When searching for something we neglect to see the things occurring around us. We invest all of our hope and complete servitude to this idea in order to find it. Although many of us head unto a path of enlightenment there is always one thing that can taint our ambition and easily lead us onto a different path. This one thing that is so great and powerful comes from inside of us. This powerful force is desire. In the novel Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha was on a path to find Nirvana, he showed discipline and ambition by fasting for days and adapting his body to withstand all kinds of weather. He questioned all of his ways of seeking nirvana. His detachment from gaining or losing money made it easier for him to takes risk where he could lose a lot of money yet gain a lot as well. “This Brahmin, “he said to a friend…But he has the secret of those people whom success comes by itself of those people whom success comes by itself, whether it is magic, or whether he has learned it from the Samanas. He always seems to be playing at business, it never makes much impression on him, it never masters him, he never fears failure, he is never worried about a loss.” He looked down at the world, he had no desire to become bothered by losing money. Eventually he became conquered by the emotions he once looked down on. “For a long time Siddhartha had lived the life of the world without belonging to it. His senses which he had deadened during his ardent Samana years, were again awakened. He had tasted riches, passion, and power, but for a long time he remained a Samana in his heart” (pg. 75) His sudden hunger for wealth began to consume him, he viewed his workers differently as if they were less then him, he began to gamble and became upset whenever he lost money. “It happened more frequently that after a merry evening, he lay late in bed the following morning and felt dull and tired. His only solution was to leave everything that was ieing him to his misery including Kamala. His heart became full of grief and misery to the point where he believed there was only one solution. “He wished passionately for oblivion, to be at rest, to be dead. If only a flash of lightning would strike him! If only a tiger would come and eat him!
