...Villains; The bad ones when it comes to the conflict of good and evil. Since the beginning, the mention of this word struck fear into the hearts of children who loved fairy tales. But now, in the digital age, where films rule as a primary source for our entertainment, villains have become more likeable. Welcome Ladies and Gentleman to the Australian Literary Festival. Do you believe that such introductions as; The Joker, Loki, Severus Snape and Darth Vader, the ones who have allowed themselves to fall to the whims of their dark side have made us become more empathetic? When you normally think about characters, you either love or hate them, but some challenge that clear separation. We begin to feel like, maybe they deserve a bit of slack, rather...

...Despicable Me As a fan of Pixar’s genius, I really sought out to see this movie as soon as it came out. But before that, I exhausted all of the film’s hilarious and engaging theatrical trailers. I also went out of my way to read a couple of the movie’s review. It might not have garnered not-so-good ratings but the plot, the cast, and also a bit because of the music all made me finally decide to go check it out. No one out there would think that being a super villain is hard. Especially when he has thousands of yellow globular minions who are perpetually loyal and ready to help him achieve his next evil plot. All he needs is his freeze ray gun, a pet that looks like a Venus Fly Trap with hind legs, and an armored tank for a car. Meet Gru—the friendliest of the super villains. The worst he does is to steal things. Huge things, that is. He once set out to steal the Pyramid of Giza but found out there’s someone out there who got to it first. He doesn’t like it that his work gets shadowed by some new super villain. He then realized he needed to step up his game. Without a bigger get, his mother will never respect him, the Bank of Evil won’t finance him, and his Minions will end up unemployed. But what’s bigger than a pyramid? Look up. Gru wants to steal the moon. Turns out, Gru has always had the dream to rocket to the moon. So he now has a big chance to make a dream come true and get glory and honor at the same time. But how does one steal the moon? You shrink it of course...

...Brandon Hight 2/23/15 Health Communication Helping with Teen Problems I've helped out with a lot of people/teens with all kinds of things, anywhere from suicidal thoughts to having family issues. I've saved lives and helped out a lot and when I can. Some people just think suicidal teens are crazy and no one wants to talk to them and that’s how I help is I take the time and listen in a way that others don’t. I'm able to give advice because I know I how it feels to go down that road, I've been down there before in my life and still working my way back up. I've changed a lot in the past few months, so much that I didn’t think this day would come. After looking at the information from the class and assignments I will be more honest and open with anyone I’m trying to help. You would find anything like this from a lot of teens on a website called Facebook and at a public school, but you can never be too careful, some people don’t like to talk about personal problems and there are some that they will talk your ear off but usually those are the teens that care about someone helping them. If you really like about it everyone needs help with something that their dealing with and I mean everyone. Ways to make a more positive ways of making others think when you’re helping is let them know that you have been down the same road so they with trust the information even more when you’re talking, another one is to tell the other person how much they are cared...

...From glistening ball gowns, to fairy godmothers and singing animals- Walt Disney has little girls everywhere growing up, with aspirations of being the next “Anna”. What the mirror on the wall did not teach us, is that the gender portrayals in these movies are not the fairest of them all. Since the first moment that Snow White bit into that succulent red apple, it was obvious that Disney was entrenched in misogyny that dates back to the mythology of Adam and Eve. Don’t get me wrong: I too was a doe-eyed Disney devotee and it took me a while to realise that it was better to depend upon charming chocolate than a Prince Charming. However it is now the 21st century and times have changed; Disney is no longer ‘Frozen’ in antiquated gender stereotypes. Notice the pun? Quite literally, “Frozen” (2013) has shattered princess stereotypes with a beautiful and funny adventure that’s a sure-fire Disney classic. “For the First Time in Forever” says the main song of the movie, and I kind of felt like singing the words too because for the first time in forever, the main characters of a Disney picture are independent females that don’t appear to rely on a guy, or a prince, that solves everything with a smooch. It’s true that Frozen is the rectification of a more modern woman role because there have been- in the past- some Disney movies with strong female protagonists such as Mulan (1998) and Pocahontas (1995). They didn’t need a man to be the saviour of the picture! This movie empowers...

...CULTURE: Performance-drive: Many PE associates feel like they are directly contributing to the fund’s performance. That feeling is almost completely absent from banking. PE associates know that a large part of their compensation is a function of how well these investments do and have a vested interest in focusing on how to extract the maximum value of all portfolio companies. When there is an active deal it can be a high pressure environment. Comparable to banking when there is an active deal, but otherwise much more relaxed: Usually get into the office around 9am and may leave between 7pm-9pm depending on what you’re working on. Possibility of working weekends when there is an active deal, but usually the weekends are yours. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Size: Private equity firms tend to be smaller in nature so your entire fund may be only 15 people. As an Associate, you will have interaction with everyone including the most senior partners. Unlike at many of the bulge bracket investment banks, senior management will know your name and what you are working on. Traditional vs Google: Certain PE shops that have taken a “Google” approach and offer free food, toys in the office, televisions in offices, and sometimes even beer in the fridge or a keg in the office. Other PE firms are run more like traditional, conservative corporations where you are in a cube environment. ...evaluating. This is NOT simply a summary of a film. Do NOT write what happened start to finish. Your goal is: defend what you liked or disliked in the film – feel free to use examples – but SHOW why/how you liked/disliked them. You can select acting, plot, direction, cinematography, CG, special effects, hue/tone, music (soundtrack or score), costumes, genre (romance, horror, etc…) and more. Simply select several elements. An example: The film featured excellent performances, by all the cast. Christian Bale, as always is great as Batman. Anne Hathaway was completely engrossing; she became "Catwoman", just like Michele Pfeiffer did, although their interpretations were very different, both were equally effective. Tom Hardy, the main villain ("Bane"), completely shattered my expectations. One of...

