would affect their other children. God’s good grace and mercy saved me by placing specific persons in my path.

Mattie Lee Whittington, was the first manager, co-owner of Red Hot Truck Stop, she observed something in me, that I concealed because of the relocation “intelligence”. Nonetheless, she would always tell me “Darlene, you are too smart to do this! Go back to school and make something of yourself”. Additionally, Francis McAlpine, Head Cook/Supervisor at News Restaurant. Frank, would tell me “get to the junior college and take something,”. Eventually took Frank’s advice, while in attendance at East Mississippi Community College, received a full scholarship to become a Cosmetology Instructor Trainee. Upon completion, Frank told me “now move away from here”. As a consequence, in 1994 transferred my own family from a rural setting to urban setting, to provide them a vicinity full of opportunities. In Atlanta, as a Salon Manager- when it came time to pay my bonus owner’s James and Clara Harvey of Clara’s Hair Designer’s decided they were not going to pay. It just so, happened to coincide with the day my family arrived. The owners were really vial people, but that taught me the importance of ethical leadership and business practices. I am not saying, all encountered were ethical, morally driven persons, as they were not. Although, Ron Arlotta, former Executive Director of The Little Blue House- a Salvation Army program was. Ron, taught me what leadership should be. Ron’s style of leadership was a combination of transactional, participative, charismatic and sometime laissez-faire (but not often) he genuinely cared about other people.
