...company rely on these applications and systems to manage the people side of business, marketing methods, and accounting processes. Three specific systems are the human resources information system (HRIS), marketing software, and accounting information system (AIS). Now let us look into the inner workings and advantages of these applications and systems. The success of human resources management (HRM) department within a company is dependent on a HRIS. “A human resource information system is defined as computer based application for assembling and processing data related to the human resource management function” (Lawler, 2011, Human Resources Information System, para. 1). An HRIS is a database management system containing multiple files of data relevant to the personnel within the company. The system contains applications that allow users to input, edit, and retrieve data in many forms. Data retrieval is in predefined reports that address many personnel management issues such as application tracking, job evaluations, succession planning, and benefits administration. Additionally, HRISs include tools that users can generate ad hoc reports and select specific cases or even particular parts of cases for review (Lawler, 2011). Marketing makes a company thrive in today’s economic environment. “Marketing software helps to create catalogs, manage marketing projects, segment customer databases” (IBM, 1998-2009, Management Software, para. 2). Companies...

...ACCOUNTING INFORMATION SYSTEMS: COURSE OBJECTIVES, DESCRIPTION, TOPICS, AND ASSIGNMENTS ACCT-5600 DR. NICOLAOU Fall 2010 COURSE STRUCTURE In the modern world, the majority of accounting entries occur electronically. Accountants and auditors store information in databases, managed by enterprise systems that have a set of controls to ensure that transactions and record keeping happen as expected. E-business Web sites handle transactions automatically, with the accounting data going directly into the necessary databases. The concept of a paper trail has become a bit of a misnomer; today, because of accounting information systems, there is often no paper involved at all; however, it is important to establish the flow the data in different areas of the organization, or audit trail, so as to properly exercise internal controls. AISs help in this purpose. At the outset of this course, you will learn the basics of accounting information systems and business processes. Next, you will learn about database management systems, and the design of various database models. Finally, you will learn about how to use internal controls effectively for risk management, as well as the requirements for business reporting. After completing this course, you should not only have a clear idea of how accounting information systems work, but you should also be prepared to design and configure them to meet the record-keeping and risk management requirements of the organization. In addition...

...Little Racist, Nazi, Potty Mouth A review of tay.ai as a new media literary performance. Microsoft’s Tay, an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, has been in the news ever since her launch and almost immediate undoing last month following her vulgar and tasteless tweets. Designed to mimic a 19 year old girl and learn the content and style of what millennials around her age talked about on social networks, she existed particularly on Twitter, Kik and GroupMe (Pierson et al.) as an experiment in conversational understanding. Soon however, the control to her learning was taken over by internet trolls and Tay turned into a dysfunctional puppet acting on the instructions of the trolls that trained her. Her culturally insensitive tweets...

...1577-8517 The impact of Accounting Information Systems (AIS) on performance measures: empirical evidence in Spanish SMEs1 Elena Urquía Grande. Complutense University of Madrid. Spain. eurquiag@ccee.ucm.es Raquel Pérez Estébanez. Complutense University of Madrid. Spain. raquel.perez@ccee.ucm.es Clara Muñoz Colomina. Complutense University of Madrid. Spain. cimunnoz@ccee.ucm.es Abstract. This research study is aimed, based on empirical evidence, at measuring the relationship between the use of the Accounting Information Systems (AIS) by the Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Spain, and firms’ improved performance indicators and productivity. This empirical study is based on a survey carried out among small and medium-sized firms to ascertain the extent to which development and implementation of accounting information systems had taken place, and subsequently an analysis was made as to how much this introduction may impact on improvement in outcome indicators and productivity. As interesting results we have found that there is a positive relationship among the SMEs that use AIS for fiscal and bank management and better performance measures. This research provides value added in accounting literature given the scarcity of works dealing with the relationship between the application and use of AIS and performance and productivity indicators in SMEs in Spain. Keywords: Accounting Information Systems (AIS), Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs), performance...

...A critical review of Suryaningrum et al, 2014, ‘The effectiveness comparison between mobile based learning technology with face-to-face as a teaching method of Accounting Information System’, Global Conference and Finance Proceedings, Volume 9, Number 1. Authors conducted a study on the mobile-based teaching method to test if it will improve the student’s performance not only in technical skills but also in personal skills in learning Accounting Information System. The study was an exploratory research to develop a mobile learning application of Accounting Information Systems and test on the AIS mobile learning application made using the quasi-experimental research design. A pre-test exam was conducted where 50 accounting students who have completed Accounting Information Systems (AIS) courses were provided 20 randomly selected multiple-choice questions from 30 available questions with topic of data warehouse. The research result showed that before the student use mobile technology, their performance was not as expected. This pre-test result will then be compared with their exam score after taking advantage of the mobile learning application program which is still not published to date. The study reveals that the education system until now is mostly done by traditional face-to-face between students and educators with a shift in learning paradigm from conventional to sophisticated learning using technology. The development of ICT had clearly improved the education method...

