Afternoon Hours

Studies have shown the after school hours from three o’clock to six o’clock to be the time that teenagers partake in experimentation with drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and sex. In a controlled adult supervised environment like an after school program, teenagers are most likely to succeed in school and destroy the risk of getting influenced by bad things National support is needed to create these great after school work environments not only to help the at-risk teenagers, but also children who need academic improvement or some other sort of extracurricular activities. After school programs can help students improve their social skills, self-confidence, school attitude, and academic achievement (“Afterschool”). An after school program can be anything from a sport to a place where they can meet with other people to get work done or simply have fun. It simply needs to be something that occupies their afternoon in a positive manner.
The problem is that many children in the United States are left to themselves since there are few programs available to them. Certain areas of the country, especially cities with high crime rates such as New York, Detroit, Los Angeles, St. Louis, and many other, lack right support for children’s education in the three to six o’clock time zone. These areas happen to be some of the roughest in the country because of crime related issues, but more importantly there are not enough aftercare programs to help the children escape the dangerous streets (“Creating”). In areas such as these the kids are fending for themselves against heavy street crimes, which give them no choice but to join the violence. There is no escape for the kids except to pick a side and fend for them.

Piano Techer

...a kid, after school I was always being driven from piano to volleyball to self-defense classes and so on. At the time, I thought I was the world’s busiest teenager. However, after all these years, I can easily see that I have gained some important benefits from those activities. Playing the piano is probably the greatest benefit. In the meantime, it would be a big lie for me to say that my appreciation for playing the piano came immediately. Since the time I was ten years old until I was twelve or thirteen, I absolutely detested Sunday afternoons. Of course by then, it was not called Sunday for me but the torturous “piano day”. I had to practice all the morning before the lesson in the afternoon, and became totally exhausted in the evening. When it was finally over, I had relief as of am incredible amount of weight had been pulled from my shoulders. In those days, I never got to see the importance of having those lessons, practicing for hours, and even playing those tunes. As much as I tried, I could never find a way to enjoy it; it was no more than some never-ending horrible homework for me. But today, I want to thank my teacher for forcing me to appreciate the art of music. Now, I can easily list playing the piano as one of the most refreshing aspects of my life. Whenever I feel sadness, I always have the chance to be up in clouds after a couple of minutes. Swaying back and forth, I can surrender myself to the soothing tunes and get lost in the harmony. I believe very few...

Ernest Hemingway

...Mini essay about Ernest Hemingway’s ”Mr and Mrs Elliot” Ernest Hemingway’s typical style of writing is called “minimalism”. The style is also used in this story. A plot defines the genre with few persons, few adjectives, which make the story less describing, and a short story. All these things are shown in this story. Even though the narrator is all knowing, he doesn’t use a psychological describing of the persons, but instead shows their personality through action and dialogue. For example you don’t get to know much about Mr and Mrs Elliot’s past. But if you want the whole and true story you have to read between the lines. Questions is coming up like is she really lesbian? Who do we have to feel sorry for? In the start of the story you may be confused, because he describes a bullfight. But if you read the whole story you can see that the bullfight is a synonym for what Mr Elliot goes threw. In the introduction a boy is hidden away under the cape, just like Mr Elliot is hidden away in his own room at the end of the story. The story have a very dynamic mood all the way threw and even though it’s the man who is left alone in a room in the end and the women who lays in bed with her girlfriend, you still get the feeling that it’s the lady who is miserable. All along she has been living in this illusion of a perfect life; Her having a baby with a young, talent man that apparently only have loved her. She tries to escape her real identity; that she’s a lesbian and that she’s way...

My Favorite Place

...Miranda Turvin May 21, 2012 ENC 1102 Descriptive Essay Working to find my inner peace, I go from place to place just looking for the solitude. A warm, comforting place that I may call my own. That place has been found and not many can claim it for it is mine. Out in the rolling country side of Fort Meade, Florida is a dream just unfolding. The Sunkist sunrise and sunset, the breath taking stars, and the calm, solitary squeeze against my being just makes it all the more better. On the outskirts of the Lilliputian town there is nothing more than the everlasting land where it’s hard to tell where the sky starts and where it stops. Nothing more than a relationship between nature and myself. Cool breezes drag the scent of pine trees and water through the air and the grass grows tall and dark green. Hawks, pigeons, and quails make beautiful music as their aria begins to sync. So the only sounds you can hear are the arias being sung and the wind blowing through my hair. The sunset glows of many pinks, yellows, lavenders, and blues as the day begins to kiss the land goodnight. The numerous birds flee to their nests as they begin to drift into slumber as the night is just beginning. The luminous moon rises to the center of the dark, velvet curtain. Its illumination kisses every tree, strand of grass, and the mist obscuring the few houses that scatter the land. Although the birds are nestled in their homes, the foxes, raccoons, and creatures of the night come out to find their...

