...part of it. “He had difficulty keeping his attention on the war […] but then he would slip away into day dreams, just pretending, walking barefoot along the Jersey Shore” (p.279). This quote clearly shows that he was living in a parallel world between the war that he was living at that moment and his obsessed love for Martha. During the war Jimmy Cross had two obsessions with his love back home Martha. The first obsession that Jimmy shows is that he thinks all the time that “she was a virgin, he [and that he] was almost sure.” (p.274). Another quote that can be used as an example is how he describes her from a photo that she sent him as a souvenir “Her legs, he thought, were almost certainly the legs of a virgin, dry and without hair, the left knee cocked and carrying her entire weight” (p.276). Even though he was not sure of her virginity, he liked thinking that she was one. The second obsession that he shows throughout the short story is that he thinks almost all the time about her “He remembered kissing her good night at the dorm door. […] He should have carried her up the stairs to her room and tied her to the bed and touched that left knee all night long.” (p.276) Jimmy Cross is wracked with guilt because he believes that his preoccupations for his love for Martha blinded his judgment causing the death of Ted Lavender, member of Alpha Company. “He pictured Martha’s smooth young face, thinking he loved her more than anything, more than his men, and now Ted Lavender...

...It was hot as hell outside when I ran down the three steps of my front porch. My dad was yelling and jumping around like he was being stung by a hundred bees, when actually he was. “Chelsea, go get your brother, Spray me with the hose!” As I ran into the house to get my brother, I see him running my way. “What’s wrong, what’s wrong?” he repeats. The crazy thing about the whole situation is my dad is extremely allergic to bees. But nothing would come out my mouth. I turn to run back out the house, fall, scrap my knee, but I still manage to get to the water hose. My brother stands at the top of the steps with his mouth wide open. “Don’t just stand there Jonathan, Help!” He runs over and tries to take my fathers shirt off as I spray him with water. In the mist of trying to help my dad, the bees turn on my brother. Now instead of just spraying my dad I’m now spraying him and my brother. At the time millions of thoughts are running through my twelve year old brain. “What if he faint and doesn’t wake up, What if I can’t find his EpiPen.” Dear God please help me. King 2 My brother manages to get the bees off him and get my dads shirt off. Now thirty minutes into the mass chaos, my father finally stops screaming and tells us he doesn’t believe there are any more bees. I drop the water hose and look at the ground, there looks to be more then a hundred bees on the ground. I quickly remember that I should go look for my dads EpiPen. After rummaging through his dresser for...

...Prepared for Dr. X Eng. 101 Final draft # 1 “Historical depictions of Native Americans in Main Stream Hollywood” As a child growing up on the reservation, my brothers and I grew up watching western movies being that my father was an enormous John Wayne fan. Not knowing the racial implications that were being put into effect in those movies. I remember us playing cowboys and Indians and I always wanted to be on the cowboys side because whoever was on the Indians side was always going to lose just as they did in the movies. It wasn’t till recently that I looked at those pictures in a different point view a different lens if you would say. Native Americans still to this day are depicted as negative stereotypes through main stream media. Films such as Windtalkers, Flags of our Fathers, The new World, and Bury my heart at wounded Knee show how Hollywood movies still depicts the stereotypes that Native Americans are still inferior, Savages, people needing a White Savior to progress in the word. The first way Hollywood stereotypes Native Americans is portraying them as inferior to whites. For example in the movie Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee the scene where the senetors and congress men are determining what to do with the indigenous peoples land. Without having any insight of the Native Americans. It isn’t until later in the movie when they get a native man to cosign on the plans they have set out to put the Sioux tribe on reservations that are divided and sold to white Americans...

...How to Park Anywhere in Ottawa for Less than a Buck a Day Tired of ridiculous parking fees? Need to stretch you’re budget further? Can’t find an ideal parking spot? Read on. There’s a little known loophole in Ottawa Municipal Bylaws. Here is what the legislation says: (from website) (insert translation: In Ontario, drivers can renew their license either annually or bi-annually, but first must settle any outstanding tickets. Since the city caps the delinquent fine at $400, a driver can theoretically rack up unlimited tickets for no extra cost. Let me explain the loophole. Although it’s true that the city can issue an infinite number of parking tickets, the city defers collection of overdue and outstanding tickets to Service Ontario. As shown above, Service Ontario implements a per delinquent cap set at $400 every two years. Theoretically, a driver can accumulate an unlimited number of parking tickets and only pay the maximum fine. Unlimited tickets for $400 every two years? More like $400 for a two year parking pass. Seriously, you can park in any eligible parking space any time you want for $400 every two years. I call this the Ultimate V.I.P Parking Plan tm. This program obviously excludes: handicap and emergency services parking, plus no-parking and toe-away zones. However, the rest of the city might as well be your own fucking driveway. Let’s look at how much money you’ll save. Below are the accumulated parking fees over two years for the largest parking...