...the payroll process will be more efficient and effective. This paper will explain how the payroll processing cycle for ‘Mom and Pop’s Grocery Store’ integrates onto an enterprise-wide accounting information system. An enterprise-wide accounting information system “focuses on the business process of the organization as a whole” (Bagranoff, Simkin, & Stand, 2008, p. 7). Business process reengineering (BPR) is a total re-design of processes used by an organization that are no longer effective or efficient (Braganoff et al, 2008, p. 163). The ‘Mom and Pop’s Grocery Store’ will use BPR to update the old payroll process to the new enterprise-wide AIS system. The Accounting Information System (ASI) is a system that is put in place for a company to maintain its accounting system. The input devices commonly associated with AIS systems include: “standard personal computers or workstations running applications; scanning devices for standardized data entry; electronic communication devices for electronic data interchange (EDI) and e-commerce” (Business Glossary, p. 1, 2005, 2000, 1995, 1987). In addition, many financial systems come with Internet settings to allow computers to connect to the “World Wide Web.” Simple preparation is accomplished through computer systems from smallest to largest individual computers to smallest and largest company computers. However, conceptually, the underlying processing model is still the "double-entry" accounting system. The output...

...Google Research and Development Projects TC American Public University System Google Research and Development Projects Google has an arm of their company called Project X that is tasked with researching and developing new and evolving technologies. When many people think about Google they simply think of the company as a search engine and web mail hosting company. The fact is that Google excels in those areas but is also on the forefront of new technologies that have the potential to change how people drive, how internet services are deployed in remote areas, how home environmental systems are controlled and how internet orders are delivered (ExtremeTech, 2015). In particular, Google’s self-driving car, DeepMind artificial intelligence, Project Wing drone, Project Loon balloon internet and Nest home automation technologies show promise to improve the quality of life for many in the world. Google’s research and development mission is to consolidate information from across the world from many sources and then make that data both useful and available to all internet users (Spector, Norvig & Petrov, 2015). Additionally, Google uses the technology to improve existing goods and services as well as improving the environment through clean energy initiatives. Google as a company is focused on rapidly developing and implementing new technology in all areas but the research but the research and development arm is hyper-focused on technology innovation (Research.google.com, 2015)...

...Fraud in the AIS Chad Burrell Professor Daniel Acheampong Accounting Information Systems ACC564 August 14, 2013 Abstract Firm Embezzled There were many failures in the firms accounting system that assisted this embezzlement to last for a decade. Sue Sachdeva was the main accountant at Koss Corporation and it is estimated that she embezzled over 34 million dollars during that time. Sachdeva was able to embezzle this amount through wire transfers, checks, and credit cards (Whitehouse, 2011). The first failure was the age of the AIS. It is estimated that the system was almost 30 years old. There were two offers to purchase a new system and each time Michael Koss, the CEO, denied the request (Whitehouse, 2011). Koss was operating on an outdated accounting system and probably thought that it was okay because he had auditors come in and authenticate the work it did. It is important to have a current system in order to keep accurate reports in keeping the company operating efficiently. Another failure was the reports that were produced by the AIS. Michael Koss never took the time to look at the financial records of the company. Even though he was the CEO of the company, he never took adequate time to read and compare the financial statements on a monthly or yearly basis. SOX The article recounts some specific problems within Koss: * Koss Corporation prepared materially inaccurate financial statements, book and records, and lacked adequate internal...

Journal of Business Ethics Vol. 16, pgs.1175-1184 This entry examines the ethical practices of leaders in a business and their employees involving information control within a business. Specifically it examines whether these executives know if control is being performed and if they deem it ethical. The statement “…executives are generally drawn to those command activities they deem to be "proper and right." but shy away from those that are iniquitous.” R. Dulek has authored six books and publishes more than forty journal articles. He is currently a professor at John R. Miller School of Business at the University of Alabama. W. Motes is a Marketing professor at the same university and has had articles appear in twelve business journals. C. ...Company) & Changing the AIS Karen Bailey Strayer University ACC564 – Accounting Information Systems Professor: Dr. Monica Hubler September 8, 2014 Abstract Migrating to a new accounting information system is not an easy task. Many firms have struggled with this process, even though our textbook makes the process seem quite straightforward. Recently, IBM recapped some of the lessons learned in migrating to a new accounting information system within the federal government. These lessons can be applied to any accounting information system project. Others have developed their own recommendations for best practices and lessons learned involving implementing accounting information systems. However, in order to appreciate what IBM and others are proposing, we need to apply lessons learned to a real-life situation involving the failure to implement an accounting system properly. In Apollon Smyrnis (A Football Company) & Changing the AIS, I will research information related to a real-life accounting information system failure and best practices, as well as lessons learned from implementing the accounting system. In addition to information that I may find during my research, I will also use the following IBM article to complete the assignment: (http://www.businessofgovernment.org/article/what-we-know-now-lessons-learned-implementing-federal-financial-systems-projects). Moreover, in Apollon Smyrnis (A Football Company) & Changing the AIS, I will analyze the accounting...
