...Common Application Essay Throughout my life I have experience failure just like every other normal human being. But unlike some people I choose to learn from my mistakes and do my best to never repeat them again. One account of failure that I remember is when I failed Algebra in freshman year. Math has always been my weakest subject. I never understood or could remember all the steps and rules needed in Math. It was nothing like memorizing vocabulary in Biology or reading a book and answering the questions in English. You can’t do that in Math because unlike the other subjects, Math questions and answers are never the same. In English the “Lord of the Flies” will always be written by William Golding and in History...

...discussion assignment. In reflecting on how much technology has evolved over the years growing up, I learned that living without it would be difficult. However, learning about techno-stress was an interesting topic where we often rely on technology on a daily basis which causes our stress level to rise. As a result, we get too involved or “plugged-in” with technology that it can be over stimulating for us which can lead to dangerous situations. As much as technology has become so productive in our daily lives, I learned that taking a break from our computers and cell phones can be a good thing once in a while to decrease our stress levels. One aspect of week 4’s classroom resources that surprised me was the self-assessment quiz on the Math and English content. It’s a comprehension quiz to assess one’s ability’s to answer questions in...

...Math History Essay Math is a subject I enjoy doing. Every day when I come home from school, it is the very first thing I do. Math is by far my favorite subject. It is more exciting than memorizing facts or writing an essay. Math involves thinking and solving, and I like to think through and solve problems. Even though math is not my strongest suit, I still enjoy doing anything related to it. Interest in taking Pre-Cal began during my freshman year. Two years ago, I took Geometry and fell in love with it. I enjoyed everything from proofs to finding the area of a shape. I remember people complaining how difficult Geometry was and thinking the exact opposite. By the end of freshman year, I was sad that Geometry was coming to an end. However, I was informed that Pre-Cal is similar to Geometry and is offered my junior year. Ever since then, I could not wait for Algebra 2 to be over. I also decided to take this class because it will build the foundation needed for Calculus the following year. To be successful in Pre-Cal this year, I will try my best to spare time to review notes I took the day before. I will also spend time with a study group so I can get advice by my peers. Whenever I have unanswered questions and cannot contact a teacher, I can rely on my friends who can explain and guide me along the right answer. As a teacher, you can walk around the class when there is extra time to do homework to easily answer questions that I may have regarding the assignment. Each...

...Fixed and Growth Mind Sets As students growing up, we tend to get fixated on classes we like and dislike. The essay “The Perils and Promises of Praise,” by the author Carol S. Dweck explains that the mind has two different mind-sets. Those are fixed mind-set and growth mind-set, which explains the different ways we think about our intellectual abilities and how well we will do in our classes. A person with a growth mind-set believes that they are able to expand their intellectual ability by putting in effort (Dweck 7). People with this mind-set are willing to work hard and struggle with difficult tasks because in the end they will have completed that task and be successful (Dweck 12). A person with a fixed mind-set believes that they only have a certain amount of intellect, and that it cannot change (Dweck 6). When a person with the fixed mind-set is confronted with a difficult task, they usually give up or resort to cheating to pass (Dweck 10). Educators commonly believe that praising students' intelligence builds their confidence and motivation to learn (Dweck 9). After reviewing the differences between fixed mind-set and growth mind-set, I figured that reading and writing is the subject where I have a fixed mind-set, math class is the subject where I have a growth mind-set. Some people assume that intellectual ability is a fixed trait, that either they are smart or not so smart. When students become aware of the plasticity of the brain and being able to shape their intelligence...

...A Treasure Hunt at Castle Rock using Pythagorean Quadratic June Tye-Patterson Math 221: Introduction to Algebra Instructor: Shenita Talton 07-13-2014 A Treasure Hunt at Castle Rock using Pythagorean Quadratic For this week assignment we are given a word problem and the use of the Pythagorean Theorem to solve it. We will be helping Ahmed and Vanessa, who both have a half of a map, find buried treasure in the desert somewhere around a place named Castle Rock. Ahmed map says the treasure is 2x+6 paces from Castle rock, whereas, Vanessa map says in order to find the treasure, go to Castle Rock, walk x paces to the north and then walk 2x+4 paces to the east. In order to discover the location of the treasure, we need to factor down the three quadratic expressions by putting the measurements into the Pythagorean Theorem. The first thing we need to do is to write an equation by inserting the binomials into the Pythagorean Theorem, which also states that every right triangle with legs of length have the relationship of a^2+b^2=c^2 x^2+ (2x+4)^2=(2x+6)^2 The binomials into the Pythagorean Theorem. x^2(2x+4) (2x+4)=(2x+6) (2x+6) The equation squared. x^2 4x+8x+8x+16=4x^2+12x+12x+36 Equation FOILED or distributed. x^2+4x^2=5x^2 First two terms added...

...A Mathematician’s Lament, by Paul Lockhart, is a mind revolving eye-opening piece on Lockhart’s extreme, yet makes logic, views on the mathematics education and curriculum in our educational system. An essay full of remarkable and strangely empowering critique about our mathematic education succeeds at motivating any future teachers to strive to make our math education curriculum better. This article critiques how we view mathematics as a culture, how teachers are “teaching” it (or not teaching it), why students are struggling and rejecting it, how parents in this society perceive it, and how testing students does not provide sufficient evidence that learning has taken place. This piece by Lockhart reinspires anyone (me in particular) and makes us realize that in fact math is an art like no other, and to have effective teachers, we need a greater understanding of the subject beyond the formulaic presentations we encounter from elementary to post high school education. Math is not about rules, it's not about arithmetic, it's not about notation. Math is about the search for beauty. The piece begins by a musician waking up from a terrible nightmare, where music education has been made mandatory both for music people and non-music people. "We are helping our students become more competitive in an increasingly sound-filled world. Educators, school systems, and the state are put in charge of this vital project. Studies are commissioned, committees are formed, and decisions are made--...

...7/29/12 UNIV103, Unit 2 IP Ghosts of Educations past Coming back to school after so long was daunting, but I could not have been happier for making the choice I have. In my first course I have been asked to complete an exercise called the MFL Path Builder. As I worked on this request I found I remembered much more than I thought I would, and forgotten just as much. There are three basic topics that include Writing, Reading, and Math. In high school I was very good at math, but I found I am just a little lacking in memory of all the rules math requires. Whereas I never excelled at English in high school; but was pleasantly surprised when I mastered 3 out of 4 modules in Reading. Oddly enough though in Writing, I completely tanked. After finding out just how much I have remembered and forgotten after so long, I find I am very anxious to get started on all the topic’s contained in each module. I started my IP by setting aside time to myself each night to focus on completing the MFL Path Builders. After completing the path builders for each topic I believe it did just what it should have done. It showed me just what I need to re-learn and catch up on. I feel that this tool was made to help new students that have been out of school for a long time; succeed in their education, and give us the same chances as those students who have just gotten out of other educational programs. I was pleasantly surprised buy the tool this program has given me and my chances to...