Farewell to Arms

...Mohsen Jamal Mr. Andrews ENG3U1 22 March, 2016 Ineffective Writing Style in Farewell to Arms World War I was one of the most desolating tragedies that the human race ever faced. The novel, Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, is one of many famous and historic novels that date back to World War One. Farewell to Arms is a well-known novel solely based on the content inside of its covers, and it has also been ‘labelled’ as one of Hemingway’s greatest novels. Although the novel is famous for its interior content, the introductory chapters in the novel are ineffective and misleading. The chapters lack relevant information, and they are abundant in insignificant amounts of material which leads the reader to struggle when understanding the plot. For example, the first two chapters spend more time explaining the surroundings and settings of the novel, rather than providing valuable information that would assist in comprehension of the novel so far. The first two chapters take place in the small Italian village where Henry lives in. Also, Hemingway struggles to express the story through the novel medium, the novel spends many chapters repetitively explaining the same event or conflict. For example, the novel spends three chapters describing Henry’s encounters with Catherine Barkley on his way to work every day. Moreover, during these encounters, no new information or drama is presented. Finally, the novel hesitates to describe characters thoroughly, and it gives a very feint interpretation...

Frederic Henry's Death

...War and combat injury can lead a soldier to take drastic measures to change his life for the better. In A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway divulges Frederic Henry’s life from his time stationed as an ambulance driver with the Italian army to his desertion. Frederic is a character who evolves over the course of the war and ends up becoming an empathetic yet tough character who is abandoned by his hope of eternal happiness in the end. Frederic Henry’s story is one of impending tragedy, he can be looked at as a round character who mostly looks out for himself. When we meet first meet Frederic, he is lost in a world of alcohol, sex, and personal desires. Frederic finds pleasure in alcohol and women on his leave. Frederic then meets a nurse by the name of Catherine Barkley during his time as an ambulance driver for the American Red Cross. At the front lines, Frederic is nearly blown up by an enemy mortar shell, lodging several pieces of shrapnel into his legs.He is then transferred to an American hospital where Catherine follows him there. In his book, A Farewell to Arms, Hemingway portrays Frederic as a character who does what he wants, and who is concerned mostly about himself rather than others. When Frederic states “I worried in the night about someone coming up, but Catherine said they were all asleep”(101). This quote shows the reader that Frederic is merely concerned about the punishment that will receive rather than the punishment that Catherine would receive if they are...

Overtime issue on peak day: total wet berries in one peak day:  18340bbls x 70% = 12838bbls processing rate: 600bbls/hr (bottle neck) total working hours = 12838bbls / 600bbls/hr = 21.4 hrs overtime = 21.4hrs - 12hrs = 9.4 hrs. (We found that two shifts can help with the situation, which means that the workers will work 16 hours a day (7am-3pm, and 3pm - 11pm). And in this scenario, overtime should be 21.4 hrs - 16hrs = 5.4hrs.) 6. Truck waiting We assume that trucks starts arriving at 7am, and we already knew the bottle neck will be the drying stage only for wet berries, so Inventory piled up rate = rate of wet berries needed to be processed - processing rate of bottle neck = 18340bbls x 70% / 12 hrs - 600bbls/hr = 1070bbls / hr - 600bbls / hr = 470bbls / hr (a barrel of cranberries weighs 100lbs) And we know bins #17 - #27 (total 11 bins) can hold 3200bbls, so we can get how long wet berries will be filled in the bins. 3200bbls / 470bbls/hr = 6.8 hrs, which means...

Theatre Arts

...I viewed a play from the Oliver National Theatre in London broadcasted on the 31st of January 2015. The name of this play is ‘A Small Family Business’. It began at 7:30pm at the Eileen L. Auditorium in Paraquita Bay. The play as written by Alan Ayckbourn. The designer is Tim Hatley, the lighting designer is Paul Anderson and the sound director is Gareth Fry. The main actors are Jack McCracken, played by Nigel Lindsay, Poppy McCracken, played by Debra Gillett, Samantha McCracken, played by Alice Skyes, Desmond Ayes, played by Neal Barry and Benedict Hough, and played by Matthew Cottle. The play is about Jack McCracken and his entrepreneurial greed after taking over his father-in-law’s business. Upon his takeover he is approached by a private detective named Mr. Benedict Hough, who has knowledge of some compromising information. He later then realizes that his extended family is known thieves and adulterers who plunders the business from their home. It then concludes with a small housewarming party with their trouble, Mr Hough, dead. The acting was a little more developed than I thought. It was on-point in some areas and in others not so good. At first I thought Niky Wardley, the character Anita McCracken, was over acting but u then realized that that was supposed to be the kind of character she was; boastful. At some point in time Poppy’s back was shown to the audience. I liked the character Samantha McCracken. Her part was played very well. I noticed in the end and beginning...
