ADOLESCENCES ATTITUDES TOWARDS MENTAL ILLNESS Abstract 2 There is a large amount of research evidence which suggests that social acceptance is associated with lower levels of depressive symptoms and a greater willingness to seek mental health support. The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of the extent to which a group of adolescents perceived mental illness as being caused by physical and psychosocial causes and their degree of social acceptance. The participants involved in this study were eight boys and eight girls with a mean age of 14.06 (SD=0.92), who were randomly selected from select high schools in NSW. Participants were presented with a vignette and asked to indicate their level of agreeance with a number of closed ended questions. The results of this study found that adolescents showed less social acceptance of behaviour that was perceived to be related to mental illness. Furthermore, the more mental illness was perceived the greater chance it was attributed to a belief in psychosocial causes. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Kellie!Walker!11546766! ...Knowledge management and organizational performance: Theoretical Study 1. Introduction Knowledge is an asset that needs to be effectively managed. Interest in knowledge management (KM) has grown dramatically in the recent years, as more researchers and practitioners have become aware of the knowledge potential to drive innovation and improve performance. For an organization to remain competitive, it must effectively practice the activities of creating, acquiring, documenting, transferring, and applying knowledge in solving problems and exploiting opportunities. Many researchers argue what the organization comes to know explains its performance. The ultimate test of any business concept, such as KM, is whether it improves business performance. If organizations cannot use knowledge to improve performance, knowledge does not have measurable value. However, management research has often overlooked the role of knowledge and KM in the analysis of organizations and their performance. Most of KM research consists of either theoretical analyses of KM issues or case-based reviews of organizations’ KM practices. Consequently, KM research is short of offering an unambiguous understanding of the role of KM in improving organizational performance. On the other hand, effective KM entails an understanding of the interrelationships that may exist among KM processes such as knowledge acquisition, knowledge creation, knowledge documentation, knowledge transfer, and knowledge application. These...

College; trude.olsen@hih.no Stensaker, Inger G.; NHH Norw.Schl of Economics and Business Adm.; inger.stensaker@nhh.no As organizations change and adapt to pressures in the external and internal environment, managers and employees are required to learn new competencies and skills. Ideally, new skill requirements should be identified and developed early in the change process in order to ensure that managers and employees are ready to face their new tasks and roles when the changes are implemented. However, despite good intentions at the top management level, employees and middle managers often report uncertainty and a lack of the necessary skills required to implement change. In this paper, we report from a qualitative study of two planned organizational change initiatives in the public sector. The changes involved new work tasks and managerial roles for a group of middle managers. Although the skill requirements appeared to be clear and formal training was initiated, a number of uncertain and ambiguous issues emerged among the change recipients. We examine the types of uncertainty and ambiguity that emerged and how change recipients attempted to handle these challenges. Our findings suggest that although necessary and important, formal training procedures are not adequate for resolving competence-related uncertainties and ambiguities during change. Instead, more informal and horizontal communication appears to successfully resolve ambiguities about new skill...
