...Jean Louise Finch, known as Scout, is the daughter of Atticus Finch, and as a native young girl, it is hard for her to understand the internal issues regarding Maycomb. As Scout progresses through school years and grows older, she is exposed to different views on blacks, most of which give blacks a negative connotation. Even though many of her peers and teachers believe the treatment of blacks is fair, Scout does not see color as a deciding factor to whether they should be treated nicely, instead she just sees everyone as people, with no regards to race. One discussion that Atticus and the children have is about the trial. While Scout and her brother, Jeremy Atticus Finch, both agree that it was unfair for Tom to have been convicted. Atticus tells the kids “As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men everyday of your life” (Lee 295). This begins to show Scout really how common discrimination of blacks really is. Even Atticus, the most moral person accepted that racial prejudice of blacks is going to continue to be an issue for many years. While Scout knows Tom was cheated out of a fair trial because of his skin color, she also knows that the injustice of Tom’s treatment was invisible to the jury. Outside of the court case Scout’s views on race get further divided in the classroom. During class one day Miss.Gates, Scout’s third grade teacher discusses her views on Hitler’s regime with the class. She begins with describing the differences of America and Germany...

Web. 15 Dec. 2011. In this scholarly article, Jean McNeil explains how women are being portrayed in movies by how attractive they are and how “well dressed” they are and talks about how there are basically used as sex toys for the audience. Also, she explains that women are being used to dress inappropriately on movies to draw people in to watch them on television. This article will be helpful to my project because it provides enough and helpful information on my topic. However, it provides important statistics, such as women are being well-dressed in movies. I will be able to use that information for my paper to prove that women are used to attract people to watch it. This will be beneficial to my audience because they will be more engaged to how women are basically being used as a sex toy in movies. University Press of Kentucky. “Women Movie Stars as Role Models.” From Mae to Madonna: Women Entertainers in Twentieth-century America. (1999): 77–106. Web. ...Crash Kendra Koelsch SOC1101: Human Behavior Instructor Robyn Milliken-Setser August 17th, 2015 The movie Crash (2005) is intended to be a nature of life in America in regards to equality. It is set in Los Angeles, it is about social and cultural stereotypes, race, and the conflict that often ensues as a result. The movie is presented in the conflict perspective which according to Richard T. Schaefer (2009) "assumes that social behavior is best understood in terms of tension between groups over power including housing, money, access to services and political representation". Crash uses tension to the story line of each character forcing them into positions of conflict as well as dependence, and emphasizes the status of equality in America. In order to progress to a more equal society it is essential like Americans presented in the movie Crash, especially those most often seen in modern society such as stereotyping, hate crimes, etc… Schaefer defines stereotypes as "unreliable generalizations about all members of a group shows a car crash involving two police detectives and an Asian woman. ...to chase happiness some people must let go of their fundamental basics. Travelling to another country can be very hard especially the lack of friends, family and the fact that you need to learn an entirely new culture. The short story “Where the Gods fly”, written by a Chinese American writer, Jean Kwok. Jean Kwok tells the story about a family that emigrates from China to America, and how the Chinese mother struggles to give her daughter, Pearl the life she affords. She is bound to her old culture and protects her daughter through her religion and hers decisions. A first person narrator tells the story, from a mother’s perspective. Her, her husband and her daughter migrated from China when her daughter Pearl was a child. While reading the story we notice, that the narrator shifts in the grammatical tense, which is what structures the plot of the story. In the present narrative tense, we find the mother in some sort of religious state of mind, where she prays to specific gods and spirits, for example “Ah, Amitabha, Buddha of great compassion, I whisper…”(p 2 l. 24). While she finds herself in this state, she is reminded of her family’s, life since they moved from China to America, obviously these parts of the story is told in the past tense. The story begins in the present tense, as a sort of description, where she is reflecting about her daughter, how she wants her to quit dancing, where she afterwards explain the family’s journey to...

...Nursing Theorist: Ida Jean Orlando University of Phoenix Nursing 403 Nursing Theorist: Ida Jean Orlando Ida Jean Orlando was born in 1926, the first of her Italian family born in America. She received multiple degrees while pursuing her education. Orlando started with her nursing diploma in 1947 and achieved even greater success in her educational endeavors by eventually receiving her B.S. in public health, and her M.A. in mental health nursing. Orlando became an associate professor at Yale University in 1954. While at Yale, she became the project investigator of a National Institute of Mental Health grant. Orlando’s participation and research in the grant study led her to the discovery of her theory that she first described as the Deliberative Nursing Process. The model was developed after feeling dissatisfied with the realization that nursing was motivated by doctor’s orders and institutional criteria, rather than patient-focused care. (Tyra, 2008). The premise of Orlando’s theory is based on the relationship between the nurse and patient and whether or not the nurse is giving “good” patient care or “bad” patient care. She discovered in her research that patients and nurses alike considered good patient care the ability of the nurse to focus on the patient’s behavior, both verbal and non-verbal (Alligood, 2010). Bad patient care occurred when the nurse’s focus was strictly task-oriented or had nothing to do with the patient’s behavior or needs. According to Orlando...

