Social Media is defined as primarily Internet and mobile-based tools used for sharing and discussing information among human beings. The term most often refers to activities that integrate technology, telecommunications and social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audio. This interaction, and the manner in which information is presented, depends on the varied perspectives and "building" of shared meaning among communities, as people share their stories and experiences. Businesses also refer to social media as user-generated content or consumer-generated media. The best way to talk about these different types of social media’s are to show the main examples, they come in all forms and types, there are six major ones in the field of communicating with social media and these are: Blogs, Internet Forums, Micro-Blogging, Social Networking, Social Network Aggregation, and Events. Each one of these has a specific purpose and can all be used in the field of advertising. Advertising is changing with the technology and this social media is the next step in the advertising world. Social media’s allow advertisers to reach a huge number of people and target the exact audience they are aimed at with this new type of technology, advertising is becoming a science and different types of social media are becoming the necessary tools to make it work. Kids are now growing up with insane amounts of technology all around them, most households have at least one computer or television in it and these forms of technology are becoming necessary to our everyday lives. The first type of social media that I will talk about is blogs. A blogs is a website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. This allows the individual to become an advertiser right from the comfort of his/her own home. Blogs are ways to voice your opinion about any topic and allow people from all over the world to comment back with their own feelings. People are now able to communicate all over the world with each other through videos and text and the thing that makes a blog so powerful is that, if enabled to, they can be viewed by anyone in the world. Blogs work great in connection with your website. Your website is more on the business level, where your blog is more on a personal level. You can give thoughts on your current promotions or products, or comment on how you business is doing. Many people add what they are currently learning about, making their blog seem like a journey. Another fact about a blog that makes it so interesting to people and advertisers is that is it free, and don’t be fooled and think that nobody is apart of blogging because it is one of the most popular internet activities out there now. The next type of social media that I will talk about is internet forums. These are also known as message boards or an online discussion site, these are absolutely wonderful for bringing people together from anywhere in the world that may have similar interests or want to debate a certain topic. Once these people find a forum they like they can talk about it as often as they like, this would be great for marketing and advertising because it finds your target audience for you and a lot of the hard work is done. For example is there is a internet forum for people who love dogs don’t you think this would be a wonderful time for Pedigree to do some advertising and get involved with the forum and let the people know how much they love dogs and what they are doing to help dogs. Another form of social media is micro-Blogging this is a form of multimedia blogging that allows users to send brief text updates or audio clips and publish them, either to be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group which can be chosen by the user. These messages can be submitted by a variety of means, including text messaging, instant messaging, email, digital audio or the web. The big example of micro-blogging is twitter, twitter is a great way for people to stay connected and just write a quick message to let everyone who they are friends with know what they will be doing at a certain time. Twitter is once again a great way for friends or collogues to stay in touch and just keep you up to speed with what everyone is doing at a certain time. Due to the fact that so many people are involved with Twitter you can start to see advertising all over the screen, this is very popular with other forms of social networking such as Facebook. You can see Ads on the side of the screen I personally don’t think people respond to these that well but it is a form of advertising and helps pay for the website Twitter which is free to sign up for. Another type of social media that I am going to discuss is probably the most important and that is social networking. The most popular example of this is Facebook, this is used by over 175 million people and allows people to send each other messages and stay connected with people through pictures that you might not see as often as you would like. According to some journals I read online Facebook advertising has now allowed you to reach a specific audience that usually would have taken a long time. In order to become a member of Facebook you must fill out your age, sex, what network your apart of and where you live and now with these facts set into the website people who are trying to get ad’s put on the website can now decide exactly who they the ads to be viewed by. For example if you want college students who go to school in Maryland, just a few clicks and your clickable ad will be viewed by all students in that area. Never before has advertising been able to be so accurate and viewed by so many people but the effectiveness of these ads are another story. Many people feel like it is a waste of money because people do not spend the time to look at them, I personally do not bother with the ads but I do know of people who if they do see something they find interesting they will click on it. Millennialls or generation Y’ers are the people who have grown up and been around this type of technology for most if not all of their life. These people don’t know what it is like to not have this amazing technology and it is clearly a part of our everyday lives it is important for people to understand that social media and networks is the future of advertising. It is important to keep up with the new technology or else your company could lose potential customers or even fail.
