...Module 9 Intercorporate Entities DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Q9-1. (a) Trading securities are reported at their fair value in the balance sheet. (b) Available-for-sale securities are reported at their fair value in the balance sheet. (c) Held-to-maturity securities are reported at their amortized cost in the balance sheet. For marketable securities, fair value and market value are usually synonymous. Thus, trading and available-for-sale securities are recorded on the balance sheet at market value. Q9-2. An unrealized holding gain (loss) is an increase (decrease) in the fair value of an investment security that is still owned. Q9-3. Unrealized holding gains and losses related to trading securities are reported in the current-year income statement (which flows to retained earnings). Unrealized holding gains and losses related to available-for-sale securities are reported as part of a separate component of stockholders' equity called Accumulated Other Comprehensive Income (AOCI). Q9-4. Significant influence gives the owner of the stock the ability to significantly influence the operating and financing activities of the company whose stock is owned. Normally, a 20% through 50% ownership of the company's voting stock provides evidence of significant influence. The equity method is used to account for investments with significant influence. Such an investment is initially recorded at cost; the investment is increased by the proportionate share of the...

...function properly that the body is well hydrated. The amount of water that the body needs can be affected by several things. The environment, the things we consume in what we eat and drink, and the amount of activity all play a major part in the water requirements our body needs. Water is the lifeline that our body needs to run. Proper hydration helps in the control of body temperature. Water also helps the body carry nutrients and oxygen to the cells throughout the body. It helps to remove waste from our bodies as well as to cushion joints, balance minerals and finally to maintain the proper fluid levels in the body. The levels of caffeine and alcohol that someone consumes can also greatly effect a persons hydration level. Studies done of caffeine show that blood flow to the kidneys increases. The study also shows that the body does not reabsorb calcium, magnesium, and sodium properly when larger amounts of caffeine are present. Caffeine will also increase the amount of blood that flows into the kidneys. The detrusor bladder muscles are stimulated and can cause the body to produce more urine output. While these things happen within the body when caffeine is present it would take large amounts of caffeine a day for it to affect the body in a noticeable way, usually around 6 cups of coffee or 10-12 cups of tea. Alcohol is far more impacting on the body. Alcohol is a diuretic which causes the body not to reabsorb water as well as increases the urine output of the...

...relationship they create with the employee. When an organization, such as Amazon, has a great recruiting process, they are capable of eliminating many negative aspects such as a high turn-over rate, negative customer service, unhappy employees, and so forth. A Customer Service Manager within Amazon has obligations to ensure that the organization and its employees are providing their customers with the best possible customer service, whether it’s when a customer is making a purchase, has questions concerning a product or purchase, has complications with a product, is unhappy with service they received from Amazon, etc. Due to this, it’s extremely important that Amazon has Customer Service Managers that are educated within their position, as well as dedicated to the organization, their customers, and their employees. With recent changes to the organization, Amazon has decided to bring aboard 2,000 more Customer Service Managers (Isidore C. 2013), who will assist Amazon in maintaining their positive reputation as one of the largest on-line retail stores. ...Enterprise Resource Planning Factors Affecting Success and Failure Patricia Barton November 25, 2001 Table of Contents Introduction Factors Contributing to Failure ERP Success Stories Conclusion References Introduction What is Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)? “Enterprise Resource Planning” is a term originally coined in 1990 by The Gartner Group to describe the next generation of MRP II software. The purpose was to integrate all facets of the business enterprise under one suite of software applications. The definition of ERP would be broadened to include almost any type of large integrated software package.[i][1] Webopedia provides a generalized definition of ERP as “a business management system that integrates all facets of the business, including planning, manufacturing, sales, and marketing.”[ii][2][iii] Some of the more well-known ERP software developers include SAP, Oracle, and PeopleSoft. This paper will look at both successful and unsuccessful ERP implementations and what contributed to their success or failure. Many lessons have been learned by failed ERP projects, as evidenced by the volume of information available. Many of the failures occurred in 1999, in an attempt to manage Y2K issues, which may suggest that the companies had pressing needs which forced the implementation. Apparently, late adopters are benefiting from the mistakes of their predecessors since the most current research describes successful implementations. What constitutes...

