Family/Living Situation – Koji Shannon Haskins, Jr. is a 23 year old unmarried Black male with two children. The children are the result of separate relationships. Mr. Haskins is the sole child born of the relationship between his mother and father, Johnnie Reese and Koji Haskins, Sr.
Mr. Haskins was born and raised in Milwaukee. Though he has a close relationship with his mother, he did not enjoy a stable relationship with his father and never lived with him full-time. Mr. Haskins says of his relationship with his father, “I know who he is, but he ain’t been around.” The senior Haskins has spent much of his adult life in correctional custody for various property crimes. During the limited time that the senior Haskins was in the community, both Ms. Reese and Mr. Haskins says that the senior Haskins was rarely available, was not supportive of mother or child, and was usually quickly returned to correctional custody. Ms. Reese shared that she was the victim of physical and emotional violence at the hands of the senior Haskins. She ended that relationship as she understood the toll it took on her and her son’s safety. When Ms. Reese found out, she asked for the girl to be placed elsewhere and soon gave up the foster care license altogether.
