...Directness The main strength of observation is that it provides direct access to the social phenomena under consideration. Instead of relying on some kind of self-report, such as asking people what they would do in a certain situation, you actually observe and record their behaviour in that situation. This, in principle at least, avoids the wide range of problems associated with self-report. In an interview situation or in response to a questionnaire item, for example, a person may not always provide accurate or complete information, or they might answer in ways that correspond to what is socially desirable.  There is a recognised source of bias in self-report techniques referred to as a 'social desirability set', which means that in many spheres of social life there are socially desirable ways of behaving and, consciously or unconsciously, individuals will tend to respond in that way, although in the 'real world' they might behave differently. Asking children whether they would tend to be helpful to other children in certain situations, for example, would be susceptible to such a source of bias Diversity, Flexibility and Applicability Observation can take diverse forms, from informal and unstructured approaches through to tightly structured, standardised procedures and can yield associated diverse types of data, both qualitative and quantitative. Observation, therefore, is applicable in a wide range of contexts. Disadvantages Practicability One of the main disadvantages...

Team Working

...RAYA KORUDOVA TEAM WORKING Team-working is a contemporary form of achieving goals used in all kinds of contexts. “Work teams are groups of people embedded in organizations, performing tasks that contribute to achieving the organization’s goals. They have the necessary authority, autonomy and resources to achieve these objectives.” (West, 2012) However, the term “team” is easily mistaken with the term “group”. A group differentiates from a team by its larger size, necessity of a leader, style and spirit. (Mullins, 2008) There are various reasons why people choose to work in teams. First of all, the hierarchical structure that slows the process of working can be avoided as the individual is no longer the decision maker but the team is taking that role and speeds the process. (West, 2012) Secondly, the team allows the participants to learn from each other. (West, 2012) Some members might have different age, experience or backgrounds and thus incorporating unusual, fresh ideas and knowledge. Another advantage of working in teams is the opportunity to improve the employees’ motivation and commitment. (Mullins, 2008) Being a part of something, having the feeling that you belong somewhere brings a sense of responsibility and commitment in one’s mind. The more committed the employee feels, the more motivated and hardworking he becomes. On the other hand working in teams can have sometimes negative aspects. Firstly, not all the members might be equally active. (Joseph, 2012)There...

Domino’s “Special” Delivery:

...Franko Ali, Stephanie Eckart, Yevgeniya Litvinenko, Kathrine Marazita DOMINO’S “SPECIAL” DELIVERY: Going Viral Through Social Media Pizza is one of the most well known American dining staples, and is considered easy and inexpensive for the average consumer. Domino’s Pizza is one of the most recognized and largest pizza outlets out of thousands of pizza brands around today. In a market segment that is highly competitive with numerous options of different brand options, each company works tirelessly to maintain brand image and corporate standards. DEFINING THE PROBLEM The Domino’s Pizza Company faced its largest problem in its 49-year history in April 2009. The Vice President of Corporate Communications, Tim McIntyre was alerted to an issue regarding two Domino’s store employees, who would be later identified as Kristy Hammond and Michael Setzer, were behaving inappropriately. These employees posted videos online of themselves depicting unsanitary, disrespectful and inappropriate behavior on the job. These two employees didn’t think anything of their behavior until they got caught, then offered a lousy and unprofessional apology. Once the uploaded videos surfaced, Domino’s corporate executives were forced to act quickly. In order to do this they needed to ensure that no more videos would be posted, identify the employees and repair any possible damage to the reputation. McIntyre knew the videos could easily have had a larger impact on the Domino’s brand. All major...

Faith and Science

...Faith and Science Ther are several principle Albl uses as guidelines for believers use of religion and science. All his principles appear to provide an appropriate balance between religion and science. These principles allow us to use religion and science with an outlook somewhere between fideism and nonoverlapping magisterium (NOMA). Religion should not be too rigid or close-minded and science alone cannot explain the transcedent. Of all Albl’s priciples, I believe that dialogue between religion and science allows each to influence the other is the most relevant (95). This principle directly relates to the work of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Jay Goulds NOMA concept (Albl 88). Science operates in the empirical realm whereas religion operates in the spiritual realm. Science provides explanations for why the universe is the way it is. Religion on the other hand provides explanations for what transcendent entity created the universe. Yet if it were not for religion perhaps most of the scientific theories we believe today would not exist. The spiritual connection with the transcendent provides the motivation for scientists to explore and answer the unanswered. This includes scientists who are non-believers as well. Scientists who are non-believers seek to answer questions, which will provide substantial theories for transcendence. This why religion and science having a dialogue between them is crucial to there existence and evolution. It is ideal when scientists develop theories...

