African Americans and country music
In the text, Sample references Melton McLaurin and Richard Peterson for the discussion of racial struggles in country music. The reference says that “…there is no candid discussion in the music of the many poignant situations that pivot on questions of race in America” (McLaurin and Peterson 107). Even so, Sample acknowledges that while there this lack of discussion, “important exceptions exist” (Sample 107). A less known example of this is “Cherokee Highway” by Western Flyer. The video, as well as the lyrics, tell the story of a black boy whose father was killed by a Klansmen. He befriends a white boy who thinks of him as no less than a brother. The story within the song was representative of those times,