...Hip-Hop and Its Impact on America Erick Acosta U.S History II Honors Period 4 Mr. Pannone May 4, 2009 Hip Hop and Its Impact on America Hip-Hop is one of the genres most criticized by America. Many people thought that Hip-Hop would fade away soon after it was introduced in the late 70s. These people were wrong because over 25 years have passed and Hip-Hop is now very popular in American culture. Hip-Hop has grown a great deal since its beginnings in south Bronx. Now Hip-Hop and rap music can be found anywhere from CDs, television shows, advertisements, and the internet. This shows how big of an impact it has on America and American music. A brief history shows Hip-Hop’s achievements and milestones. Hip-Hop is divided into two: the DJ and the MC. The DJ: Hip Hop began in South Bronx during the late 1970s. It arose when block parties were common in New York City. Deejays would use a technique to isolate the percussion breaks in songs. They did this because they knew that these percussion breaks would be easier to dance to (Hip-Hop music, par 5). This technique was very much seen in Jamaica and was brought to New York by DJ Kool Herc. DJ Kool Herc from Jamaica was known as the father of Hip-Hop. There were other Deejays that contributed to the expansion of Hip-Hop. These Deejays were DJ Hollywood, who invented the term Hip-Hop, and Grand Wizard Theodore, who invented scratching. Scratching is a technique used by deejays to produce distinctive sounds by moving a vinyl...

...Title of Assignment – Move Analysis Paper - CRASH Student’s Name – Emmanuel Rweyemamu Professor/Institute – Dr. Lisa McDonnell Course, Date – SOC 1101 Analysis of Movie, Crash Introduction and Thesis: Written and directed by Paul Haggis, “Crash” was released in 2004. The movie highlights the trials and tribulations experienced by a various racial ethnical groups from varied geographical locations. Acculturation is not easy for these several Racial Groups such as Hispanics, Asians, or Africans, as the incidents in the film covering a time span of 36 hours, reveal. The characters are portrayed in the context of several ethnic stereotypes in prevalence, even in the 21st century due to ethnic differences. To illustrate, “The predominant modern stereotypes are the violent, brutish African-American male and the dominant, lazy African-American female - the Welfare Mother (Green, 1998-1999, p. 1).” Set in a mixed society of different cultures the aim is to prompt the audience into ‘looking into themselves’ and acknowledge their own personal prejudices; they are overt or covert racists too. The 3 elements of cultures openly portrayed are the language used, the norms maintained by society, both formal and informal. As far as how many viewers actually have the courage to accept their faulty mindsets, is left to them. While at first glance, the movie appears to send out a passionate appeal about ending racism and discrimination, an in-depth probe reveals that the ‘wrongness’ of proclaiming...

...In modern day America standards of beauty are virtually unattainable and made that way by main stream media. Even though the standards of beauty are set so unrealistic by companies using models to show off the products they are trying to sell, all people want to do is look like the celebrities that are shown. By showing the attractive celebrities in their ads they are making you think that buying their product will make you look like them or help you achieve a goal of looking like them. From something as simple as a box of cereal to a new car, companies are using celebrities in their ads to make it seems like they are the best and that you should buy their product. In today’s world you seem to never see ordinary looking people in advertisements because that is not what sells. In modern day America standards of beauty are virtually unattainable and made that way by main stream media. Nick Jonas turned heads when he was featured in Flaunt Magazine wearing only Calvin Klein underwear and jeans around his ankles. In the ad you see four pictures of Nick in different poses all wearing the same thing and looking directly at the camera. Imagine being a male teen and seeing an ad for Calvin Klein with a ¾ naked Nick Jonas. They are immediately going...

The company was started five years ago in Nashville, TN, and has seen steady growth in the United States. The cost of raw materials and manufacturing domestically have become too expensive, so Narcissus needs look outside of the USA. Narcissus is aware of other creators of designer apparel that have gotten bad press for using the “Made in the USA” label because the brands only make a portion each piece of their apparel in the USA. The purpose of this memorandum is to examine the possibility of bringing to the USA neighbor by working with “Maquiladora”, the Spanish word for manufacturer, in Mexico. Aspects of US law, international legal implications, as well as the ethical implications of moving this portion of the company to Mexico are the primary focus areas of research. Domestic Legal and Ethical Implications: Narcissus Denim was founded and gained success because of the quality of the product, in great part because the apparel is “made in the USA”. ...Option for College students. There is a highly debated topic on whether or not students should be forced to take General Education classes at college. College is a time for exploring all options that lay ahead. General education classes are a great way for students to discover themselves and their passions, especially if students are unsure of what they want to do with the rest of their lives. However, a strong case can be made that college students by no means should be forced to take them, especially for those students who have already declared on a major. As we all know, college is already too expensive to be wasting money on classes with little to no interest in. As a result, it is a waste of time and a high risk for getting bad grades in those classes. Instead of throwing the money out of the window, general education classes should be an option for college students, not a requirement. One of the main reasons why college students should not be required to take general education classes is because of the cost of college. According to the “Public College Tuition Spikes”, the average tuition costs rose about 8.3% to an average of $5,189 in the 2011-2012 school years. In the previous academic year, students paid with an average of $4,793, which is just adding on to the thousands of the already overpriced tuition. While those students who still on that path on struggling to pay courses that are unnecessary, tuition prices will continue to rise due to the troubling...
