...Critical Argument Analysis Essay ENG/215 1/26/2015 Jennifer Rainville | Immigration Control Introduction Illegal immigration is a big problem in the United States. If you ask around where you live you will get so many different views and arguments. Realistically immigration has resulted in the laws having more illegal immigrants live and work here in the United States. I have read three different articles on the pros and cons of illegal immigration. Immigration is becoming a normal thing in the United States and it shouldn’t be. Summary In the article “Let Us Give Thanks to Our Immigrants” by Rupert Murdoch, he shows some evidence to support his agreeing with illegal immigration. He shows support on how they have contributed to the education in America. Whereas in the articles “The Winners in Immigration: Public Prisons,” by Aubrey Pringle, and “Republican Views on Immigration,” by RepublicanViews.org shows support on why immigration is not good for the United States. Murdoch shows that many of the high paying jobs in the United States are held by immigrants or children of immigrants. Whereas Pringle and RepublicanViews.org shows that our government is suffering because of all the illegal immigrants in our country. Argument Murdoch is pro-immigration. He has provided evidence to show why he supports immigration. He also was an immigrant himself and all his family was from Scotland. He does state though that these days it’s hard to talk about the benefits...

Contents * 1 Synopsis * 2 Book edition * 3 References * 4 External links | Synopsis Ron Williamson has returned to his hometown of Ada, Oklahoma after multiple failed attempts to play for various minor league baseball teams, including the Fort Lauderdale Yankees and two farm teams owned by the Oakland A's. An elbow injury inhibited his chances to progress. His big dreams were not enough to overcome the odds (less than 10 percent) of making it to a big league game. His failures lead to, or aggravate, his depression and problem drinking.[1] Early in the morning of December 8, 1982, the body of Debra Sue Carter, a 21-year-old cocktail waitress, was found in the bedroom of her garage apartment in Ada. She had been beaten, raped and suffocated. After five years of false starts and shoddy police work by the Ada police department, Williamson—along with his "drinking buddy", Dennis Fritz—were...

...States For the past several years many immigrants have come to the United States (U.S.) illegally at an alarming rate. Many immigrant parents have entered the U.S. illegally bringing extended family, and most importunately their children. The Dream Act which would be the perfect solution to the issues effecting the younger generations brought here. The passing of the Dream Act would boost our economy, reduce crime, and enhance military recruitment. We all know that the United States has been building up a larger debt over the last several years. Thus by allowing illegal immigrants to become bright and talented youth, we will make a new academic strength in the United States of higher educated people. The Dream Act would cut $1.4 billion in the U.S. deficit and increase government revenue by $ 2.3 billion dollars over the next ten years. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said that passing the DREAM Act would allow “these young people to live up to their fullest potential and contribute to the economic growth of our country.” A lot of illegal immigrants want to go to college and can not because of their status. Illegal immigrants under the DREAM Act would have to pay out of state tuitions which draw in more money to stimulate the American economy. Additionally, giving the younger generation of illegal alien status an opportunity to enrich their education and pursue a good paying job would contribute to the economy. Illegal immigrants make up approximately one third of the...

...Adonis Mezee Nyagbona Professor Jacobs English 111 6 October 2015 Pablo Escobar Colombia’s Dream or Nightmare? December 2, 1993 the world’s most wanted man was tracked down to a small house in a suburb outside of Medellin. Many would ask who the world’s most wanted man was at this time and it would be none other than El Padrino (the Godfather) Pablo Escobar. For those who do not know El Padrino he was the world’s largest cocaine distributor in the world. Even though many Colombians prospered from Pablo Escobar’s cocaine trade; was the financial gain worth the state becoming a narco-terror state; and introducing the world to a substance which would increase terror and corruption in two countries. Many Colombians and Americans would say no. Even though killing Pablo Escobar did not reduce the output of cocaine being imported into the U.S. and around the world. Many Colombians felt as if his death ended the narco-terror which paralyzed Colombia for almost fifteen years, but some Colombians believe that his good justified the means of his brutality. In the early 1970’s the United States started a campaign called the War on Drugs, President Richard Nixon declared “drug abuse enemy number one’ in 1971. Why did Richard Nixon take a hard line look at drugs with the Vietnam War taken place? Was it because, he looked at drugs as symbols of rebellion, political strife, and or social upheaval? Who knows what President Nixon’s reasoning for this new policy? After this policy was established...

