Facebook

Facebook is the world’s largest social network, with more than 845 million active users around the world. It was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg in his dorm room at Harvard. Facebook grew from being an eccentric site for college students to a popular platform that is used to sell cars and movies, win over voters in presidential elections and organize protest movements. It offers advertisers a global platform, with the exception of China, where Facebook does not operate. For the collection of photographs of people after which it is named, users must register before using the site, after which they may create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common-interest user groups, organized by workplace, school or college, or other characteristics, and categorize their friends into lists such as “People from Work” or “Close Friends”. Facebook allows any users who declare themselves to be at least 13 years old to become registered users of the site. In April 2011, Facebook launched a new portal for marketers and creative agencies to help them develop brand promotions on Facebook. Today Facebook has been involved in campaigns for True Blood, American Idol, and Top Gear. News and media outlets such as the Washington Post, Financial Times and ABC News have used aggregated Facebook fan data to create various info-graphics and charts to accompany their articles. Facebook has affected the social life and activity of people in various ways. With its availability on many mobile devices, Facebook allows users to continuously stay in touch with friends, relatives and other acquaintances wherever they are in the world, as long as there is access to the Internet. It can also unite people with common interests and/or beliefs through groups and

Personal Experience: Nia's Role In The Bag

...This situation became a problem when the bag was in my possession, even before I got to Wassaja. Even though I forgot the alcohol was in my bag, by taking the bag out of my trunk, I became responsible and guilty of underage alcohol possession. Nia and I then walked into Wassaja. Her plan was to walk through to get to the other side quicker and proceed to her destination. I handed the bag to her before even going around the desk to clock in. She sat it down on the ledge, I clocked in, we chatted, them she disappeared for a few minutes (I assume she went to the bathroom). I continued to get settled at the desk like normal. She came back and not too long after, she left, accidentally leaving the bag behind. I did not even realize it until I went into my bag to get my computer. Once I saw the wine, I called Nia immediately. I believe it was twice, but she did not answer. I then called someone I knew was nearby and of age to come get it. However, not too long after their arrival, the senior desk clerk came in, came around the desk, and spotted it. After reflecting on the incident, I made note of the roles I played in the situation, as well as the many things I could have done differently. I identified my roles as a “Participant” role, as well as a “Negligent” role. I played a participant role because although the bag was not for me, I did at some point, have the bag. My intentions was to grab only my computer and charger out of the bag once I got to work, and Nia would take the bag...

Memorable Character

...Memorable Character He stood by the corner of the streets, seldomgazing into the distance. His dark flaky hair, roughand odorous suggested the fact he hadn’t had the satisfaction of a bath. His emeraldmilitary jacket; oncetartan green now faded to light grey, covered the untucked, split, and sweat-stained shirt which lay buried underneath. Filled with filth, the old pair of jeans he wore wascut in his knees and reposed four inches above his broad-brush ankles, uncovering the putrefaction that was deep within him. The greyness of everything that surrounded him gave the impression that the lingering shroud of darkness had consumed the sunlight, which once shone upon him that soon warred its way below the horizon of animaginary forest. The stillness in his eyes reminded me of the frozen souls who stood inanimately to the waning glare of the sun casting shadows of the figures of the deceased in a world only he knew of. A startlingly lissom, slender nose was above a distorted mouth with a smear of lines at the corners giving him the face of someone who smiled regularly, but his stiff jaw gave a portrait of a man who knew only one thing and that was failure. Looking deep into his eyes were two fiery balls with an intimidating nature. Hishair was like a grey ocean that swayed with the breeze of the wind. He had a mysterious aura about him, inflicting fear pheromones and perhaps even curiosity at first glance. He had vulgar eyes darker than the moon during an eclipse. My heart was beating...

