In a society it is essential that we recognize how fear can be used as a tool, as demonstrated in Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies. In the book, a group of boys are deserted on an uninhabited island, in which a new society rises and then crumbles through the means of savagery. The Lord of the Flies presents an allegory which warn us that people will use fear as a means to gain power, destroy any attempts of reason, and bring society into a perpetual state of chaos.

In Lord of the Flies Golding illustrates this concept through the character of Piggy who is seen as the voice of reason on the island. “Only decided Ralph as he faced the chief’s seat, I can’t think. Not like Piggy. Once more Ralph had to adjust his values He go step by step inside that fat head of his, only Piggy was no chief. But Piggy, for all of his ludicrous body, had brains,” (Golding, 78). When Piggy, although afraid of Jack, gets in front of his agenda it ultimately drives Piggy to his own demise. Similarly Hitler knew the power of reason and wished to crush any opposition. “ Nazi ideologues linked communists, capitalists, and liberals with the purported Jewish conspiracy; they described homosexuals, Eastern Europeans, the British, and the Americans as nothing but cover groups for alleged Jewish interests,” (Dinsmore). Both sources display that when under oppressive rule any opposition with the general consensus will lead to being singled out and be accused with destructive “interests” and will be seen as a threat to society.