Is the End Really Near?

...If you only had one more day to live, how would you spend it and who would you spend it with? These are the questions that 7 billion people are going to be faced with in a few weeks. This is called the ‘’Theory of 2012’’ or “The end of the world’’ According to this theory, December 21, 2012 is the ‘’last day of earth’’. No matter how many reasons are given to prove this theory, there are still many controversies and speculations. The 2012 apocalypse is false because of too many proofs to this theory, the vague and useless information and the lack of media development. If the apocalypse were to be true, there would be only one proof for this theory. One popular known reason is the Mayan calendar. This calendar was created over thousands of years ago and according to their calendar December 21, 2012 was the end. People also believed that the Mayans predicted series or misfortunate events marking that date. Another theory also was discovered which was the crashing of Nibiru. This proof was discovered by scientists that a planet under this name will hit the earth changing everything. If the world would have an end, there wouldn’t be more than one proof. The problem with this so called apocalypse is that if one would want to find out more information about why the world is going to end, that would be a difficult task to accomplish. If you look in books, or search online they will give you very minimal information. This is because the theory is so undeveloped and unexpected...

What Is the Most Important Thing to Survive a Disaster?

...What Is The Most Important Thing To Survive A Disaster? ‘The End is Near’ – While this short but somewhat perturbing phrase might have become a common sight since the Mayan prediction of 2012, reactions to it vary from one person to another. However, deep down, everyone realizes that it could indeed be the grave truth and naturally feel apprehensive. In such a situation, the next sensible step is to acquire training in survival skills and make adequate preparations should disaster strike sooner than expected. Given the fact that ‘End’ could arrive in various ways – an explosion, a natural disaster or an accident being some of the possibilities – the onus is on you to grasp the situation and swing into action swiftly and logically. Ensuring survival is the main objective and for fulfillment of this goal, presence of one factor, namely the will and determination to survive followed by resilience, is a must. True though it is that your training will teach you what to do in the event of a disaster and how to organize things around you, first and foremost it is imperative to maintain clarity of thought and resisting panic attacks. Panic is the first reaction that most humans exhibit when faced with a disaster irrespective of its magnitude and it does take plenty of fortitude to overcome this emotion but it must be done. Letting panic sweep over your thoughts would not just cloud your judgment but also plunge you into the depths of despair wherein the temptation to give up would...

Wom Dove Case Study

...forward thinking series ‘Evolution of beauty’ Dove Case Study An applied buzz & brand activation research model IS-2007-008 2 ‘Evolution of beauty’: Dove Case Study An applied buzz & brand activation research model Summary / Abstract In traditional campaign post-testings only the impact of direct exposure (people actually having seen the creative) is measured. By doing so, all dynamics behind the buzz in terms of word-of-mouth and word of mouse and how this influences consumer dynamics remains unknown. Insights in the content and dynamics of these conversations could be very useful to understand the success (or failure) of a campaign however. Traditional approaches also neglect the actions people undertake after having viewed a commercial message, while commercials can be found on sites like YouTube and are shared around the world. This study tests Dove’s viral movie ‘Evolution’ and confirms that measuring indirect exposure as well consumer actions undertaken after ad exposure provides advertisers with new and useful insights. 3 Introduction The consumer 2.0 the cocktail party goes digital Today’s empowered 2.0 consumer is very well informed, strongly connected with peers (and millions of surfers in general), has the ability to unify with them & share ideas but also has the tools to create proper content beyond control of marketers. Myths and Facts

