“ The plan was harder now, I had to find a way to get us both out now.”

I believe the author used this quote to show us Alva Jane’s determination to make things right the best way she could. It showed me that Alva Jane was so much more than just “keeping sweet” for the community but herself as well. It shows that she is a good person in the eyes of herself rather than in the community. That she wants only the best for herself and for sister Emily’s daughter as well. Alva took sister Cora’s daughter with her to Canada because she’s only 12 years old and they’re trying to marry her off to someone old enough to be her grandfather. The same way they had married her off to an abusive old man the age of her father. Alva wanted fairness for both