...A villain is a character whose evil actions or motives are important to the plot of a play, novel or film. The obvious villains of Shakespeare’s ‘The Merchant of Venice’ and Marlowe’s ‘The Jew of Malta’ would be Shylock and Barabas respectively as these two characters are both depicted as evil and greedy Jews, perhaps due to the racial hatred of the Elizabethan era and the ongoing stigma of Judaism in English society. However, it could be argued that the women of the two plays, including the daughters of the two aforementioned antagonists, Jessica and Abigail, wealthy wife of Bassanio – Portia in ‘The Merchant of Venice’ and the cunning courtesan of ‘The Jew of Malta’, Bellamira, are more villainous than the traditional figure of vices of Shylock and Barabas due to the way that the female characters interact with and often disregard the norms of the Elizabethan era and the expected behaviours of women even in modern society. Women in fiction, especially young women, very rarely tend to be portrayed as villainous due to the cultural expectations of femininity. Womanly and feminine traits are those of ones of love, care and innocence, thus women and girls will not be traditionally assumed to be deviant or cruel due to the preconceived idea and judgement that society has on women. In the 21st Century, there is still this assumption in place as women are often able to manipulate the patriarchy and criminal justice system to their own advantage by adopting the traditional female...

Even if we should wish to recover that older world we can do it only by an intensive study of the ways in which the media have swallowed it. -Marshall McLuhan (Sontag, 1977) Introduction ‘2012’- a film by Ronald Emmerich Hollywood's reigning king of catastrophe (Kois, November 13, 2009), came into public on 13th November 2009 with a view to making the audience experience the end of the world. ...the self defense company “The Top 10 Tactics Every Street Smart Person Knows” First of all everyone and their mother will tell you to be aware of your surroundings, trust your instincts and yell “fire” instead of “help”. This advice is all good advice, but since it’s almost common knowledge I’m going to briefly mention our take on these ideas and not “charge” you for it because they’re NOT on the list. The basic rule of measure is if something feels wrong, it is. Pay attention to that little voice inside your head. Women have “intuition” while men have a “gut feeling”. You’re more perceptive than you think. You have been evolving for millions of years and “fear” is your friend when used in the manner in which it was intended. If you get “that feeling”, you need to implement a radical change of action. For example: if you’re looking for your car and you feel like you’re being followed, duck into a store and call someone. If you’re going into your apartment, pretend to remember something you forgot in the car and go get it. This little change in behavior will be the difference of life and death at the cost of a handful of minutes. There are countless instances where people recalled seeing their attacker earlier in the day. Don’t let a little inconvenience cause you to sacrifice your life. Remember most people die in the wild because of shame. They ask themselves, “What did I do wrong? How could I have gotten myself into this?" And so they sit ...

...Not all heroes wear capes, sometimes it's the villains that wear the capes. The story The Odyssey is about a king named Odysseus and he is sailing home from Troy after the Trojan War was over. There are many reasons why Odysseus is not a hero, throughout the whole story Odysseus wasn't doing heroic things, he was almost doing some villainous things. One of the reasons why Odysseus is not a hero is that he is a murderer. In the story it says “ In blood and dust he saw that crowd all fallen, many and many slain. Think of a catch that fisherman haul into a half-moon bay in a fine-meshed net rom the whitecaps of the sea: how all are poured out on the sand, in throes for the salt sea, twitching their cold lives away in Helio’s fiery air: so...

For obvious reasons of course, however now that I'm older If I was offered the role of the villain or the hero in a movie I would choose to be a villain for several personal reasons beyond the fact of just being the villain. Being a villain would allow me to experience a troubled life by making bad, morally wrong decisions, but from that I can learn important essential life lessons by learning from my mistakes and I could change myself for the better. My thoughts are beyond just the fact of being the bad guy in the superhero film....

...There is many types of villains. Real and fake but they are all the same in the end. They do something bad because of some reason that they do not approve of. For example Adolf Hitler is a big example of a villain. Another villain is Randall Boggs from the movie Monsters Inc. Another example of a villain is Goliath from the Bible. These are three examples of villains that are well known. They all have something in common. Either it is that they are mean, violent, scary, and so much more. What made Adolf Hitler bad was the idea of him wiping out the Jews and not so perfect people until only the perfect race could exist. The reason that made him do this was because during this time Germany was in a poor economic state. Adolf Hitler wants to murder all people who are not so perfect. That is what makes him bad. Adolf Hitler tries to achieve to wipe out the imperfect. What he does is basically make concentration camps and starts to capture and take other countries’ land. ...Are spoons responsible for obesity? Do cars drive drunk? The answer is no. In today's society, accepting responsibility is rare and an excuse is now a proper replacement for the truth. Over the past few years the nation has focused the blame on the entertainment industry for playing a significant part in glamorizing violence with today's youth, from music to movies to video games and television shows, society believes that these products are responsible for the seemingly increasingly violent and horrific crimes. Blaming the entertainment industry is just an excuse, really is real and fake is fake, and sensory entertainment just isn't fair to the public. Imagine a world without Batman, Spiderman, Michael Myers, and pretty much anything with Bruce Willis or Tom Cruise.
