Today, as we live in a technology, business and consumerism world, advertising surrounds us everywhere wherever you go. You just can’t hide from it whatever you do – it will find you, trough television, internet, newspapers, magazines, outside and inside, on packages and so on. If one seize to exist, another, more modern and successful will reappear that will have more chances to reach you. In reality, people tend to hide from most advertisements and in most cases find it irritating, but it still exists and thrives more than ever. Why is it so? Why does advertisements doesn’t care and persists of putting the ideas in our sub consciousness that we need a new, better life with a bigger television, hair shining shampoo and the newest model of Lexus? In general, where did advertising came from and why?
The word advertising comes from Latin language with its original meaning being "to turn toward.“ Sociologists and psychologists believe that advertising is a cultural thing. It is believed that first advertisements were created in Egypt 2 thousand years before BC. Then advertising was only notes on clay, wooden or metal tablets which offered information about what profession was of the shop keeper or what goods did he sell. Others believe that this still wasn‘t advertising, and that true advertising began when separate job roles and trade of goods were established. It was stated, that the value of advertising grew the most when in trades middlemen started to take action. They were searching for how to present goods in a more fascinating way. So, nowadays as the business sector grew to everyday norm, advertising grew with it together accordingly.
As the advertising is so wide and multiplatform, in my opinion, it can be friendly and harmful which depends on the use of it. Clients in the wide range of products often feels lost on the decision that to choose. It’s hard to choose whose company name to trust, so advertisements informs buyers about the products of companies, what is the nature of them and for what reason were they created so that accordingly to your demands you can choose more easily.
But in reality it is often that the viewers are just being manipulated and lied to. As advertising creators progressed along with it, they learned of how advertising can actually make you buy. Consumers are influenced by sounds, picture, color and other mean used to act, to buy. Advertising specialists with the help of these factors ties the products with wonderful feelings, experiences. A woman buying lipstick is actually buying hope that this will help her crave attention, meet someone, fall in love and so on. Coca Cola sells us not just a drink but an illusion that this drink will help us transform our ordinary day to a happy day. In videos we only see beautiful, happy, healthy people. Advertising dictates to us what we should want and who to become. It makes us to desire. The model to work to buy to work to buy is established with that as it is beneficial to large companies and governments. For companies that wish to be successful advertising is a great tool for achieving that. Billions pass every year in advertising sector and investments pays off even more.
Advertising is especially effective for kids. Children are weak not only psychically but also psychologically. They are people who are yet to learn about communication principles so they are easy bait for manipulation. One of these manipulations is used in creating products with kid’s favorite hero faces. For example after Harry Potter movies emerged soaps, shampoos, toys, pens, backpacks, t-shirts, bedding and other everyday products with Harry Potter on them. Research was made, after which it became clear how effective is advertising for kids – in kindergarten children were asked to create a list of what they want for Christmas, and most of their desires came from what is currently being shown on TV. In Great Britain people organized an incentive group called “Leave our kids alone”, which demands advertising industry to stop targeting kids younger than 11 years old. Of course most countries have advertising law which forbids many things including targeting children, but it can’t forbid everything and companies still use it in a lot of cases.
But, as I mentioned, advertising is a wide social occurrence, so it isn’t only bad and harmful. Advertisements can make the viewer to double think about certain event. For instance, social advertisements are originally created to generate attention of society to such things as alcoholism, smoking, global warming or help for the poor.
In conclusion I would like to say that advertising can be a friend and can be foe, which mostly depends on the situation and the case in which it is used. The effect of it to humans depends of their own perception of the world, values, demands and priorities. Consumers should be more aware of how they are influenced by advertising and be conscious when they buy something. People should understand that things don’t bring happiness and a brand new car is still only an aid to get from location A to location B.