...Margarita Santana 5/12/16 ISP 16001 Profs. Head and Markowitz Analysis of the Greensboro Sitins The young college protestors used the act of civil disobedience to voice their anger with the country’s unfair policies. Their main goal was to put an end to the segregation on lunch counters in restaurants. When the Greensboro 4 peacefully protested J.W. Woolworths, many other colleges and citizens around the world began to follow. It wasn’t the intention of Ezell, Joseph, Franklin, or David to spark such a big movement but blacks were so outraged with the slow pace to equality. While the precedent of Brown v. Board of Education and the positive outcome of the Montgomery Bus Boycotts helped blacks, the country remained to have unfair policies which limited the success of African Americans. Whites were viewed as superior and were in control of the justice system. A lot of whites didn’t agree with the sitins because they didn’t want to eat with blacks nor wanted to enter a store that’s being protested by blacks. It ruined the businesses of white owners and many whites acted out violently towards the peaceful protestors. Sadly, hundreds of black students were arrested and fined for their actions but didn’t accept bond. They wanted to make a statement and they did because America looked bad by ...

...Matt Williams Splitting Hairs in Disney’s film Tangled Cinderella tells us that a dream is a wish that your heart makes, and following suit dreams play a large part in the newest Disney princess film, Tangled. In the end of the film Rapunzel holds Flynn and they admit their deep secret that they had become each other’s dream, and an “awww” moment ensues. The question to ask is “Where do these dreams come from?” and “What do these dreams mean?” Taking this second question, the implications of Rapunzel and Flynn’s dream impact more than just the world of the film. The Disney Princess films have been studied within an inch of their lives by a great number of scholars in a great number of fields. One common study takes the ideas of gender development and combines them with the Disney Princess films. However, the implications of gender do not stop here as gender identity can still be impacted as the viewers age. Interpretation of the princess films has been a huge aspect of their scholarly application as the behavior of the princesses, and princes, can be interpreted and compared with gender stereotypes and norms to assess the impact their portrayals can have on the viewing audience. The film Tangled is often seen as Disney’s take on a modern princess, and Rapunzel and Flynn have a great deal to contribute to both gender development study and media interpretation of gender. Gender development is a field of study which has been impacted in a number of ways by modern theorists...

...An Analysis of Longfellow's A Psalm of Life Henry Wadsworth Longfellow begins his poem "A Psalm of Life" with the same exuberance and enthusiasm that continues through most of the poem. He begs in the first stanza to be told "not in mournful numbers" about life. He states here that life doesn't abruptly end when one dies; rather, it extends into another after life. Longfellow values this dream of the afterlife immensely and seems to say that life can only be lived truly if one believes that the soul will continue to live long after the body dies. The second stanza continues with the same belief in afterlife that is present in the first. Longfellow states this clearly when he writes, "And the grave is not its goal." Meaning that, life doesn't end for people simply because they die; there is always something more to be hopeful and optimistic for. Longfellow begins discussing how humans must live their lives in constant anticipation for the next day under the belief that it will be better than each day before it: "But to act that each to-morrow / Find us farther than to-day." In the subsequent stanza, Longfellow asserts that there is never an infinite amount of time to live, but art that is created during one's life can be preserved indefinitely and live on long after its creator dies. In the following stanzas, Longfellow likens living in the world to fighting on a huge field of battle. He believes that people should lead heroic and courageous lives and not sit idle and remain...

...of their pajamas, or brush their teeth to steal every dime a person has. Computers are the perfect weapon because they do not need food, sleep and can be programmed to constantly run, bouncing from account to account ruining every life it touches. With all the theft going on, some are committing suicide because they cannot fix all the damage these thieves have done to their lives. The big Internet crimes reported on the news are kids file sharing music. File sharing is considered a form of theft, but sharing one album compared to thieves ruining lives stealing billions from people who live check to check is like comparing apples and oranges. The creators of technology could not even have imagined all the bad stuff that has become of their dreams and hard work. Computers were built to solve calculations and then kept evolving to help make life easier and more efficient. Trouble started with the World Wide Web, because people started transmitting personal information through the airways. People do not understand some stuff that is sent over the web, one does not have control on who can collect that information. When people are talking about kids stealing music, the first thing that comes to mind, is a group of punk kids grabbing a hand full of CDs and running out of the local record store. The big criminal music thieves are not running out of the store pushing things over, or ruining things in...

