Do Not Become a Statistic
The Candies Foundation advertisement is one of many who use pathos, logos, and ethos to get their point across. In this ad, a simple color scheme is used in order to grab your attention yet not distract from the seriousness and the simplicity of the message. The hot pink highlights the main points of the ad yet does not drown out the picture. Immediately, the reader’s eyes will be drawn to the picture of the young mother with a sullen expression and her baby. Then their eyes will revert to the number 750,000 highlighted in hot pink. This technique entices the reader to continue reading what the ad is all about. Evidently, The Candies Foundation is targeting young teenage girls due to the young girl pictured and the statistics naming teenage girls specifically. The advertisement intent is to make teenagers think twice before having unprotected sex by showing the consequences that may happen.
The use of pathos in the advertisement is the strongest appeal the Candies Foundation made. As mentioned earlier, the reader’s eyes are drawn to the young girl with the sullen expression. This provokes a sense of dread, or even fear but, the reader is hooked to read more. As the eyes drift to her quote:“ I never thought I would be a statistic”, the reader is hit with another reinforcement of the dread, fear, and possibly loneliness. Colors also play a big part in the pathos appeal. The black and white plays on the seriousness of teenage pregnancies, but the hot pink are to highlight and provoke a sense of hope and solution.
Logos is another appeal the organization uses for their advertisement. It is a simple statistic that jumps out of page. “More than 750,000 teenagers will become pregnant this year.” This statement is startling yet adds a dimension of truth to the advertisement.

For example, a 1952 Maybelline makeup advertisement and a 2009 Max Factor makeup advertisement both used specific elements in ways designed to reach their audiences. The 1952 advertisement and the 2009 advertisement attempted to reach differing audiences through the use of text, positioning, and models. The 1952 advertisement contains a small text, a before and after picture of a female model, and a large headline. The small text shows that people, in this case women, liked to find out for themselves what was being advertised through reading. The before and after picture of the female model the advertisement has is much bigger than the text. This lets us know that people might have liked to be informed through pictures as well, meaning they liked to see the differences the products being advertised made. The 2009 advertisement displays a slightly larger text than the one of 1952, a picture of female model wearing the makeup being advertised, and a large headline too.
