Do you remember how it felt to open a Facebook or an Instagram account for the first time? Having access to your friend’s status felt like finding water in mars and checking your Facebook or Instagram might had been part of your daily priority tasks. At first, for many people this action of constantly using technology to be socially aware of one’s surroundings might have seem harmless but for others, it may have turned into a Technology addiction. Some of the author’s rhetorical appeals were more effective than others. In this article, she doesn’t appeal to the audience emotions with visual aids, personal testimony or memory sensory words as much she uses reliable data to support her claims. She should display rather than just let the reader know the effects that technological dependence has in one’s personality. At the beginning of the article, the author appeals to pathos by asking the reader “Are your Facebook friends more interesting than those you have in real life? (1)” This question is meant to make the reader feel a part of the issue. Many people will answer yes to this question because if the audience uses this available info from Facebook to be aware of their relative, then their friend will probably look more interesting in Facebook. This type question appeals to the audience by pathos, this motivates the reader to keep reading. However, she should have describe that question on the low latter of abstraction by using vivid words and describing some examples of what makes Facebook friends more “interesting” (1). She could have improve her technique by quoting some testimonies from young teenagers that have experience this kind of addiction. She first starts with some data that reflect the extensive manner in which people use technology. She used the research from University of Melbourne, where the use of technology affected students negatively, to support her claim. In the research, the teenagers showed signs of having “problematic internet and gambling behaviors (5).” She comments that “Technology use was clearly interfering with the students’ daily lives, but it may be going too far to call it an addiction”, and then agrees that the unmoderated use of technology can turn into a dependence (6). Parker also back up her claim that reducing the use of technology will eventually reduce one’s dependence of it. She says that this issue “is similar to an eating disorder” to later on recommend that one will “ have to learn moderation and controlled use” in order to deal with this phenomenon (12).
