American universities are the best in the world, with new innovations and breakthrough technologies being created on a daily basis, and an expendable amount of information to be learned, American students are often found in a time crunch. Subsequently, more and more students are looking for ways to increase their productivity and work potential. When time management reaches its optimum benefit, students are often found looking for new, less conservative and unfortunately riskier ways of maintaining their ambitions. Pharmaceutical
Stimulants, particularly amphetamines have become the new trend among those trying to achieve their goals of higher education. Some have hailed it as, “the only drug with a positive purpose”
(K. Graff, 3). Unfortunately, as with all drugs, from pharmacies or the street, come with risks. …show more content…
Amphetamines are psychoactive stimulants that increase the rate of electric signals traveling down the axons of nerve clusters. Essentially, the brain converts thoughts into electrical impulses through the somatic nervous system. The more electrical currents running down the axons, the more information can be relayed to the rest of the body. This theory, although simple in nature, relies on the delicate balance of the axons ability to carry and transport the electric

The Use of Ritalin by College Students

...PSY347: Neuroethics Prof. Kozuch- FA11 The Use of Ritalin by College Students Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, more commonly referred to as ADHD or ADD, is a chronic behavioral disorder with problem areas which include hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity (Rodriguez, 2010). In order to treat such a disorder, cognitive stimulants are used to counteract the symptoms and calm the patient in order to for them to focus. However, these medications have a paradoxical effect on people who do not suffer from such a disorder. This has caused many people, mostly college and high school students, to use them for cognitive enhancement rather than to treat a condition. A study completed by DeSantis and Hane (2010) surveyed and analyzed information given to them by an undergraduate sample, to find out their justifications for using these pharmaceuticals illegally. Of the arguments presented by the undergraduates, there were four main contentions: comparison-and-contrast, all-things-in-moderation, self-medicating, and minimization (DeSantis & Hane, p31). This paper will focus on comparison-and-contrast, and how the arguments are inconsistent with facts and information available. Due to the amount of compelling research completed in this area, DeSantis & Hane completed an additional experiment to concur and elaborate on the great findings found in the other studies; one of which found as many as 34% of the student sample using a form of cognitive stimulant...

Alcohol and Drug Abuse

...Name: Class: Teacher: Topic: Alcohol and Drug Abuse Drug Abuse. Physiological Effects * Physiological effects of drug abuse vary by the type of drug. Stimulants, such as amphetamines, can delay sleep and elevate a person's mood, but high amounts can cause nervousness and anxiety in the user. Depressants, by contrast, impair mental and physical functions, and slow neural activity in the brain. With some drugs, especially narcotics such as opium or heroin, the body can build a tolerance in which it adjusts to the drug's presence. Over time, the body requires higher doses to maintain the same effect. When an abuser stops taking the drug, the body experiences withdrawal symptoms, such as feeling weak or sick. Withdrawal symptoms are the body's reaction to the absence of the drug to which it had become adjusted. Social Effects * The social effects of drug abuse begin with abusers and their families. Substance abuse has been a factor in divorce, family violence and related problems. The social effects extend into the larger society, as well, such as through crimes committed by drug abusers to get money needed to feed drug habits. Further, the lucrative nature of drug trafficking fuels crime as rival drug gangs fight for control of the traffic. The U.S. government, for example, noted increased drug-related violence on the U.S.-Mexico border and cited drug gangs in these areas as the nation's leading organized crime threat Economic Effects * Reports...

Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs

...Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs: A Community Concern Introduction Alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use on college and university campuses poses tremendous concern for parents, students, higher education professionals, governmental officials, and the general community. No school is immune to substance use and resulting adverse consequences. Alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana are the most commonly used drugs on college campuses, but this use encompasses drugs of varying forms including amphetamine, caffeine, cocaine, hallucinogen, inhalants, opioid, phencyclidine, sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic, steroids, and polysubstances. An essential feature of substance abuse is a maladaptive pattern of substance use leading to recurrent and clinically significant impairment or adverse consequences. Substance use and abuse are characterized by noted inefficiencies in life functioning, impaired relationships, high-risk behavior, and recurrent legal troubles. Substance dependency emerges from repeated use of the substance despite significant problems related to its use. Substance abuse appears to be etiologically linked to "complex interactions of genetic predisposition, psychological vulnerability, and sociocultural influences" (Archer and Cooper, p. 77). Extensive family history of addiction, poor self-esteem, negative emotional orientation, and few coping skills actively play a role in substance dependency. Skewed perceptions of social norms, peer values and behaviors, and pre-college...

The Dangers of Adderall Abuse

...Samantha Bedore 04/23/2016 The Dangers of Adderall Abuse Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a common disorder that is usually diagnosed during childhood and continues throughout adulthood. ADHD is treatable through behavior modification therapy and medication. There have been various drugs manufactured for people that have been diagnosed with ADHD such as Adderall, Ritalin, and Dexedrine. Adderall is used to help people diagnosed with ADHD have better concentration, memory, organization, and self-esteem by stimulating the production of dopamine (Moore, 2014). There is a rising trend among adolescents with abusing Adderall; which is the most prescribed ADHD medication. When taken correctly, Adderall can greatly benefit people with ADHD control their symptoms, but when abused can lead to substance abuse, cardiovascular problems, and sudden death. Prescription drugs should be taken responsibly and only by the person that they are prescribed to. Even though the trend among young people is to abuse Adderall, when taken incorrectly and by the wrong people, Adderall can lead to having substance abuse problems. According to Moore, The DEA labels Adderall as a Schedule-II substance because it has addictive qualities that lead to physical dependency, mental dependency, and abuse (Moore, 2014). Physical dependency is when a person is so addicted to a drug that if they do not have it then they cannot function. Mental dependency is when a person is so addicted to a drug...

