This article, regardless of how short it was, in a way opened my eyes some to more of the world. As I read through it I saw that mixed individuals can sometimes have a very hard and stressful life. They are theoretically split in half by the cultures their parents came from and the things that come from both of those cultures. In the story, the author comes from an American background and a Latino background. She struggles with these contradicting cultures for most of her life. At times she starts to hate how she looks and despises the Latino side of her, all because it gives her a curvy body instead of a thin one more often seen in American culture. She would be catcalled and often times she would not feel comfortable around men from her culture from the way they looked at it. …show more content…
At one point in the story, the author talks about people making fun of her hips and how it makes her feel. She says, “In these situations, I am sad. I drive home and examine my hips in the mirror, hit them sometimes for being so imprudent, and like great big ears on the side of my body”(93). This is the sad reality of how people treat others for being even slightly different. However, she later returns to being confident about her figure and tries her hardest to turn away naysayers, thankfully. In a way, this story also shows to me a glimpse into the life of a female and if I was in a women’s shoes I would not know how to handle myself. It is discouraging to see how some individuals will treat the opposite sex as if they were just objects to the world. That time period should have past ninety-six years ago when women obtained equal

A Tale of Two Vices

...A Tale of Two Vices The purpose of this paper is to provide a written critique of a research article written by John Rolfe entitled “A Tale of Two Vices: An Applied Economic Analysis of Alcohol and Tobacco Consumption.” In this paper I will offer a detailed analysis of the dependent and independent variables used in the study and I will offer an objective viewpoint on the effectiveness of the sampling methods used and the reliability of the study. The author begins his article by describing and defining his purpose for the research project. As a college student he moved from the Netherlands to the United States to study at the University of New Hampshire. The differences in tobacco and alcohol use from Europe to America surprised Rolfe. In beginning his research he found a statistic indicating that “Europe is the heaviest alcohol consumer region worldwide, with alcohol consumption per person over twice the average” (Alcohol Statistics in Europe, 2007 para 6). Europe ranks number one with the amount of alcohol consumed (Alcohol Statistics in Europe, 2007 para 6). The author decided to design a study to investigate the factors that influence alcohol and tobacco consumption across many countries. For the experiment, he used data from 63 different countries. To have accurate results the researcher should have separated the countries and compared them. The author began by conducting base research in academic journals. He learned that, “a country’s unemployment rate,...

...Book Review Name: Institution: Course: Date: Book Review In the article, Bowling alone, Putnam examines the culture of the modern Americans and the good life that has been eroded off the society. He points out that America has a nostalgic feeling which the people of America have not understood the context. The feeling is one that a person feels that there is something wrong within the American society. One yearns to go back to the ancient times when people care for themselves and others, where there was no crime and everyone was happy. He argues out that, such issues are important in the transformation of the modern society to one that is socially, economically moralistically and politically at peace with the people’s intrinsic perception of a collective utopia. Putman points out that the current trends in the social capital and civic engagement have been wiped out to a critical level. He explains that the modern society has become a cesspool of crime, immorality, inequality and utmost poverty among the American people. He goes further to relate the deviation of the social capital to the earlier mentioned ill activities in the society, while he associates the social capital increase to the some positive aspects like economic prosperity, education, democracy, children welfare, productive neighborhoods, safe welfare, proper healthcare and happiness to the people. The evidence that Putman mounts is unquestionable with regards to correlation, and he cautions that even mere...

Bowling Alone

...Critical Analysis of Bowling Alone Bowling Alone defends a thesis that in the 1960’s and 70’s, something occurred in the US that caused a change. In the 20th century for the majority of the time, American were greatly involved within their community. However, since Americans started to pull away from one another and their community, the “community vitality” weakened. Putnam uses bowling as an illustration for his claim. By using statistics and charts, Putnam compares the participation of individuals in bowling to those who actually are in league bowling; the percentage declining by 40% while bowlers themselves increased by 10. The concept of “bowling alone” is not a literal term but comparatively speaking they are bowling along because informal groups, which are typical in most cases, can not replenish social capitol. Still Bowling Alone happened to fall under the original Bowling Alone 15th Anniversary and it revisits some civic disengagement as well as touches on the after 9/11 generation and compares their involvement in politics compared to their elders when they were their age. The newer generation was revived as far as its involvement in their community after tragedy struck the mainland as well as some presidency mile stones. Putnam discusses a threat to America due to the a growing gap between the youth which involved their self-esteem, family support, social trust civic and religious engagement; all of which threaten social mobility and cohesion. Within my community...