...From A Passage to Africa George Alagiah writes about his experiences as a television reporter during the war in Somalia, Africa in the 1990s. He won a special award for his report on the incidents described in this passage. I saw a thousand hungry, lean, scared and betrayed faces as I criss-crossed Somalia between the end of 1991 and December 1992, but there is one I will never forget. I was in a little hamlet just outside Gufgaduud, a village in the back of beyond, a place the aid agencies had yet to reach. In my notebook I had jotted down instructions on how to get there. ‘Take the Badale Road for a few kilometres till the end of the tarmac, turn right on to a dirt track, stay on it for about forty-five minutes — Gufgaduud. Go another fifteen minutes approx. — like a ghost village.’ … In the ghoulish manner of journalists on the hunt for the most striking pictures, my cameraman … and I tramped from one hut to another. What might have appalled us when we'd started our trip just a few days before no longer impressed us much. The search for the shocking is like the craving for a drug: you require heavier and more frequent doses the longer you're at it. Pictures that stun the editors one day are written off as the same old stuff the next. This sounds callous, but it is just a fact of life. It's how we collect and compile the images that so move people in the comfort of their sitting rooms back home. There was Amina Abdirahman, who had gone out that morning in search of wild, edible...

...Development of Football in England The idea of football came from the medieval game that was known as mob football which included two villages that would play with a pigs head. The game had no rules which meant that violence was a large part of the game and they would play until people were dying or until people were running away. Balls were not invented so the people would use a pigs head and kick that around. King Edward II was the person to ban the game as it created too much violence within the people of the country. 1581 is the earliest account of football as an organised sport. It was played between elite schools such as Eton and colleges such as Cambridge and Oxford. Sides, positions, referees were introduced. The game was played on just and average field like what farm animals would be on and they would use the gates as a goal. 1848 – Cambridge Rules This club shall be called the University Foot Ball Club. At the commencement of the play, the ball shall be kicked off from the middle of the ground: after every goal there shall be a kick-off in the same way. After a goal, the losing side shall kick off; the sides changing goals, unless a previous arrangement be made to the contrary. The ball is out when it has passed the line of the flag-posts on either side of the ground, in which case it shall be thrown in straight. The ball is behind when it has passed the goal on either side of it. When the ball is behind it shall be brought forward at the place where it left...

Among the assets contributing to this growth were excellent harbor facilities and the fortunate location for trade with the West Indies. In addition, the vines of St. Emilion, the Medoc, Langon, and surrounding regions produced vintages for which there was great demand. The familles de commerce established large estates and, later in the century, diversified their holdings by investing in the incipient industries of the southwest region. While this practice seemed to be a reasoned hedge against commercially...

...1.1 Prepare documentation to select and recruit a new member of staff. Job Requisition Form Job requisition forms are for employees who have resigned and/or terminated. Although, job requisition forms can also be used by the department supervisors who want to hire additional staff to the organisation (Work - Chron.com, 2015). The forms are customarily handed over to the human resources department in order for the requisition form to be handled by the recruiter. The recruiter will then have the responsibility of placing job postings based on the requisition and discussions with the hiring manager or department supervisor. With this, job requisition forms are primarily followed for work force planning and staffing actions in an organisation. Job Description Job descriptions are written statements that obtain a thorough analysis and understanding as what the job seeks for. This means that job descriptions are duties, responsibilities, skills, competencies and more. Organisations also place the working conditions, outcomes needed from that positions and required qualifications for candidates who consider taking on the job positions. The best job descriptions for individuals to look for are those that are updated where responsibilities change. Hence, the employees are not limited which would enhance their experience and grown their skills and ability to contribute the organisation more in the future.
