Struggle For Education Education is something that’s highly sought after by many. If someone receives an education, endless opportunities are opened up to them. Thankfully, in America, education is readily available to most. Potential students in other countries aren’t so lucky. In America, people struggled for years to get an education, and in some places that struggle is still ongoing. One of the struggles for education in America was that of the African-Americans. Back when America was young, African-Americans were held as slaves. Thanks to a set of laws called “The Slave Codes”, it was illegal to teach slaves how to read or write. The white people’s reasoning behind these laws was that once their slaves were able to read or write, they would quickly become unhappy with their condition and become “unmanageable”. Women were never not allowed to go to school, they just received less education in than boys did. While boys could receive higher education, young girls in colonial America learned to read and write at dame schools and could only attend master schools (better schools) when the boys who went there were too busy working. The ability of girls to attend schools was further inebriated by the stereotypes surrounding them. Back then, it was expected that girls became housewives. This all changed when a higher percentage of girls began attending schools in the late 19th century. The rise of women’s colleges and the acceptance of women going to regular colleges also helped change women’s education. According to the Women’s International Center, in 1870 only 1/5 of all college/university students were female. By 1900, the number increased to 1/3. Since then, the numbers have kept on increasing.
