...Thrust and Lift "Thrust" and "lift" are two other forces that help your plane make a long flight. Thrust is the forward movement of the plane. The initial thrust comes from the muscles of the "pilot" as the paper airplane is launched. After this, paper airplanes are really gliders, converting altitude to forward motion. Lift comes when the air below the airplane wing is pushing up harder than the air above it is pushing down. It is this difference in pressure that enables the plane to fly. Pressure can be reduced on a wing's surface by making the air move over it more quickly. The wings of a plane are curved so that the air moves more quickly over the top of the wing, resulting in an upward push, or lift, on the wing. The Four Forces in Balance History of the Paper Airplane There is some evidence of paper kites and gliders that originated in Ancient China and Japan. In Europe, it was only during the Renaissance period onwards that inventors attempted to create paper models of a machine that could fly. The Wright brothers were the ones who invented airplanes, and they did this by testing out miniature paper models! Toy paper planes only became popular much later, during WWII. Since all materials and supplies were rationed, children made or received airplanes made from paper instead of metal, wood, or...

...Airplane is an invention of mankind that let the people to make the dream of flying come true. From ancient times people were dreaming of flying like the birds. In different periods of time, inventors were trying to achieve how to make it happen by the different means. The first draft of the flying machine was created by Leonardo da Vinci in 15th century, but in 1903 the first real flight was achieved by Wright Brothers. The dream of mankind was finally achieved to fly as a bird. In first years of the twentieth century, airplane industry was developing very quickly. Different countries started to engineer their own planes. Airplane industry was divided into two directions: it became civil, and defensive. In process of two world wars aviation was playing a big role. In 50’s of the last century aviation had changed dramatically. Airplanes started to fly hypersonic speed. There have been invented civil aircrafts and military fighters. Aviation was generating a huge profit. New corporation were founded, such as Boeing, Airbus, European Space Corporation, and Russian soviet State Aircraft Industry. Civil aviation made it possible for people to travel faster and plan long distance voyages all around the world. Air cargo carriage has increased quantities of the products that have been moved and decreased the time of the process, in result economies of the different countries have experienced an unseen before development, and increased an employment all around the world...

...The Airplane and its History Robert Dobson Thomas Edison State University THE AIRPLANE AND ITS HISTORY 2 The Airplane and its History I am currently finishing a Bachelor of Science in Applied Science and Technology degree in Aviation Flight Technology at Thomas Edison State University. I have also been a pilot for twenty years, professionally for the past sixteen years. For these reasons, I have chosen the airplane and its history as the technology that will serve as the subject of this assignment. First, I will explain what an airplane is. Next, I will explain how an airplane works. Finally, I will give a brief history of the airplane. So what is an airplane? I'm joking! Everyone in the world knows what an airplane is unless they've lived in a stone age society their whole life. Even so, I'll begin by defining exactly what an airplane is and how they work. An airplane is a powered, fixed-wing vessel that travels through the air (Airplane, n.d.). The airplane has wings that provide the force of lift in order for the airplane to overcome the force of gravity and climb off the ground and stay airborne. In order for the wings to do their job of providing lift, the airplane must be propelled forward so that the wings can get sufficient airflow to generate the necessary force and overcome the force of drag. The propulsion methods usually employed are through use of engine driven propellers...

...English Composition 02 September 2015 My First Airplane Ride The first time I few on an airplane was thrilling. The fear of the unknown can be very exciting, but also very nerve racking. It was March of 2012, departing from Wichita, layover in Denver, and final destination Seattle Washington. I’ve seen it hundreds of times in the movies, but experiencing it for real is something one just cannot capture on screen. The rush of the takeoff, the smooth flying, even the flight attendants are things I will never forget. The Wichita airport was surprisingly deserted, the long corridors leading to a large, mostly empty room. The emptiness of the huge building was surprising, and had a bit of an eerie feeling. “Well, at least the lines aren’t long” I thought. Check in was easy enough, handing my I.D to the lady behind the counter. With a big smile she handed me my boarding pass, and wished me a safe flight. Going through security didn’t take long. I had heard that I would have to take off my shoes, but I hadn’t thought about my belt. After taking a minute to re-dress myself after the security check point, I looked down at my ticket and headed to the terminal. Finding the terminal gate was also easy, we appeared to be the only flight scheduled that time and for that side of the airport. I found a seat, close to the window and sat down. As the clock ticked closer and closer to the departure time I could feel my nerves rise. Then, the airplane appeared right outside the window. It quietly...

