After the civil war After the Civil War, Burnside was a commander to the department in Ohio in 1863. After that, Burnside was in the Knoxville campaign in the fall of 1863. He held the city of Knoxville, Tennessee together until he was replaced. Burnside regained control in 1864 and was in the Overland Campaign at the Battles of the Wilderness. Burnside submitted his resignation letter after his defeat at the Battle of Crater in July of 1864. After he resigned, Burnside went on to a distinguished civilian career, serving as the director of several railways as well as the first president of the National Rifle Association. He served as the governor of Rhode Island from 1866 to 1869, and in 1874 he was elected as a U.S. senator. Burnside served in Congress until his death in 1881 at the age of
