Shu Ting compares an assembly line to several different things. The first thing that Ting compares an assembly line to is the stars in the sky; the stars form lines in the sky. Ting also compares the trees alongside the road, to an assembly road. As the trees are “standing numb.” One might also say Shu TIng compares the people walking home to an assembly line, as the people walking home are “Stripped of their colour and shape.”
These comparisons make the mood of the poem very melancholy, as Shu TIng talks about how day after day, the workers just work. The speaker even admits they’re numb to their own existence.
