A Day of Disability

It is never convenient when disability and impairment strikes. This is an all too familiar scenario for thousands of Canadians. One minute they are just like you and I, and the next minute they are adapting to serious injury or disease that alters their mobility, limits their participation in various events, and restricts their activities to a few that are accessible and acceptable.
This assignment will expose you to the sudden adaptations that individuals, just like you must struggle with, when accommodating their new ‘abilities’ and carrying on with their chosen lifestyle as best they can. You will be taking on the position of an individual with an impairment. You will be given a variety of mobility aides to be used for 24 hours, wherever you go, whatever you do, to expose you to the advantages, challenges, and emotions that individuals with impairments experience while living with disability. Try to manage/maintain your ‘role’ for the full duration of the 24 hour period using the equipment provided. Don’t cheat by getting up and walking, or leave your equipment at home when you go out shopping. Perform all your plans and ADLs as usual but incorporate the physical challenge into your activity . Recruit help, modify your environment, detour if necessary, rethink how to carry on with your usual daily routine.
When you return to school the following day you will give your equipment to a team member and they will begin their day on the AIDES TOUR. Objectives: 1. Experience the life challenges of living with an impairment for 24 hours 2. Reflect on your exposure and how solutions were generated to solve some of the problems encountered. 3. Reflect on the interdisciplinary collaboration necessary for a successful transition back into mainstream society. 4. Explore the intercultural challenges that an individual would face in the same situation.

ADL’s (bathing, toileting, dressing, meals leisure etc.), architectural challenges, physical readiness/ for the impairment, equipment appropriateness, attitudes, emotions, public acceptance/awareness/attitudes. Grades will be reflective of the depth, thoroughness, introspection and insightfulness reported in your experience.
Part #2:

Consider Canada’s Aboriginal/First Nations Population. Imagine you are a member of the Mushkegowuk people, an isolated Cree First Nations community situated along the James Bay Coast and within the coastal plain. How might this same situation you encountered (having this same disability, this equipment, etc) be different if you were “transplanted into” this native community? What or whom would be a resource to you? Consider personal, social, infrastructural spiritual and financial points to this setting. Be sure to site your reference(s) for this question....(Articles, video, texts, person(s) interviewed, etc....)