...2012 – The Facts Hi there, Thank you for making the effort to become more informed about 2012! The 2012 meme is huge. Hundreds of books have been written, numerous documentaries have been made, and of course there was a blockbuster movie. Unfortunately the facts have been deeply buried, and virtually every piece of information you come across is speculation and trickery, disguised as fact. The aim of this article is to ignore all the extreme speculations and fabrications, and just present the known facts. Plus I’ll throw in some of the more plausible scenarios, to help you understand what might soon be upon us. Everything that follows is either accepted fact, or will be denoted as being disputable or an opinion. Regards, Robert Bast - Melbourne, Australia, 2010 The Long Count Calendar The ancient Mayans had roughly 20 calendars, all of which were short in duration, with the cycles equating to astronomical phenomena, or were intended to relate to history repeating over and over again via prophecy. Except for the Long Count calendar. The Long Count is the Mayan equivalent of our calendar, in that it assigns unique dates over a long period of time. A short numerical description (like 12/6/1976 in our calendar) pinpoints a place in time. Unlike our calendar, which starts with the birth of Christ and heads towards infinity in two directions, the Long Count has a definite beginning and a definite end. The start date of the Long Count calendar rarely gets a mention...

Doomsday

...Doomsday How does doomsday become popular? 1. The Mayan calendar says sun era will end on December 21, 2012. Many believers believe that the end of December 21, 2012 is the end of the world: a wandering planet will impact the earth, thus the whole world will be destroyed. According to ancient Mayan calendar, 2012’s winter solstice marks a 144000 days of the end of the cycle. This period began in the legendary Maya creation day, already repeated 12 times. And 13 times will come to an end in 2012, to complete a full 5200 creation cycle. There is a very short time before the end of the world coming; the rumor has become the hot topic of fiction films and television programs 2. Hollywood films and social network blow up the rumor of the end of the world: People’s fanaticism to "eschatology" stem from the Hollywood disaster film "2012". In the film, the Mayan prophecy: in the December 21, 2012, the fifth sun age coming, the sun will disappear, and the earth will violent shake, then the earth will be destroyed. Why do people so trust Mayan prophecy? Because of the mysterious Mayans were very proficient in astronomical figures. As early as 3000 years ago, they accurately calculated the time about revolution of the earth and running of other stars. The accuracy even surprised modern scientists 3. Frequent natural disasters increase people’s concern: The earth goes into seismic active period, so some people’s end guesses also warm up. On March 11, 2011, level 9.0 earthquake happened...

End of World

...2012: Beginning of the End or Why the World Won't End? 12.22.11 Scenes from the motion picture "2012." Courtesy Columbia Pictures. Remember the Y2K scare? It came and went without much of a whimper because of adequate planning and analysis of the situation. Impressive movie special effects aside, Dec. 21, 2012, won't be the end of the world as we know. It will, however, be another winter solstice. Much like Y2K, 2012 has been analyzed and the science of the end of the Earth thoroughly studied. Contrary to some of the common beliefs out there, the science behind the end of the world quickly unravels when pinned down to the 2012 timeline. Below, NASA Scientists answer several questions that we're frequently asked regarding 2012. Question (Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012. Answer (A): Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012. Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012? A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter...

H&M Case

...9-713-512 REV: MARCH 5, 2014 JOHN R. WELLS GALEN DANSKIN Hennes & Mauritz, 2012 In 2012, Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) was the second-largest specialty apparel retailer in the world. Sales for fiscal 2012 were $18.1 billion, up 11% from the previous year, and operating profits were $3.3 billion, up 8.3%. H&M operated 2,776 stores, 93% of them outside its home base of Sweden. Over the previous decade, revenues had grown 15% per year and operating profits, 18%. Although Gap, Inc. (Gap) began the millennium as the clear global leader in the apparel retail market with sales more than four times larger than those of H&M, H&M had grown quickly and passed Gap in 2009. However, Spain’s Inditex, with its fast-fashion chain, Zara, had done even better. It passed H&M in sales in 2005 and, by 2011, had also become more profitable. H&M had also lagged behind Inditex in supply pipeline speed, brand diversification, online retail presence, and expansion into China. Meanwhile, the world’s leading hypermarket chains, including Wal-Mart and Tesco, were making significant headway in apparel. In 2012, CEO Karl-Johan Persson, grandson of the company’s founder Erling Persson, promised increased expansion into underdeveloped markets, a stronger push to online retailing, and the launch of a major new retail brand. He noted, “We are looking forward to an exciting 2013 full of new opportunities. We have great respect for the macroeconomic climate and how it may affect consumption in many...