...that miraculously recover by the next scene or even in the middle of the scene. It seems that Timmy Turner and his Fairy God Parents hold the power in the show. In order for Timmy to make wishes he needs his Fairies. They are to grant him every wish that he wishes for, with some rules of course. Instead of ending with violence Timmy finds a way to reverse his wishes. In this episode his mother was hit with an arrow and fell in love with Mr. Crocker who is Timmy’s teacher and foe. Timmy lives with his mother and father. They are married and their relationship with Timmy is portrayed negatively. There has been an episode or two that shows his parents grounding him, other than that adult guidance is absent. It is very easy for Timmy to trick his parents. He can do that with or without his fairies. They don’t seem to really care what Timmy does. His parents are rarely home. They leave him with a terrible baby sitter named Vicky while they go out. Most main characters are males (Timmy, His Dad, his 2 Friends, his Teacher, his Fairy, his enemies). Some males and females are stereotyped into “buff’ or “hot” characters. However there is a variety of looks, characteristics, and personality traits in the males and females in this show. The jobs are not stereotypical; men and women constantly switch roles in Fairly Odd parents. Most of the characters are Caucasian. There are...

...Leadership Styles of Carly Fiorina and Steve Jobs Running head: LEADERSHIP STYLES OF CARLY FIORINA AND STEVE JOBS 1 Leadership Styles of Carly Fiorina and Steve Jobs Group 1 Management 4314 MGT4314 Submitted to Dr. Stephanie Solansky Leadership Styles of Carly Fiorina and Steve Jobs Leadership Styles of Carly Fiorina and Steve Jobs Carly Fiorina took a leadership position as CEO of Hewlett-Packard for about 6 years. She brought to Hewlett-Packard (HP) nearly twenty years of experience and expertise in marketing and sales that she acquired with AT&T and Lucent. However, she failed to execute HP's strategy and deliver improvements in the company's profits and stock price. She was asked by Hewlett-Packard's board of directors to resign due to the lack of the leadership skills needed to take advantage of emerging market opportunities (Hewlett-Packard, 2007). Fiorina's mistakes in leading HP are an illustration that leadership effectiveness is dependent on situation and other environmental influences, 2 and not only the traits of the leader. In contrast to Fiorina’s leadership failure, a success story unfolded at Apple Computers where a leader practically saved the company. Management guru Jim Collins calls him the "Beethoven of business," Wall Street loves him, and even Bill Gates became more of a partner to him after once being his nemesis. This powerful man is Steve Jobs, cofounder and current chief executive officer of Apple Computer. Much has been made of Jobs'...

Multi Level Marketing

...What is Multi Level Marketing (MLM)? Multi-level marketing, also known as network marketing, is a form of direct sales in which individuals, known as distributors, sell products, usually over the telephone or go door to door. Distributors recruit other distributors who do the same. Each distributor makes money on the products that their recruits sell in addition to the money they make from their own sales. The idea is that eventually the original distributor can just sit back and let the distributors he recruited make money for him. For a fee, usually between $25 and $100, these MLM companies will sell people a distributor kit that includes informational brochures about the product they will be selling, price lists, order forms and an instructional manual. Basics of MLM When it started in the 1930s, MLM was a legitimate business practice that afforded a way for small businesses to get their products to consumers in rural areas that had no access to these products. The idea was much like that of the traveling salesman. At the time, the products sold themselves and the percentage that went to the owner(s) was regarded as an award to those who built the organization. The focus remained on the product. MLM today Today, with the advent of technology giving us the ability to travel far distances, there is no need for these "distribution systems." Therefore, the focus has shifted from the product to recruiting new people to buy into the program or to sell low-quality products...

Google Case Analysis

...Google Misses the Mark There were many areas where Google may have missed the mark in the initial layout and design after its acquisition of You Tube. The first major mark Google missed was the initial design of the video service. Google initially designed the service where users were able to search video content. Google wanted to make an easy search function so that its users could easily search television shows and also find when and where to watch them. The search function was in no way comparable to You Tube. You Tube’s design was more simplistic and searching was much easier. Google’s video service overall missed the mark in the small details as well. The Google video service did not incorporate the small details that users liked such as the number of views. This information was only available to the uploader and not the viewer. Google’s service allowed the user to search captions from a video, but the search would produce only related information such as broadcasting dates and not the actual video. Once Google began allowing user contributed content, it required special version of Video LAN to view the videos, making it inaccessbile to the average viewer. Google also offered a new flash technology which made it a lot quicker to upload a video, but viewing the video took considerably longer. Youtube was a smaller company and there was no real threat or fear of lawsuits for copyright infringement. With Google, their pockets seemed endless and were a prime target for...
