...lightbulbs to organic and locally produced food. Thus, it might include products, processes, and services that reduce environmental impact or improve natural resource use. 2 Our review of 25 regional and national reports on the green economy (see Further Reading) found that though few bother to define the green economy, all agree that clean energy is its core. The reports vary in how much they emphasize environmental and/or job quality. The switch to clean energy will of course improve environmental quality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and impact sustainability by reducing energy use. However, just 16 of the reports mention transportation and infrastructure as part of the green economy, despite the key role of built form and city planning in shaping energy use. Only the reports by Apollo Alliance, Green for All, and the Center on Wisconsin Strategy focus on job quality, typically defined as well-paid jobs with benefits and opportunities for advancement. Figure 1 shows our conceptualization of the green economy. The green economy map groups green businesses into 17 categories, based on a review of industries mentioned in the 25 reports. It also highlights how frequently each industry sector is mentioned in the reports (with the darkest shades representing the sectors cited most...

...Department of State PARTICIPANT BACKGROUND GUIDE INTRODUCTION: “CRISIS IN DARFUR” Whether the murder, rape, pillage, and displacement of tens of thousands in the Darfur region of Sudan is labeled a tragedy, or civil war, or ethnic cleansing, or genocide “in slow motion” 1, the world can’t ignore what is going on in western Sudan. According to the UN, over 2.1 million people are believed to have left their homes, and up to 70,000 have been killed. Other estimates put the death toll higher, up to 400,000. International media has only limited access due to the remoteness and instability in this vast region the size of France. So we don’t see all the day to day details of suffering as we did, for example, in late 1998 in Kosovo. Those images and reports helped trigger UN ultimatums and eventual NATO intervention in 1999. After the Holocaust, the world said “never again” should we stand by and watch while millions are slaughtered. After the Cambodian genocide of the 1970s, after the Rwandan genocide of 1994, and after the mass killings in Srebrenica in Bosnia in 1995, the world also stood by, and then said “never again.” And now we have Darfur. Thus Darfur can be seen as a profound test of the credibility of the international community: the United Nations, the international NGO community, the African Union, and citizens and governments around the world. Is there the will to act in Darfur or will we stand by once again? Questions to consider: On the political level: Is it a rebellion? Is...

...Chennai, March 28 (IANS) The Japanese earthquake and tsunami may not adversely affect the Indian automobile sector in the short term, but the impact over medium to long term will have to be seen, credit rating agency ICRA said Monday. In a statement, the agency said that several challenges could emerge in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami. These include disruption in supplies of vehicles and vehicle assemblies in India, cost pressures arising from appreciation of the Japanese yen, delays in model launches and in investments by Japanese players in the Indian market. According to ICRA, other difficulties include rising costs of raw materials like steel, rising interest rates - which Indian automotive firms are already grappling with - and increase in customs duty on pre-assembled engine and gearbox or transmission mechanism that takes effect from April 1 this year. 'While the domestic automotive industry has posted strong growth across segments during 2010-11 so far, the cost push factors such as higher commodity prices, foreign exchange volatility (especially with respect to the yen) and increase in the landed costs of imports are some factors that may adversely affect the financial performance of automotive and auto-ancillary players over the short term,' said Subrata Ray, senior vice president and company head for Corporate Ratings divison. While the Indian subsidiaries of Japanese original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the two-wheeler segment and...