Aero Motors Case Study

... I have evaluated each of the two possible options to introducing GenMax’s subsidiary, Aero Motors to the North American Market. The first option is the go-it-alone strategy in which we will attempt to penetrate the market with our own brand. The second option is to partner with a local company which will minimize the risk and enable Aero Motors to leverage the partner’s infrastructure and favorable brand image. After much consideration, it is evident that there are advantages and disadvantages to each alternative. Below I have delineated each option based on the risks and rewards and as it relates to effective use of our brand followed my recommendations. Go-It-Alone: Risk and Reward This strategy can bring a lot of reward if the project is a success, because GenMax will be able to capture all the profits and other possible benefits such as newly earned brand recognition. Additionally, GenMax will be able to take advantage of the two years before the competitors can utilize the new technology allowing for greater profitability. Lastly, by utilizing a go-it-alone strategy, Aero Motors will enjoy the autonomy to make decisions without having to wait for the partner to agree or compromise. While those rewards appear to be favorable, there are also risks that should be considered. In utilizing the go-it-alone strategy one must take into account the limited or even non-existent brand perception Aero Motors and GenMax have in the North American market. It must be considered...

Starbucks

...I. Strategic Profile and Case Analysis Purpose Starbucks has always been the famous coffee shop in the world. When people smell coffee the first thing that came into their minds is “Starbucks”. Starbucks starts in 1971 in Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington. It wasn’t always about selling coffee drinks, before Howard Schultz was selling coffee beans and coffee machines not the coffee drink itself. Then for about 10 years he thought of a way of selling coffee since it became famous, with that he came up of opening a store named II Giornale. After a year, Jerry Baldwin, Zel Siegl and Gordon Bowker sell the name Starbucks to Schultz and quickly renamed II Giornale to Starbucks and started to expand across America. Now Starbucks has more than 11,000 stores in the United States alone and more than 17,000 stores around the world. Having so many stores, it became more available to the public. You can buy their coffee almost anywhere. With this kind of availability, the long lines where nowhere to be found. Coffee serving and production was fast. But having so many stores can make a huge impact. The convenience of the costumers was met, but the sales might make a huge loss. That is why the main purpose of this Case Study is to identify how having so many stores can make a huge impact on Starbucks’ demands and to prevent it from happening with making an action plan. Another purpose is to identify the latest perception of consumers that will make Starbucks innovate and focus on other...

Mlk Analysis

...Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech can be considered one of the greatest speeches in American history. Over 200,000 white and black Americans gathered in Washington D.C. on August 28, 1963 to hear Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. deliver this groundbreaking speech. This essay will analyze the speech for voice and rhetoric by showing King's main argument, how he supports that argument, identifying the language he used and the audience at whom it was directed. In addition, King argues that all men are equal and should be treated equal. Many times in his speech, King states how black citizens have been mistreated over the years. In the beginning of his speech King states "One hundred year later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination." King also states numerous times his dream for equality in the country. He says "I have a dream my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." However, King uses many historical documents to support his argument. The first document he mentions is the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order signed by President Lincoln freeing the slaves in the confederate states. It was the first step in equality for African-Americans. King also mentions the United States Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. He references these...

Analysis of Hell Heaven

...Analysis of Hell-Heaven Jhumpa Lahiri is an Indian American writer who has developed a way of writing that reflects off of events in her life and certain incidents she has endured throughout her time. Although Lahiri was not born in the heart of India, her parents passed down the passion of their culture due to spending a part of their lives in Bengali. The Bengali culture that was maintained as she grew up allowed her to apply her knowledge and experiences into her short stories. In “Hell-Heaven”, the Bengali culture played a prominent role throughout the whole story. This story had been told through the eyes of a woman who had been recollecting on her life as a young, growing girl. Lahiri chose to use the daughter as the narrator because it was easiest for her to see the dynamics between her parents and the newcomer. The newcomer is Pranab Chakraborty, a Bengali from Calcutta studying engineering at an institute in America. He ironically came across a woman who lived in America, shared the same Bengali culture as him and was also raised in Calcutta. To come across such a familiar thing in an unfamiliar, foreign country, allowed Pranab to feel as if he wasn’t alone and had someone to share his experiences with. Now knowing that Lahiri had parents from Bengali and she spent her years growing up in America, it is evident that her family’s culture is strongly reflected in the story “Hell-Heaven”. Living in America and having to assimilate to the American culture is easier...
