In the article African American and Hispanics’ Work Characteristics and Preschool Children’s Cognitive Development by Claire E. Baker, her purpose is to show the correlation between fathers of minority groups work characteristics and their children’s cognitive development in their preschool years. Baker recognizes that the relationship between mothers’ work environment and children’s cognitive development has been extensively researched, but the influence of fathers’ work characteristics has not. Since mothers’ work characteristics influence on their children has been studied quite a few times, it is known that mother’s work characteristics are directly related to the development of their children. So since, this is known, the influence of father’s work characteristics on their children needs to be …show more content…
The data from the fathers contained many factors including how many hours their work week consisted of, how satisfied they were with their jobs, in which they rated it on a scale from 1 to 4, with 4 being very satisfied, and descriptions of their shifts, meaning if they worked normal 9 am to 5 pm shifts, or something odd like irregular night shifts.
Along with the information gathered from the fathers, data pertaining to their preschool children’s reading and math skills were also collected. Data from this research showed that children with higher reading scores had fathers who worked more hours per week and worked more irregular shifts. The findings for children’s math scores were similar, the children with higher math scores were also the ones with fathers who worked more hours weekly. On the other hand, fathers who were not as satisfied with their jobs had children with higher math scores. In conclusion, similar to mothers, African American and Hispanic fathers’ work characteristics has been proven to have an influence on their child’s cognitive
