Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose”(“Kevin Arnold”). Nevertheless, the memories are good or bad they are part of who we are no matter what it may be. But what if a person started to lost them? What if she doesn't even remember her family members, what if she doesn't even remember how to speak? Or imagine the person that she was yesterday can not even recognize it today. Even with the increase in the technology that we have, we could not bring back the memories that we lost. With the increase in the technologies, we increase in diseases connected with middle aged people. Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is one of the common diseases that is affecting middle-aged people. People are going to need help whether they are sick or if they are not. But most of all when they are sick, that is the most they are going to need help from the families the most and the person that is willing to take care of them. The ones that would now the change are the “Loved ones usually notice the problem once the affected person becomes taxed beyond his or her mental abilities”(Kuhn Daniel 21). With Alzheimer’s increasing there are more space and people that could help the people that are sick. “The number of people with neurodegenerative disorders associated with, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson's disease, is increasing rapidly as life expectancy in developed countries continues to rise”(Eliezer). ...Alzheimer’s Disease Alzheimer’s disease is relentlessly destroying the brains and lives of our nation’s older adults, robbing them of memory, the ability to reason, and affecting their emotions and behavior. Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative disorder of the brain. The longer we live the greater the risk: one out of every two Americans aged 85 and older and one out of every 10 aged 65 and older are afflicted with the disease. It affects two groups of people: those with the disease and the loved ones who care for them. By the year 2050, an estimated 14 million Americans will be in its grip (Medina xi, 2). Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease of the brain, which is characterized by a gradual loss of memory and other mental functions. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia-a general term referring to loss of memory and the ability to think, reason, function, and behave appropriately (Medina 4). The word dementia is derived from two Latin words, which mean away and mind, respectively (Goldmann 2). It’s different from the mild forgetfulness normally observed in older people. Over the course of the disease, people with AD no longer recognize themselves or much about the world around them (Medina 4). Alzheimer’s is marked by abnormal clumps, called senile plaques, and irregular knots, called neurofibrillary tangles, of brain cells. The plaque is an accumulation of an abnormal protein, amyloid. One theory regarding the cause of Alzheimer’s...

Short Term Memory Loss

...If a patient has short-term memory loss due to dementia, he or she will often have a family history of dementia. Short-term memory loss in the elderly is also caused or intensified by inactivity, depression, poor nutrition, dehydration, and lack of mental stimulation, all of which are common in the elderly. This short-term memory loss can progress slowly, rapidly, or stay the same. The most aggressive case that she has seen was an eighty year old woman who recently had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Within two months she had progressed from losing everyday objects to being unable to participate in conversations coherently. The entire year Shawna knew her, Shawna heard her say about three sentences that made sense. One day she looked at me and asked, “When should we knock him off?” She was referring to her husband. She didn’t even know he was her husband; however, for those few seconds, that well-formed thought made its way through all the tangles in her brain. At the end of the year she was bed-ridden and totally dependent on others to meet her...

Ageing

...Cognition across the Lifespan Week 7 Ageing Age is determined by the number of years or this is our Chronological Age, however if we want to know about what an individual is like, this is not a very reliable measure. This is because people of the same chronological age vary in their physical and mental state. People also tend to judge others by their Social Age. Or social behaviors that are acceptable at a certain chronological age. Therefore we do not expect grandparents to play on skateboards than we expect teenagers to walk around with sticks. So when does old age technically begin?? There is no proper age wherein a person just turns old in one day, but modern gerontologists suggests that it usually starts between the ages of 60-65. That’s when in majority of people there are significant if not dramatic changes in mental and physical functioning. Again it is important to stress that 1. There is no single point at which a person automatically becomes old and 2. Chronological age is in any case an essentially arbitrary measure. Ageing and Stereotypes The term “ageism” was coined by Robert Butler, M.D., in 1968. Dr. Butler is a geriatrician who saw that society had developed myths, stereotypes and misunderstandings about people as they age. Graham Mulley in 2006 stated that the negative images of ageing (both historical and contemporary) have resulted in misconceptions which have influenced how we think, speak and behave. Evolution of these stereotypes according to Mulley: ...

...Chapter 1 – Study Questions: 1. What are the four key features of the lifespan perspective as identified by Paul Baltes. Provide original examples for each feature. (pp. 4-5) Paul Baltes identified 4 features of the life-span perspective: 1. Multidirectionality: development involves both growth and decline – as people grow in one area they may lose in another and this may occur at different rates Ex: (Book): people’s vocabulary abilities tends to increase throughout life, but reaction time tends to slow down. Ex: (original): Language acquisition. At a young age children are able to learn multiple languages very quickly. However, as they get older, their ability to learn multiple languages quickly becomes more difficult. Social situations. At a young age children are not able to understand complex social situations such as parents fighting or divorce or financial problems between their parents. As they grow up and age, they begin to understand these social situations and deal with them. They may comfort a parent through a hard time, or go get a job to help with the financial situation. 2. Plasticity: One’s capacity is not predetermined or set in concrete. Many skills can be trained or improved with practice, even late in life. There are limits to the degree of potential improvement Ex: (original): Your IQ is not predetermined. You’re ability to play a sport is not predetermined. Household Dog

...opposed to the word "bitch" which refers to the female of the species. MtDNA evidence shows an evolutionary split between the modern dog's lineage and the modern wolf's lineage around 100,000 years ago but, as of 2013, the oldest fossil specimens genetically linked to the modern dog's lineage date to approximately 33,000–36,000 years ago.[4][6] Dogs' value to early human hunter-gatherers led to them quickly becoming ubiquitous across world cultures. Dogs perform many roles for people, such as hunting, herding, pulling loads, protection, assisting police and military, companionship, and, more recently, aiding handicapped individuals. This impact on human society has given them the nickname "man's best friend" in the Western world. In some cultures, however, dogs are also a source of meat.[7][8] In 2001, there were estimated to be 400 million dogs in the world.[9] Most breeds of dogs are at most a few hundred years old, having been artificially selected for particular morphologies and behaviors by people for specific functional roles. Through this selective breeding, the dog has developed into hundreds of varied breeds, and shows more behavioral and morphological variation than any other land mammal.[10] For example, height measured to the withers ranges from 15.2 centimetres (6.0 in) in the Chihuahua to about 76 cm (30 in) in the Irish Wolfhound; color varies from white through grays (usually called "blue") to black, and...
