...Ahsan Khademi Task 1: Know the range of different businesses and their ownership Unit 1: The Business Environment Extended Diploma in Business Jamal Assiamah Small and Medium Enterprises in the United Kingdom by Ahsan Khademi In this assignment, I have just found employment as a junior business advisor for Newham Borough council. Over the next few weeks, the council is planning to run a series of exhibitions on small and medium enterprises in the United Kingdom. The idea is to raise the profile of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the UK, especially in England and, where appropriate, highlight their success. The exhibition will be known as ‘SMEs in the United Kingdom’. Overview of Argos Argos is a British retailer store operating in only in United Kingdom and Ireland. With over 750 stores and 800 million websites, the company trades both through physical stores and online, are making it one of the largest high street retailers online in England. ...JOURNAL OF MANAGERIAL ISSUES Vol. XXII Number 4 Winter 2010: 456-475 Incumbents Adaptation to Competence-Destroying Change: Role of Prior Experience and Knowledge Sourcing Mujtaba Ahsan Assistant Professor of Management Pittsburg State University Assistant Professor of Management State University of New York at Oneonta Mine Ozer Assistant Professor of Management California State University, East Bay For the past several decades, the topic of new technological developments has been of interest to strategy scholars (Ansoff and Stewart, 1967; Cooper and Schendel, 1976; Rosenbloom and Cusamano, 1987; Rothaermel, 2001a, 2001b; Tushman and Anderson, 1986). Scholars have repeatedly focused on this topic as innovation and new product development are critical for a firm’s survival and growth (Penrose, 1995) and have stated that one of the core competencies needed to develop new technologies is the ability to assimilate and recombine knowledge in unique combinations (Rosenkopf and Nerkar, 2001). Simply put, successful innovation and new product development require the ability to create and use new knowledge to offer novel products or services to customers. Research indicates that firms who possess prior experience are in a better position to innovate (Carroll et al., 1996; Henderson and Cockburn, 1994; Klepper and Simons 2000; Nerkar and Roberts, 2004). Prior studies have also highlighted the importance of knowledge and experience in enabling firms to successfully adapt...

...Car Warranty Accruals Joshua McClellan, November 16, 2015 Car Warranty Accruals Joshua McClellan, November 16, 2015 Inaccuracies in generating cost estimates Inaccuracies in generating cost estimates Memorandum: To: Chase Chasington, General Warranty Manager, Ford Co. From: Joshua McClellan, Accounting Date: November 16, 2015 Subject: Warranty Estimates and Costs Here is the report I put together to summarize the current state of warranty costs in the car industry. It is as we suspected. Warranty accrual methods are inaccurate at best, and actual warranty costs are very different from estimated amounts. I believe this can be remedied with time and effort, however. I hope the information presented in this report will help you to convince the higher ups that changes are needed to make accurate cost and profit projections. The solution to this problem, although clear, is not easily defined. We will need to take further action to fully define what steps need to be taken to better estimate warranty costs. I am grateful to the help of my fellows in the accounting department. Their assistance in gathering data on costs was invaluable. I also appreciate the opportunity you gave to stand out by approving my request to research this topic. ...days of partnership with Uber (Elliott, J., 2014). The drivers also need to have a police background check done, and that’s it. These bare bone prerequisites have lead UberX to be scrutinized by the provincial and municipal governments, as well as the taxi industry. The scrutiny comes from Uber refusing to abide by the rules and regulations set out by the Passenger Transportation Board and the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), as they say the Passenger Transportation Act is archaic, and does not adhere to the ride sharing industry. The taxi industry feels Uber is an illegal taxi service, putting the safety of the passengers and drivers at risk, and creating unfair competition by not being legally licensed under the PTB (Ahsan, S. and Hensley, L., 2015). As the commercial ride sharing industry continues to expand, the B.C. government needs to address public policy issues such as...

...Littering Fatima Ahsan The topic of littering has been discussed for many years. Everyday people see littering either occurring or doing it themselves. People see it on highways, parks, and even their own lawns. Littering is also found all over the world, even the cleanest countries. People should not litter. One reason is that it can harm the environment. This is because the chemicals can seep into the soil. For example, when oil is dumped, then it affects the plant life. Critics argue that it doesn’t harm the environment, but they are wrong because dumped oil really does affect plant life. That it can harm the environment is one reason, but there are many more. Another reason is that it can deplete the aesthetic value of property. This is because trash makes property look less appealing. For example, when trash covers a state park, then less people would want to go there. Critics argue that littering does not deplete the aesthetic value of property, but they are wrong because littering does make a property look less appealing. That littering can deplete the aesthetic value of property is another reason, but there are still many more. A final reason is that it can cost people money. This is because sanitation workers work for the government which pays them with our tax money. For example, when the highway is covered with trash, sanitation workers are called to clean it up. Then they are paid with our tax money. Another example is that when...
