America

...meaning of America? Perhaps the initial thought is the most literal meaning of the word for the individual and how it relates as a geographical location on a map. Quite possibly the more profound meaning of such a term is the philosophical paradigm of America is how it stands as an establishment of freedom for all and retainment of certain God -given rights. Such an individual would see the beauty in wanting to share a concept with the rest of the world and not be content in thinking that America is not merely a place, but it is a way of life that is meant to be enjoyed and explored. For thousands of years, mankind has desired to uncover the secrets of happiness and success as we journey across the vast sphere of this mortal world we live in. Although there are many interpretations as to how life began and how it will all end, the idea of America seems to give balance to the need of attaining a higher sense of existence. Many students believe that the name Ameri ca is named after the great explorer Amerigo Vespucci, but scholars will argue that its etymology is based on various sources in world history and although the name is attributed to Vespucci, it is a culmination of meanings that give it a majestic sound. We have often described America with a feminine title and support the idea that it stands not only as a map discovery from centuries ago, but a state of safety and peace. As a perfect blend between indigenous culture and European ingenuity, America is an opportunity...

There are so many things that people and the government can do to help. The 2014 Hunger Report has a plan to end hunger by the year 2030. This plan consists of a jobs agenda, a stronger safety net, human capital development, and public-private partnerships to help innovative community led initiatives against hunger (“Ending”). Colonial America

...America is sometimes referred to as the land of opportunity and even when America was first being colonized that statement seemed to ring true. People decided to move to the New World for multiple different reasons, but the one thing each of these people had in common with their motives was that they were in search of new opportunities and the chance to have a better life. Some of these groups of people included the members of the Virginia Company and the Pilgrims (Tindall & Shi, 27). After making peace with Spain many of the men who had been adventurers working for James I needed somewhere to go and the idea of getting rich quick by striking gold seemed like the perfect plan. Thus The London Group of the Virginia Company was born and the plan to voyage over to the New Land and form a colony was set into motion. The Virginia Company, a for-profit enterprise chartered by James I, had stock holders who thought that the colony would be a source of gold, wine, olive oil, and forest products that were needed in England (Tindall & Shi, 27). Many of the stock holders also still had hopes that they would find a passage to India (Tindall & Shi, 27). So on May 6, 1607 three ships set sail with 105 men aboard and four months later landed in what they named Virginia and started the first permanent colony in Virginia (Tindall & Shi, 27). The men built a small colony but many of them did not know how to hunt or fish. They had, after all, come to the New World to get rich not to learn...

America In 1492

...The discovery of America in 1492 by Christopher Columbus was one of the most significant events in European history and shaped the political, social and economic developments of the following centuries. At the end of the XV century it seemed clear that the Portuguese had been advanced to the Spaniards in the conquest of the path of the spices and precious metals, thanks to the already exerted on the African west coast. At this time, Christopher Columbus, who had been in the orders of the king of Portugal, offered to the Catholic Kings the project to reach the Indies by following a path toward the west instead of skirting around the African continent. To implement its project, Columbus was premised on the idea of the sphericity of the Earth....

Censorship in America

...Censorship in America Welcome to America. The land of the free and the home of those all too willing to use that right to its fullest extent. The first nation truly founded on the right to speak one’s mind without consequence, America is now the most prosperous nation in the world, largely due to that very fact. We as Americans are blessed to live in a nation that is thriving both politically and socially, both as innovator and steady power, both as a community and as a collection of individuals. The marks of American society have spread far beyond the nation’s borders, with everything from the Big Mac to Steven Spielberg movies to democracy itself making it’s impact felt on this modern world. The name America has become synonymous with freedom, and through this freedom, great wealth, power, and success. And yet history has shown, through the example of democracies like Athens and Rome, that even the greatest of civilizations eventually swerve off course. After reading Patrick Garry’s “An American Paradox: Censorship in a Nation of Free Speech”, Marjorie Heins’ “Not In Front Of The Children”, and various statements from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), I have come to believe that the unstoppable juggernaut that is America may too be in danger of losing its way. The principles of freedom and human rights that this country was founded and subsequently prospered on are often quickly abandoned in the effort to protect the general public from anything deemed even slightly...