Men vad gjorde man förr i tiden?

...In the 1890’s Otto Lilienthal designed and built over 2,000 top-notch gliders and had a vast amount of information about materials, designs, construction, and handling of gliders. Unfortunately he died during one of his test flights in his glider, but the evolution of gliders did not stop there. Orville and Wilbur Wright were two brothers who were aviation enthusiast and spent their time learning experimenting ways in which they can improve aviation and fly with better equipment. They had kept track and studied Lilienthal’s glider flights, which led the two brothers to build their own gliders. They included new features such as warping the wings slightly so the gliders will bank in flight. They linked the wing-warping controls to a movable rudder in order to make controlled turns in either direction and they also installed forward elevators to control the glider’s ability to climb or descend. The Wright brothers were very intelligent, had a mechanical aptitude, and were very religious when it came to studying the flight machines. As I stated above, they kept track of Lilienthal’s records of flight and his model’s. Their main source was Octave Chanute, who kept them updated with information in the aviation industry. After that they built their own wind tunnel and used new data of different wing shapes and fixed the errors of the past innovators. They then built the glider as the tool to climb or descend, which led them to build a power plant of 12-HP engine, and perfected the...

...written in terms of wing loading and power loading. Since in the design requirements parameters are given in the inequality form, hence a region of point is obtained instead of single point of intersection. This region of favorable points is known as design space. On putting values of all parameters and then plotting in matlab, design space is obtained. The code for plotting the sizing matrix plot is given in Appendix A(a). In the design space the optimum design point is obtained by calculating the score of the point based on its weightage. (The weightage of various design parameters is given in Appendix A(b). REGRESSION ANALYSIS A regression analysis was done to find out the statistical relation between empty weight fraction of an airplane and various design driving parameters such as wing loading, power loading, aspect ratio, dash speed etc. The regression was done by obtaining the values of various design parameters of aircrafts of the same class. The code for regression is given in Appendix B. INITIAL SIZING Initial sizing of weight is one of the first calculations done in early design...

...the Angels and the Musicians. LSD is a drug that makes you hallucinate and amphetamine is a drug that makes you act crazy. Drugs are very bad and at a concert can really make you do things that you will regret. One member from the audience went really crazy. His name was Meredith Hunter. He tried to get on stage but was denied by the Hells Angels. He then came back with a revolver and was attacked by several members of the crowd, including the Hells Angels. The Hells Angels did some good and some bad. The eventually saved a lot of people when they took out Meredith Hunter when he had the revolver. The Hells Angels demonstrated some bad behavior when they got drunk at the concert. They punched the lead singer Marty Balin of the Jefferson Airplanes and knocked him unconscious. They also hit Denis Jewkes, a member of a local band, in the head with an empty beer bottle. She suffered a skull fracture from the incident. Lastly, when Meredith Hunter attacked them, I thought they over killed him. It was good that they stopped him and got the gun away. After that they stab him 5 times and stomped him till he was dead. He was killed by Hells Angel Alan Passaro. Passaro went to court because of murder. There was eight-man and four-woman in the jury that has a discussion for 12 and a half hours, following 17 days of testimony, Passaro’s case was dismissed because the jury's said it was self defense. In my opinion, I think it was self defense but turned into over killed. The only ones that demonstrated...

...Amelia was a 20th century pilot that attempted to fly around the world (equator). This pilot was born on July 24, 1897. She was the first female pilot to fly over the Atlantic ocean. She disappeared over the Pacific on June 2, 1937 and was legally declared dead on January 5, 1939. Her crew was made up of three men named Harry Manning, Fred Noonan, and Paul Mantz. Their original plan was to take off from Oakland, California and fly west. Navigator Fred Noonan got slightly off course when they were aiming for Howland Island. They could not see the island they were aiming for and they crashed. There are many theories about her crashing. The government concluded that she ran out of and then crashed into the Pacific. Another theory says that Amelia was a secret agent sent over to spy on Japan and then got captured. Some people believe that the government has covered up her death. U.S. Military had found her grave, but they were ordered to be destroyed by President Roosevelt because he didn’t want it to draw attention while he was having his election. Eyewitnesses in Saipai that say they had seen Amelia and Fred Noonan. As of June 20 there has been new evidence found. A search party led by Ric Gillepsie went on an underwater search and found plane fragments. Ric Gillepsie and his crew found an aluminum plate thought to be from the plane’s window. One of the most popular theory is that she landed on Gardner Island (now Nikumaroro Island) which was inhabited. On this island TIGHAR...