Myrtle: A Short Story

...The women emerged from the kitchen to find Fortune seated on the couch, talking to someone who most definitely was no Carter LeBlanc. The young woman was about Fortune’s age, and appeared to be even less concerned than Fortune with matters of hair and makeup, if that were possible. She wore jeans and a clean t-shirt, and her straight brown hair was pulled back in a serviceable ponytail. “Oh, hello. I don’t know if you remember me.” The young lady stood and offered a firm handshake to Ida Belle, Gertie, and Mary-Alice in turn. “I’m Ainslee MacEntire. I work at the McCully Inn, over in Lemon Tree.” “Why, I believe I do remember you,” Gertie exclaimed. “Yeah. The situation with that guy from New Orleans. With the wife. You did such a good job I was hoping you could help me out.” “Well, you made a good decision to call the Sinful Ladies’ Detective Agency,” Gertie declared. “The what?” Ida Belle exclaimed. “How did you find us?” Fortune asked quickly. “I remembered you said you were from Sinful. I called the sheriff’s department here and talked to someone named Myrtle. She knew all about you.” “Myrtle gave you my information over the phone?” Fortune exclaimed. “I think I’ll have to have a chat with her.” “Oh, no, nothing like that,” Ainslee assured Fortune. “She said the women I’m looking for might be here, or you might not, but if I really wanted to know, I’d get myself over to the General Store and talk to someone named Walter, and he’d decide whether he thought it was safe to...

Chicks Nd Rocky Roads

...Introduction Description of a prison The walls closed in. I could not escape the endless, darkened wait to freedom. Sat in the corner of the chilled room, I can see the sharp corners at each edge of the room. The walls, painted red many years ago, connecting each corner forming a perfectly shaped square room. The dull paint on each of the four walls carries a burden memories where psychotic men drawing closer and closer to their death had been scratching at the walls. Looking up from the corner of the cell, my light flickers as many moths flutter around it finding the only hope and light that is left in the prison. ...read more. Middle Each man would shiver in the darkness of their cell knowing that this evil man would lead them to their death when the time would come in the near future. Every hour of every day, on perfect timing, the shadows of the evil guard would seep the rusty bars of each cell in the zoo of madness. Every twelve hours of every day the bell of the old clock tower would ring twelve times driving average men closer to madness. Every twelve hours of every day the bell ringing would drive those men closer to wanting to add the speckles of blood on their cold stone floor. Looking around when darkness falls in the real world, a small crack in the wall shows life outside in freedom. ...read more. Conclusion All the prisoners know it is time for another to walk the mile. And soon after the unlucky prisoner leaving the smell of burning flesh fills the halls and...

Personal Narrative-Home

...THE CROSS house was twenty paces away and the proximity and sight of it made Gary Soneji's skin prickle. It was Victorian-style, white shingled, and extremely well kept. As Soneji stared across Fifth Street, he slowly bared his teeth in a sneer that could have passed for a smile. This was perfect. He had come here to murder Alex Cross and his family. His eyes moved slowly from window to window, taking in everything from the crisp, white lace curtains to Cross's old piano on the sunporch, to a Batman and Robin kite stuck in the rain gutter of the roof Damon's kite, he thought. On two occasions he caught sight of Cross's elderly grandmother as she shuffled past one of the downstairs windows. Nana Mama's long, purposeless life would soon be at an end. That made him feel so much better. Enjoy every moment–stop and smell the roses, Soneji reminded himself. Taste the roses, eat Alex Cross's roses–powers, stems, and thorns. He finally moved across Fifth Street, being careful to stay in the shadows. Then he disappeared into the thick yews and forsythia bushes that ran like sentries alongside the front of the house. He carefully made his way to a whitewashed cellar door, which was to one side of the porch, just off the kitchen. It had a Master padlock, but he had the door open in seconds. He was inside the Cross house! He was in the cellar: The cellar was a clue for those who collected them. The cellar was worth a thousand words. A thousand forensic pictures, too. It was important...

