Imagine yourself waking up into other life, the Yoruban life. For the past two weeks I have been researching the Yoruba Culture. I want you to put yourself in their shoes. I pick the Yoruba Culture because I thought it was interesting and something like the culture we our reading about in “All Things Fall Apart”. I’m going to tell you some information on their history, religion, society, and marriage life.
The Yoruba people have a population 42 million people, they are an ethnic group of Southwestern and North Central Nigeria. Half of the Yoruba people speak the Yoruba language. During the 7th century the African People whom lived in Yoruba were not initially known as the Yoruba although they both shared a common ethnic group and language. The Yoruba Families Article state “In marriages in modern Yoruba society the modernized Yorda cling firm to this outer form as a proof of loyalty to the original culture.” So that’s meaning that by them getting married is showing their loyalty they have for each other. Another article on pulse.ng tells me alot of information on what goes on throughout the weeding. Through the ceremony they play rich Nigerian music. Everyone that attend the ceremony show off their best outfits, handbags and etc. When they have children the child will be born into the home, which is apart of a compound or a clan. With their children they favor the males because of the biological, social role.