...Most people think that paper airplanes fly because actual airplanes fly but paper airplanes are actually gliders. That means it’s an aircraft that doesn’t have an engine. Lift, weight and drag are all forces of upon a glider in flight. It must be thrown from something along the lines of a hill or a towed aloft by another airplane. Of course it must be thrown once that it happens it must riley on altitude and gravity to create the velocity for movement like someone rolling down a hill. Then there comes the question what makes paper airplanes fly/glide? Air does you know the thing that we breathe the stuff that is all around us. Now take your hand and turn it sideways to where your pinkie is facing the ground and your thumb is facing the ceiling....

...Airplane Flight Science Fair Project Research Have you ever wondered how an airplane flies? That happens because of four different factors. This paper explains airplane wings, lift, and stalls during flight. Since the science far experiment is what forces affect the airplane wings during a stall. Using different articles from online resources, flight, lift, and stalls were explained in numerous ways. Thrust, Drag, Weight and Lift are the four factors that allow an airplane to take flight. Dunbar (2003) explains these in depth. Thrust is a force that moves an aircraft in the direction of the motion. It is created with a propeller, jet engine, or rocket. Air is pulled in and then pushed out in an opposite direction. One example is a household fan. Drag is the force that acts opposite to the direction of motion. It tends to slow an object. Drag is caused by friction and differences in air...

...It was billed as “the Summer of Love,” a blast of glamour, ecstasy, and Utopianism that drew some 75,000 young people to the San Francisco streets in 1967. Who were the true movers behind the Haight-Ashbury happening that turned America on to a whole new age? In a 25-square-block area of San Francisco, in the summer of 1967, an ecstatic, Dionysian mini-world sprang up like a mushroom, dividing American culture into a Before and After unparalleled since World War II. If you were between 15 and 30 that year, it was almost impossible to resist the lure of that transcendent, peer-driven season of glamour, ecstasy, and Utopianism. It was billed as the Summer of Love, and its creators did not employ a single publicist or craft a media plan. Yet the phenomenon washed over America like a tidal wave, erasing the last dregs of the martini-sipping Mad Men era and ushering in a series of liberations and awakenings that irreversibly changed our way of life. The Summer of Love also thrust a new kind of music—acid rock—across the airwaves, nearly put barbers out of business, traded clothes for costumes, turned psychedelic drugs into sacred door keys, and revived the outdoor gatherings of the Messianic Age, making everyone an acolyte anda priest. It turned sex with strangers into a mode of generosity, made “uptight” an epithet on a par with “racist,” refashioned the notion of earnest Peace Corps idealism into a bacchanalian rhapsody, and set that favorite American adjective, “free,” on a...

...Airplanes In the 1920's, airplanes affected things such as transportation, war technology, and entertainment. For transportation, mail was transported much quicker and people were able to be transported (at a high cost). During World War I, airplanes were used for bombing, reconnaissance, airship raids, and for strategizing. Airplanes were used mainly to gain an advantage in stalemates like trench warfare. For entertainment purposes, they were used in aerobatic maneuvers, stunts, races, shows, and demonstrations. Charles Lindbergh was a great aviator who helped immensely in banishing doubts about the potential of aircrafts by doing the transatlantic solo flight. Traditionally, airplanes were a war weapon that intrigued many people but were not the safest modes of transportation. However, the more modern cultural values were that airplanes exhibited better uses in travel, had many uses in other industries such as business or airmail, and provided great entertainment for the American people. Assembly Line In the 1920's, the assembly line helped to...

...America is Like an Airplane America is driven by a concept of go big or go home. We are consumers of instant gratification, and want to experience life to the fullest no matter the cost. Careless spending on borrowed money has gripped the people into a financial prison. Where the influence of keeping up with the Joneses has weakened society. In an airplane, seating is categorized by three classes. There is first class, main cabin or otherwise known as economy plus, and basic economy. In first class you get to board first, and have time to put your things away while the stewardess brings you a wash cloth and fancy beverage. There is more leg room, and an abundance of space for more comfort. First class gets the best service with the kinder staff. In the economy plus you have a little extra leg room than economy. There is about the same comforts of first class such as being able to board sooner, and faster friendly service. The economy seating is the lowest class seating. Meaning you get the basic necessities needed to endure travel, and if you want more you better get your credit card out to pay for it. In America we have a social structure just as an airplane. We are put into these classes by our net worth....
