One of the most endangered species in the world is the Amur Leopards. One of these big cats can leap 20 feet, run up to 37 miles per hour, and are strong climbers and swimmers. The leopards live best in cold and snowy environments, which is why they are indigenous to eastern Russia, northern China, and Korea. Erin Blakemore, an author from Smithsonian.com, writes about how this species has begun slowly inch back from the edge of extinction. Amur Leopards are dangerously close to extinction. In 2007, a meer 37 of these animals were living in northeast Asia. In a preservation effort, a national park for the leopards was opened in 2012. Since then, the leopards numbers have nearly doubled; a census taken in 2015 reports 57 leopards in the national …show more content…
Humans have surpassed their carrying capacity and have overpopulated earth, while other species, like the Amur Leopards, are trying their best not to die out. It is because of this that this subject made its way to the media. This impressive rebound is further proof that with protected habitats, extinction can be avoided. It is crucial to try to maintain the ecosystem as is because the organisms in the ecosystem rely on one another for survival. If the Amur Leopards died out, there would be an overpopulation of their prey, and its food source would underopulate. This is avoided, however, if conservation efforts are made to protect the Amur leopard …show more content…
Camera traps use infrared sensors to capture photos of organisms, and n the case of Amur Leopards, allow scientists to identify individuals organisms in the population. A camera trap is effective for this purpose because it is “non-invasive, incurs minimal environmental disturbance, is robust to variation in ground conditions and climate and, most importantly, can be used to gain information on highly cryptic species and in difficult terrain where other field methods are likely to fail.” These camera traps and their technology allow scientists to monitor the progress of the Amur Leopard population, a feat that would have been impossible without this scientific improvement. Had it not been for the combined efforts of conservation groups and camera traps, then the Amur Leopards may be

...Noah Tiedemann 8-19-15 7th Endangered Species The Amur Leopard Have you ever had a leopard-skin coat, or purse? You know, generally orange fur with black spots? It?s stereotypically worn by regular connoisseurs of lust and debauchery. Hopefully you haven?t. It makes me cringe whenever I see one for sale or being worn by some ignorant bimbo. I just don?t see the appeal. Nevertheless, it?s a profitable business, and humanity is greedy, ignorant, and occasionally sociopathic; thus, the Amur Leopards are a highly endangered species. The Amur Leopard specifically is in especially dire straits, with their species only having around 60 remaining individuals, excluding those in captivity. Contrary to the norm for leopard habitats, this species resides...

...the “Panthera Pardus Orientalis,” or otherwise known as the Amur leopard. This big wild cat is a very rare type of leopard that has been reducing drastically in its population for many years and is now known as one of the rarest animals in our world. An average male Amur leopard weights about 180 pounds while the female leopards weight about 120 pounds. Their long and slender bodies are covered with a brownish yellow coat that contains black spots or markings called ‘rosettes’ while their underparts are usually white in color with black spots. These rosettes are each made up of 3 or 4 black spots on the outside with a yellowish brown center and there are no two leopards that have the same markings and their underparts are usually white in color with black spots . The...

...When a question like “where do leopards live?” rises, many would rapidly assume that leopards would inhabit places like the African landscapes. It becomes curious for many to discover that Amur leopards have actually preferred to populate a place like the “ice cold forests of north-east Russia.” “Poaching, habitat loss, small biological diversity, and competition for food.” are bringing the Amur leopard to be “on the brink of extinction.” The fur of this beautiful feline is highly attractive to those involved in illicit businesses, “specifically to those in China.” There is a “two-years prison sentence” that is for many Russian poachers “apparently worth the risk.” Amur Leopards are confined for protection to “live on The Land of the Leopard...

...Critically endangered is one of the worst words to use when describing a species and its status, apex predator is no longer the first thing that comes to mind when one hear the name Amur Leopard.
