...thinks of romance they think of the basic Hollywood romance… girl and boy meet, fall in love, get married and live happily ever after. Although Alexandre Dumas is best known for historical fiction, his writing has an undertone of romance with chivalry and gentlemanly ways that never went out of style. In “The Man in the Iron Mask”, the third book in “The Three Musketeer Trilogy”, Dumas wrote about bonds that were indestructible. During Dumas’ youth, he battled poverty, lack of education, and racism. “A gentleman once began to make racist remarks within earshot, and when he finally said, “Mr. Dumas probably knows a thing or two about Negroes, since so much black blood runs in his veins,” Dumas coolly responded, “Yes, of course. My father was a mulatto, my grandfather was a Negro and my great-grandfather was an ape. You see, sir, my family began where yours left off.”(Foote-Greenwell p. 2). “In 1823 Dumas moved to Paris with nothing but his wits, memory and elegant writing. He got a job as a...

...Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston. After being orphaned at age two, he was taken into the home of a childless couple–John Allan, a successful businessman in Richmond, Va., and his wife. Allan was believed to be Poe’s godfather. At age six, Poe went to England with the Allans and was enrolled in schools there. After he returned with the Allans to the U.S. in 1820, he studied at private schools, then attended the University of Virginia and the U.S. Military Academy, but did not complete studies at either school. After beginning his literary career as a poet and prose writer, he married his young cousin, Virginia Clemm. He worked for several magazines and joined the staff of the New York Mirror newspaper in 1844. All the while, he was battling a drinking problem. After the Mirror published his poem “The Raven” in January 1845, Poe achieved national and international fame. Besides pioneering the development of the short story, Poe invented the format for the detective story as we know it today. He also was an outstanding literary critic. Despite the acclaim he received, he was never really happy because of his drinking and because of the deaths of several people close to him, including his wife in 1847. He frequently had trouble paying his debts. It is believed that heavy drinking was a contributing cause of his death in Baltimore on October 7, 1849. ...the average of the first and the third;[43]this became known as the Law of Triads.[44] German chemist Leopold Gmelin worked with this system, and by 1843 he had identified ten triads, three groups of four, and one group of five. Jean-Baptiste Dumas published work in 1857 describing relationships between various groups of metals. Although various chemists were able to identify relationships between small groups of elements, they had yet to build one scheme that encompassed them all.[43] In 1858, German chemist August Kekulé observed that carbon often has four other atoms bonded to it.Methane, for example, has one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. This concept eventually became known as valency; different elements bond with different numbers of atoms.[45] In 1862, Alexandre-Emile Béguyer de Chancourtois, a French geologist, published an early form of periodic table, which he called the telluric helix or screw. He was the first person to notice the periodicity of the elements. With the elements arranged in a spiral on a cylinder by order of increasing atomic weight, de Chancourtois showed that elements with similar properties seemed to occur at regular intervals. His chart included some ions and compounds in addition to elements. His paper also used geological rather than chemical terms and did not include a...

...list of Frequently Used Symbols and Notation A text such as Intermediate Financial Theory is, by nature, relatively notation intensive. We have adopted a strategy to minimize the notational burden within each individual chapter at the cost of being, at times, inconsistent in our use of symbols across chapters. We list here a set of symbols regularly used with their specific meaning. At times, however, we have found it more practical to use some of the listed symbols to represent a different concept. In other instances, clarity required making the symbolic representation more precise (e.g., by being more specific as to the time dimension of an interest rate).