For the last 339 days, I have been working really hard at turning my life into something that is my idea of what it is to be a successful, happy, consistently growing woman. I am going to school and pursuing a dream to have a degree. I have my family in my life. I have gained their trust and feel their pride when they hear about what I am doing just in my daily life. Never mind the whole of all that I have done. I have an amazing, loving relationship with a woman who supports me in what I am doing in ALL areas of my life. She accepts me for all of my light and all of my dark and without hesitation or judgment. With all the responsibility, I took on with going back to school and getting into an intimate relationship, I neglected the biggest and what should be my most important responsibility; my recovery. I stopped going to meetings on a regular basis. I have not been doing my step-work, as I should be. Moreover, I didn’t reach out the moment I knew I was in trouble. I believe that this happened for the very reason of showing me my priorities were not in line. I thought I was doing okay. ...Character Essay “Almost Perfect” The Novel Almost Perfect written by Brian Katcher describes a character with many different thoughts. The main character of this novel is Logan. Logan is a guy in high school and soon to be a graduate. It’s his senior year in high school and he’s been going through some tough times because of a girl that broke up with him but thanks to his best friends Jack and Tim he’s almost done with her. The qualities I’m going to define with the novel are emotional, physical, and social. These three qualities all end up relating to each other. Logan shows, well more like describes, his feelings towards his ex-girlfriend Brenda that broke his heart. They had been dating for 3 whole years; well throughout their whole high school years and she had never given it up to him. She decided to end a relationship that was worth more than a one night stand and she cheated on Logan with a college guy. The book states how long he’s been trying to get over her, “For the past month I’d been trying to fix myself up.” He then follows up with something she had said while they were dating, “Logan, I’m just not ready for that. Could we wait a little longer? Think about how special it will be.” Brenda never was able to give it up to Logan and that’s that they had been dating for almost 4 years. Logan describes the emotional affect he had with Brenda when trying to still forget about her. This shows how his emotions are breaking him down because of a break up. That describes...

...know (or think they know) and can answer with confidence. Others, like me, have no idea and are constantly bouncing around ideas, never settling. The title “Life Almost Straight” relates to, as teenagers and young adults, how we are nearing the beginnings of our lives and are figuring out how we are going to shape the rest of our lives. Teenagers often have a sort of innocent view of the world, especially before social media. Before we stayed informed of everything going on in the world, we had no idea of all the terrible things happening every day. This is a lot like Charlie Brown in the Peanuts cartoon. He believes that, even though Lucy has shown her true colors many many times, this will be the time that she actually holds the ball still. Charlie Brown has figured out how he thinks life is. He believes that there is good in everything and everyone. While some people may feel the same, others may feel the opposite....

...The Man Who Was Almost a Man President Abraham Lincoln signed the Proclamation Emancipation. This document gave slaves their freedom. Sharecropping was also called tenant farming. Blacks viewed this as the only opportunity to become self-sufficient. Knowing that slaves had nowhere to go and all they knew was farming or domestic work; through this system, the landowner still exercised a great degree of power, illustrated by the terms of a contract. Some plantation owners took advantage of majority of the black population, because they could not read, write or count. The plantation owners needed them to keep maintaining the fields and crops. The owners would over charge them for equipment, tools, and even rent if they lived on the land. As the most common farming arrangement, former slaves did not receive payment until the crops were harvested and turned into the landowner. In return, they would be paid, but not equally. They were typically given a portion of the crops instead of money. Many times they were told or cohered into signing a contract with the plantation owners saying they must pay back any advances received, cost of tools, and rent. Richard Wright’s short story “A Man Who Was Almost a Man” from the book of Eight Men clearly illustrate the continuous enslavement by means of sharecropping. A young boy named Dave decides the time has come for him to be a “Man”. Therefore, he makes an adult decision to purchase a gun. After purchasing a revolver he makes a series of...

...The Day the World Almost Came To An End - Literature Notes Picture Pearl Crayton is a graduate of the University of the Pacific. She was born on September 26, 1932 and died on May 22, 2010. She published ten short stories, one of which is 'The Day the World Almost Came to An End'. http://www.writers.net/writers/57061 http://www.thetowntalk.com/article/20100530/OBITUARIES/100529001/Pearl-Garrett-Crayton?nclick_check=1 SUMMARY This short story was told from the perspective of an adult and chronicles the events behind a child’s (the adult narrator) belief that the world was about to end. The story is set on a plantation in Louisiana in 1936, where the church was the axis around which plantation life revolved. Despite this fact, the narrator was holding on to being a sinner because she believed that she could not ‘live upright’. One day, while she was playing, her cousin Rena informed her that the world was coming to an end. This was based on a conversation that Rena overheard, and misunderstood, about the eclipse. The hellfire sermons in church did not help to stem the narrator's mounting panic and she worried herself into a frazzle as a result. She had a conversation with her father about this issue and he tried to quell her fears, but unfortunately, he only managed to increase it with his statement that the world could come to an end at any time. The narrator spent the night conjuring images of dooms day, which led to her overreaction to hearing the rumblings of an old...
