...Why waste? Living in the United States we have many things at our convenience, so we tend to be wasteful. Working in a group home, I see electricity, water and food wasted instead of teaching everyone ways to prevent waste. Electricity is one of the biggest waste I see in the house. When I enter the front door, I can feel a nice cool draft. One of the men who lives there, has his door open, with the air conditioner on full blast. Walking into the common area, I hear about four different genres of music and different television shows playing. I can see the house is lit up like a Christmas tree. Every room has a light on even the empty rooms. All four individuals who reside there have their televisions on and radios playing. Staff is watching television in the living room, and the radio in the common area is playing low. The house is room temperature with the central air conditioner on, but the backdoor is open to let the cool air out. Everyone needs to make it a point to switch lights, air conditioners, radios, and televisions and other appliances when they are not needed on. It takes less than a second to throw a switch. Not wasting electricity reduces the bill appreciably. Why pay for the electricity we are not using? In the evening time is when I notice another big waste, water. It is as if someone turned on a sound machine and chose to play the soothing waterfall sound. The housemates are doing dishes, cleaning the kitchen, dining room and fridge separately with the water...

...Are these gadgets really worth all this hype and sensationalism? The markets nowadays are high on the gadget-o-meter.People, especially children and teenagers are competing against each other as to who is more tech-savvy. But we have failed to see the other side of gadgets. Today, every child is glued to the plasma TV set his parents gifted him on his 7th birthday instead of being out there in the park, playing football with his friends. As a result, children have turned themselves into useless couch potatoes. Thanks to e-mailing, people have forgotten how to write letters. Due to this one's creative potential is not being fulfilled. We are very proud to switch on our state-of-art air conditioners whenever we feel even a little warm. But we are blind to the fact that the same air conditioner is causing huge holes in the O-zone layer. So, gadgets do not exactly replicate our life to heaven. On the contrary, they turn us into overdependent fools. So, think again, before you take out your wallet to pay for that latest gadget. And yes, start moving your limbs a...

...Social Responsibly of Business Argument PHI 103: Informal Logic November 3, 2014 In Milton Friedman’s article, “The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase its Profits”, published in The New York Time Magazine back in 1970 Friedman proposes the argument that a corporations social responsibility is to increase profits. “Milton Friedman’s article entitled The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase its Profit is one of the most often used counter arguments for people who would eschew the idea that a corporation should consider more than just shareholders.” (College of Law) While creating a very debatable argument Friedman has opened my eyes to a topic of which I have never thought about or pondered. One premise that he makes is that only people or humans have responsibilities while a corporation may be considered an “artificial person” with artificial responsibilities yet an actual business cannot have social responsibilities. So does this mean corporations are to only look after themselves and shareholders and let customers deal with it? Working for the large corporation Ingersoll Rand I have seen first-hand that profit is more important than satisfied customers. For instance, there was a certain product my store was purchasing locally and selling it at different margins depending on the circumstances and customer. By purchasing this product locally we had the freedom to sell at basically whatever margin we wanted. Almost three months...

...Mark is a maintenance worker at a large post secondary institution. He is one of four general maintenance workers. The work unit also consists of a maintenance mechanic and ten cleaning staff. All staff are unionized. Curtis is the building manager in charge of the work unit and maintenance of the facility. Mark began working at the building six years ago. At that time Steve was the manager. Mark quite liked Steve as a manager and how he ran the facility, as did most of the staff. He was very open and used a participative style of management. Steve also quite liked Mark and even informally hinted that he would be hand picked to take over as building manager when he retired. However, one year ago when Steve did retire, the organization ended up hiring Curtis, who was a tradesperson at another building. Once Curtis took over, he began to implement a number of changes to how work was done in the facility. He implemented maintenance requests and logs to prioritize and track all work done in the facility. Previously much of the requests were taken verbally and not tracked or recorded. Curtis wanted to ensure all maintenance was properly tracked and prioritized by management rather than having staff decide themselves what to make a priority. He also restructured the maintenance workers and made the maintenance mechanic, Bill, the supervisor of the other maintenance workers. This was done as the management duties of the building manager role had expanded to the point where Curtis...