Ginsberg America

...Ginsberg: America The poem America by Allen Ginsberg is a harsh critique on the American culture. This poem made me feel like he is giving a lecture to the country of their actions, almost like they are a child being punished. A line that really jumped out at me was when he said, “Go f*** yourself with your atom bomb”. He is clearly talking about Russia and the communists. He is arguing that what we did to them was wrong and who are we to do these things to them. He then proceeds to attack the materialistic America. “America I’ve given you all and now I’m nothing” Letting us know that he has given his all to this country but what has the country given back to him? He then attacks Time magazine by saying “ Are you going to let your emotional life be run by Time Magazine?” He says that this magazine is telling everyone they are important but him. Unless you have a nice job you are nothing to the American culture. Ginsberg throughout the poem attacks the American culture in many ways. He is clearly not happy with the way things are going in this country. This poem is definitely shocking for me; I can’t even imagine the reviews it may have gotten when it was first published. I think that Ginsberg wanted to get his point across to the American people but I do not know if this was the most efficient way. I am sure there are many deeper meanings but this poem was kind of hard for me to understand other than the fact that he is really ticked off at the American...

Central America

...Explain why labor unions in many Central American countries have developed more slowly than those in the United States. Find an article in a professional journal that includes correlation and regression analysis similar to the Case Study on pages 143 and 550. Write a brief report describing the correlation and regression analysis and its role in the context of the article. Correlation and regression analysis are related in the sense that both deal with relationships among variables. Yes, due to violence against members and supports of labor unions in Central America, the development has suffered. Violence as serious as death has occurred as result of many people who support the unions and decide to protest. The use of violence, threats and even murder over labor protests that can land people in prison in the US are looked at as common crimes in many areas of Central America. In recent years the murderers of union members have gotten their cases overturned, never to pay for their crimes. Violence is used as a way of getting the message out that unions will not and should not be supported and the non-supporters will not stand for labor unions. Non-supporters want power over their employees and if unions were to be accepted, they would lose that power. As a result many organizers are afraid for their lives and hesitate to move forward with implanting labor unions and its laws. Also, the violence has made it difficult to attempt to organize as it occasionally ends in tragedy...

English Empire In North America

...The Development of the English Empire in North America From the Restoration in 1660 to the 1750’s As the English colonies began to settle into their new life in the Americas, the process of forming a successful colonization did not appear to be as complicated as it turned out to be. Upon the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, bureaucrats in Britain attempted to impose unjust laws upon the colonies resulting in a war against them, with the aid of the Native Americans. Once King Charles II returned to the throne, he was able to transform the scattered colonies into an intimidating mercantilist empire. He distributed title to the lands of New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and the Carolinas to a few English aristocrats. These were proprietary colonies that remained loyal to the Church of England, with the exception of Pennsylvania which was Quaker. These were...

Latin America

...Latin America is more than just an exotic travel destination for Americans or any travelers from around the world for that matter. Though Latin America is filled with several breath-taking wonders of the world; including their crystal clear waters and beautiful sandy white beaches, tropical rain forests, and ancient historical landmarks. Latin America’s tranquil atmosphere should not be underestimated as the little more than underdeveloped sibling. After examining the history, politics, and economic stand point of the countries in Latin America, they have many similarities with the United States and several differences that should be taken into consideration when dealing with United States foreign policy with Latin American countries. What is Latin America? Where is Latin America? What countries are considered to be a part of Latin American? These are the initial questions a person thinks about when Latin America comes into a discussion. Around the world people will have their own ideas and stereotypes about Latin America, but here are the facts. The term Latin America is used to describe the countries in the sub regions of the Americas that were once the old colonies of European nations. The reference to Latin corresponds to the fact that as product of the colonization from the European nations the languages now spoken in these countries are Latin based. The languages spoken are derived from the so called “Romance tongues” of Spain, Portugal, and France. Latin America stretches...

Bank of America

...Bank of America research paper Kim Adams Wilmington University Bank of America's history dates back to 1904, when Amadeo Giannini founded the Bank of Italy in San Francisco to cater to immigrants who were denied service from other banks. Shortly following the opening of Bank of Italy the San Francisco earthquake struck, causing most banks to halt all lending practices. Giannini managed to rescue funds to start lending within a few days of the disaster to those who was willing to rebuild. Bank of America was formed when Giannini consolidated his Bank of Italy with Bank of America. As of 2010, Bank of America is the 5th largest company in the United States by total revenue, as well as the second largest non-oil company in the U.S. (after Walmart). In 2010, Forbes listed Bank of America as the 3rd biggest company in the world. (CNN Money) As one can imagine, all industries from mom and pop stores to multi million corporations have felt the wrath of the economic downturn. To make the statement that any bank is performing desirably would be a slight exaggeration. Prior to the recession, banks (including Bank of America) were content with relaxed lending guidelines, contracting out any brokers, and questionable appraisers. The above noted coupled with American’s constant desire for more, set the United States up for a perfect storm. The share price, like the US banking market in general, has dipped significantly from its relatively recent highs. The last twelve...
