And Who Says So?” by Amei Wallach “It seems pretty clear by now that more or less anything can be designated as art.” This is true, whether or not I think something looks beautiful, or a song sounds melodic it can still be considered art. Sculptures made of trash can be considered art, where I just see someone's leftovers gone rotten. Just like a pile of trash has the possibility of turning into a million dollar sculpture, all art has the possibility of turning into great art. Art isn't great because it looks beautiful to everyone: it's great because it inflicts emotion in the viewer. I look at garbage and see garbage, someone else looks at garbage and sees the struggle of the forgotten few. Wallach quotes artist Richard Prince, who says that there will not be “a consensus” in a room of people. For Prince, his art is good because he feels good when he makes it. In both Eveline and Everyday Use, hidden symbols are used that represent each character. In Eveline, the symbol used is dust which covers everything in Eveline’s life. In Everyday Use, the quilt is the symbol that represents heritage. Also, additional symbols are used to define each character. Symbols add a hidden meaning to the story that can add depth to the characters. In James Joyce’s short story, a prominent symbol is dust. Eveline’s character has lots of dust, since she is lifeless, and never advancing. In Eveline, Eveline looks around her room taking everything in. She observes “all its familiar objects which she had dusted once a week for so many years, wondering where on earth all the dust came from (McMahan et al. 3).” This means that she is looking at her life and all the dust that has accumulated over the years. She is noticing how stale and boring her life is due to all the pressures of her dad. Her dad is the main cause of dust build up all these years. Her father abuses her and “says what he would do to her only for her dead mother’s sake (McMahan et al. 4).” The “dust” in Eveline’s life is due to the pressure of taking care of her dad, and trying to support him. This article presents anovel control technique for application to PWM-AC controllers with ability of generating smallerharmonics. In the proposed control method, both the traditional AC voltage controllers and the PWMAC. controllers are combined, smaller THD values are obtained and switching losses are minimized.Thus, the harmonic pollution in the power system will be reduced and the power quality will beincreased.
