In the 1830s through the 1850s, American expansionism impacted the West and created sectional issues that would lead to dissolution of the Union. In document A John L. O’ Sullivan gives a good statement on the view of our country. He helps give important claims about America compared to other unions. In document A it states “we point to the everlasting truth on the first page of out national declaration and we proclaim to the millions of other lands, that” the gates of Hell”— the powers of aristocracy and monarch— “shall not prevail against it”. This quote is stating how the United States are going to be not like the other lands and not going to have powers of monarchy prevent them. Many people were eager to fight in the south and West, hoping to claim new land. The Northerners opposed the war because they saw it as a plot for the southern to add a slave state to the union. The Mexican general hurried to California and took control of the southern part of the land. The United States in 1847 had control of New Mexico, California, and Mexico City. They also acquired a strip of land from Arizona and New Mexico. The war helped the United States expansion and transformed the west. After Charles Sumner made the crime against Kansas speech, he was beaten. Most of the people of Kansas did not feel happy about what Charles Sumner had to say. In the Oregon Boundary treaty, it is when they separated United States and Canada. With a boundary westward of the forty ninth parallel of the north latitude. The documents showed disagreements and different views. Many of these documents had personal opinions. Such as, John Tyler’s annual message to Congress. He states “ we are called upon by the highest obligations of duty to renew our thanks and our devotion to our heavenly parent”. This shows bias but it is a message to Congress that is hoping to shape our country. The American expansion might have