Adderall Abuse

...frustration and anxiety are using legitimate drugs for a “quick fix” i.e., Adderall to help enhance concentration. Adderall is becoming a popular study aid for students. Most students are unaware of Adderral’s potential dangers that can lead a student into a mental and physical nightmare.             Stimulants, such as Adderall are commonly prescribed medications for people diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Individuals diagnosed with ADD, have symptoms known as an inattention or mind-wandering symptom. Adderall is an effective drug used with a combination of amphetamine compounds that covers a broad range of attention deficit disorder symptoms. Volkow (2009) stated that these stimulants are a single-entity amphetamine product combining the neutral sulfate salts of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine that will help increase energy and release endorphins for feelings of excitement.             Students with ADD find stimulants useful in times of stress especially when faced with deadlines during midterms or finals. Some students say Adderall helps increase concentration, retain information, and creates an overall desire to study and learn. In these situations, a student’s desire to adjust to stress is satisfied by seeking alternate ways to help boost performance. In addition, students view Adderall as a way to slip into a cognitive awareness with the ability to work without distractions. Some students have come to rely...

Ethical Issues Regarding the Use of Performance Enhancing Drugs in Sports

...which will be presented and discussed in this paper. While addressing this ethical issue, we need to define the term ethics. Ethics can be defined as the socially accepted norms and values. These norms and values are varied from society to society and are based on culture and tradition. Ethics also could be defined as the unsaid, un-written and understood laws that prevail in a society. Ethics also cover what is right and what is wrong in society and teaches individuals to act in the right manner and remain committed towards it. Taking performance enhancing drugs has a long history in sport. In 1904, a marathon runner nearly died from a mixture of brandy and strychnine, a poisonous substance that in small quantities acts as a stimulant. Amphetamines replaced strychnine as the stimulant of choice among athletes in the 1930s. In the 1950s,...

...or dangerous effects. A person may have a physical dependence on a substance without having an addiction. For example, certain blood pressure medications do not cause addiction but they can cause physical dependence. Other drugs, such as cocaine, cause addiction without leading to physical dependence. Tolerance to a drug (needing a higher dose to attain the same effect) is usually part of addiction. Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Drug abuse can lead to drug dependence or addiction. People who use drugs for pain relief may become dependent, although this is rare in those who don't have a history of addiction. The exact cause of drug abuse and dependence is not known. However, a person's genes, the action of the drug, peer pressure, emotional distress, anxiety, depression, and environmental stress all can be factors. Peer pressure can lead to drug use or abuse, but at least half of those who become addicted have depression, attention deficit disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, or another mental health problem. Children who grow up in an environment of illicit drug use may first see their parents using drugs. This may put them at a higher risk for developing an addiction later in life for both environmental and genetic reasons. People who are more likely to abuse or become dependent on drugs include those who: • Have depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia • Have easy access to drugs • Have low self-esteem, or problems with relationships...

High Times in the Workplace

...its impact on operations and employee productivity. Positivity Results of Workplace Drug Tests It has been shown that over the last 25 years, drug use among American workers has steadily declined. The Quest Diagnostics Drug Testing Index analysis examined over 125 million urine drug tests as a service for government and private employers from 1988 to 2012. This examined the positivity rates for employers across the United States workforce in both the public and private sector. Since 1988, the positivity rate for the combined U.S. Workforce declined 74% from 13.6% in 1988 to 3.5% in 2012. This result is encouraging for employers; however, the study also revealed some findings that are cause for concern. The positivity rates for amphetamines and methamphetamines have more than tripled over the last decade. As of 2012, this was at its highest level since 1997. Also concerning is that the positivity rates for prescription opiates have increased over the last decade. This can be correlated to rising prescription trends nationally (“Drug Use Among American Workers declined 75% Over Past 25 years”, 2013). These positivity rates should be a call to employers that they must be cognizant of prescription drug abuse as well as illicit drug use among their employees, as both can pose many...

Neuroenhancement; Stimulants in the Classroom

...stimulants, are most often prescribed to people who’ve been diagnosed with ADHD. Students are the main focus of this research paper because data supports the claim that neuroenhancers are often used to improve performance in the classroom. There are positive and negative results that come from the use of neuroenhancing medication. A qualitative study by Margaret Talbot examines a Harvard student and includes personal insight from an Adderall user that earned a college degree. If a student doesn’t have access to prescribed neuroenhancers, and has a hard time focusing on schoolwork, is the student similar to someone with bad vision and no access glasses? The current situation in our information based economy with a growing need for higher education puts prescribed users of neuroenhancement at an academic advantage over people with similar neurological characteristics and no prescription. Defining the Drug ADHD medication has an intended purpose to improve the ability for the user to focus on a given task. More specifically, “stimulants increase the activity of the sympathetic nervous system; making students feel more alert.” (Schoenfeld and Konopasek, 15) Many students suffer from fatigue or a short attention span yet aren’t diagnosed with ADHD. These students deserve a chance to receive cognitive enhancing medicinal “boost” just as much as any other student. Schoenfeld and Konopasek explained, “Stimulant medications for ADHD work by altering the way certain...
