Acidophiles thrive in environments with low pHs. To survive the acidophiles regulate their internal environment by secreting buffers to keep it neutral. The opposite of acidophiles are alkaliphiles. Alkaliphiles live in high pH environments,above 9, usually between 10 and 12 (Horikoshi, 1999). Alkaliphiles play a large role in industry as detergent. According to Horikoshi, The current proportion of total world enzyme production destined for the laundry detergent market exceeds 60%, making alkaliphiles very useful for humans (1999). Enzymes created by the extremophiles are “versatile tools for sustainable developments in a variety of industrial applications, as they show important environmental benefits due to their biodegradability, specific stability under extreme conditions, improved use of raw materials and decreased amount of waste products” (De Champdoré, 2007). Switching from producing artificial chemicals to something created naturally can allow for more eco-friendly and ethical industry. Particularly the major oil spills in last few decades, and resulting loss to biodiversity has brought public attention to this problem. Bioremediation is a promising approach for recovery of environmental sites contaminated with crude oil and other hydrocarbons. Many microorganisms have been identified to possess hydrocarbon degradation potential. This review covers an overview of common hydrocarbon pollutants, microbes known as hydrocarbon degraders, major pathways and enzymes involved therein, factors affecting hydrocarbon degradation, and various approaches employed to exploit degrading capacity of microbes for remedial purpose. In addition to making use of inherent catabolic ability of degrader populations, metabolic engineering can be of considerable value in dealing with the problem of hydrocarbon contamination.