How to Make a Tie Blanket

...example - since I wanted my friend's blanket three yards, I ended up with six yards of material total, because three yards of one design and three yards of another. You start out by laying the fleece down on a surface large enough for the fabric to be flat all of the way around with enough room for you to squeeze in to cut. Make sure the pieces are lined up one on top of the other. If one piece of fleece is longer than the other, simply trim the extra material off. Once the fabric is flat, start at one corner of the fleece. From the edge of the corner, go down three inches. At that spot, cut into the blanket three inches. Go back to the edge of the corner and do the same on the other side. You now have an inverted corner and a square piece of fabric that you can either put into your scrap pile or throw away. Do this to all four corners. Next, simply cut three inches into the blanket every one inch. Do this around the whole thing but do not cut the inverted corners, just ignore them. It will look like fringe when your done. All that is left now is to double knot the strips together! It is just like the first step in tying your shoe - hold one strip in each hand, cross them one over...

My Town

...swinging night life. The Village is a hotspot was a hotspot for the young and idle, sitting on street corners until the wee hours of the morning is a norm. The Village is made up of ten streets running east to west and three running north to South. On many of these street corners, venders can be found selling from fruits, snacks, bread or cigarette. Whenever mum needed groceries we rarely went to the supermarket, we would climb onto our bicycles, and off we went, destined for the Kitty market. The market was located on the main road, it’s name Alexander Street. Alexander street ran from north to south, from the seawall to the Police Station and is about 0.75 of a mile long. All the action happens on Alexander Street, not in any of the access roads or the ally ways, but on Alexander Street. In the afternoon, after schools are out school children would line the pavements, although they were no schools on Alexander Street, kids from the neighboring school districts like Thomas lands or Campbellville would walk over to kitty, which wasn’t too far. They would stand on Alexander Street and wait on the more entertaining mini busses, to take them to their destinations. After four (4pm) the streets would be almost life less, the kids were either home or at after school classes. At about five (5pm) the streets were alive again, with the kid’s from after school lessons were out on the corner waiting for buses and the kids that lived in kitty had...

Two Can Keep a Secret

...“There is a house in New Orleans, they called the Rising Sun. It’s been the ruin of many poor girls, and God I know I’m one.” My once beautiful and elegant mansion had become a land of a fiery hell, burned by its very own flames. I was a wicked woman but I never considered myself a crazy woman. I always knew that I was very intrigued by the anatomy of a human at a very young age, specifically at the time that I accidentally cut my finger in the kitchen. As soon as the drop of blood oozed out from the tip of my finger, I was mesmerized. Looking back now, I knew that I had to do what I had to do. I couldn’t tell anybody. Hell, keeping it a secret was probably the best decision for me and daughters. I loved my daughters, and I was wrong to have gone down such a terrible road that lead them to their misfortune. They could have been fine ladies of New Orleans, but my mistakes have lead us to flee to Paris, where we are living in quiet and obscurity. However, I’ll never forget the first time that I started my secret little hobby. As I grew up to be a fine lady of New Orleans myself, I had never looked back at my little fascination I had as a little girl. I had gone to the market that Sunday morning to bring back a nice chicken for dinner. I had told Abigail to prepare some chicken pot pie for dinner and I wanted a fresh chicken. I normally don’t go to the market myself but I had wanted Abigail to start on the pie early and it was such a beautiful day outside so I figured, why not...

Dangerous Corner

...Dangerous Corner J.B. Priestley is one of the outstanding English authors of his time. His Time Plays brought him world fame. He was the first one who used time tricks and flashback in his works, which made the break in the means of development of the character. Characters of his plays appear in a new light before our eyes, and the time trick allows us to see them in a new, deeper level. The extract under analysis is taken from the play “Dangerous corner”. According to its title we can guess that the play describes some dangerous situation, it implies that “dangerous corner” is a dead end, a difficult situation, which has no way out, like “to be in a tight corner”. However, to my mind there can be one more interpretation of the title: “corner” – like a turning point in one’s life – some people have courage to turn around it, to face all the difficulties and danger and cope with them, but others haven’t, they are afraid to lose their illusions, to lose the aim of the life. So we can see that the play deals with mental topic. The situation described in the play deals with the state of affairs in the family of Caplans. From the beginning of the extract we can see the development of two sub-plots: wireless play, and the situation on the foreground, which are mixed. The wireless play is called “The Sleeping Dog”. As the characters explain, the sleeping dog is the truth, which you shouldn’t disturb. But not all characters agree with this statement. Robert Caplan starts investigating...