...1, One of the readings that was significant to me was “Estranged Labor” from Karl Marx. This reading discusses how under capitalism, society is divided into the wage workers and the capitalists who have misappropriated the means of production from the workers, thereby making them suffer alienation in many different forms. The first form of alienation is where the worker grows to see the object of his work as foreign and hostile to himself. Although the worker invests his entire life into this object, he doesn’t own the means of production and gains nothing out of his work other than a mere paycheck that’s just enough for him to survive and continue working. The more he produces the more alienated he becomes. This alienation is where the worker is estranged from the product. The second alienation is where the worker is alienated from the actual activity of working. This is because this work doesn’t come from his natural desire to express himself creatively but instead he is only working as a means of survival. He is forced to work, not for himself, but for someone else benefit. Which means that typically the working is doing a job that is demeaning to him, or he finds to be lesser than himself, because he’s forced to do this work he loses his sense of self and dignity in the process. The third kind is alienation from his species...

...should therefore be seen as a threat to society. Yet a functionalist analysis of deviance begins with society as a whole. It looks for the source of deviance in the nature of society rather than in the individual. They argue that social control mechanisms such as the police and the courts are necessary to keep deviance in check and to protect social order, as well as deviance being a necessary part of all societies and that it performs positive functions for social systems that even contribute to the maintenance and well being of society. They believe crime and deviance should be limited in order it to benefit all. Functionalists believe crime and deviance have positive functions such as crime and deviance acting like a warning device, some acts warn of problems that exist in the system. As a result, action can be taken to address the problem for example a child may skip school due to problems at home. As a result of the truancy the larger problems of abuse or cultural and material deprivation may be addressed and greater problems avoided. Crime and deviance could help society progress: today’s deviants are tomorrow’s innovators as people who challenge existing norms and values help to create better ways of living. For example Emily Pankhurst and the suffragettes helped create a more liberated society and votes for women. Employment is provided by the criminal justice system for judges, court officials, prison guards, builders, police, lawyers and cleaners making a significant...

...to get good a grade. As an employee, you should work hard to get a promotion. This is a classic American dream: as long as you work hard, you can always achieve your dream no matter what backgrounds you come from. However, reality seems to be disappointed. Working hard is not the only way to get ahead any more. Those who work much harder seem to be less successful than those who work less hard but know how to play tricks. Cheating is a secret weapon that could make you move forward. It is becoming more common, tempting and covert than it was fifty years ago. It is the time to hold our remaining virtues to fight against unethical behaviors. We should identify factors that have led to the phenomenon of cheating and then seek effective ways to conquer it. In their book Final Accounting, Toffler and Reingold (2003) talked about how the world once greatest accounting firm Arthur Andersen cheated together with its clients to mislead investors and eventually collapsed after being disclosed many astounded accounting scandals of the firm. Toffler and Reingold (2003) pointed out that people tend to blame such cheating scandals to a few bad individuals. Whereas, it is the culture that should take the responsibility. It is the corrupting culture that makes cheating an attractive way to get what you want (p.204). In the book, The Cheating Culture, David Callahan (2004) provided a lucid analysis of how this cheating culture we are living in generated and what we can do to get over it. He defined...

Charles Kerber POLS 202 9AM American Government Livingston This paper will take a critical look at the history of the democratic party, its most recent 2012 election, its current presidential candidate Barack Obama, and the latest platform. While the paper may read as being highly critical of President Obama, it should be caveated by the fact that this is an extremely trying time in the history of the United States, and the government is under considerable pressures from outside terrorism threats and international relations, to severe recession and domestic economic concerns. Nevertheless, one must look critically at President Obama, and answer has he really given us “change we can believe in”? Biography & history The Democratic party went through a number of iterations before it became the current democratic party. The party began as the anti federalists under the leadership of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Thomas Jefferson a former secretary of state under George Washington's administration who had resigned to protest the fiscal policies of Alexander Hamilton. These two rivals would become the basis of the first two political parties of the United States. Alexander Hamilton favored the constitution, the creation of a national bank and repayment of the revolutionary war debt with federal funds. Under this philosophy they would name themselves Federalists, for their leaders support of ratifying the constitution...
