Steroids Anabolic steroids have plagued the world of sports for decades, and even while there have been numerous technological and research advances towards finding efficient and innovative ways to interrupt anabolic steroid abusers’ efforts, the number of cases are still on the rise. Just as enforcers are trying to find more efficient ways to prevent steroid abuse in the world of sports, athletes are finding different ways to camouflage the substance as well as new methods to creep by drug testing. In the end, some athletes are desperate to find ways to have an upper hand against the competition, regardless of the possible risks and/or consequence that …show more content…
Many athletes are always on the look out for supplements that will give him or her the ability to stand out from their competition. Today, there seems to be a supplement for anything and everything no matter what one’s goal may be, and if a salesmen is persuasive enough, he or she can make a person believe that supplementing their training program and/or diet with ergogenic aids is a necessity to be successful in their venture. Anabolic steroids fit into the category of an ergogenic aid in various ways. The main reason is because “Anabolic steroids are synthetically produced variants of the naturally occurring male hormone testosterone that are abused in an attempt to promote muscle growth, enhance athletic or other physical performance, and improve physical appearance” (GetSmartAboutDrugs). The fact that using anabolic steroids may enhance a person’s athletic performance is why the substance is an ergogenic …show more content…
The anabolic effect that steroids introduce into the body increase muscle building and bone maturity allowing the user to see results quickly. Steroids also increase fat free body mass, as well as increase muscle size and strength. It is a common misconception that steroids and HGH are one in the same, however, research has proven that they are very different; the main difference being that HGH has not been proven to show significant results in younger, athletic individuals, but rather in older adults. HGH is also a hormone already flowing through one’s body rather than a synthetic version of naturally occurring testosterone. That difference has been confirmed to reflect significantly higher risks associated with steroid use. The medical risks associated with steroid use are severe, and much more frightening to think about than investing more significant amounts of time in training naturally. In the end, steroids are a battle that seems to show no mercy in the sports world. Steroids are illegal in sports for reasons discussed throughout this document, and those reasons seem to have research and proven studies to back the decision to make such substances illegal. It is up to regulatory officials to keep fighting the battle against performance enhancing drugs such as anabolic steroids so that athletes have fair

... The documentary took an objective stance on the use of anabolic steroids where the National Institute on Drug Abuse defines anabolic-androgenic steroids as, “a synthetic variant of the male sex hormone testosterone and that “anabolic” refers to muscle-building and “androgenic” refers to increased male sexual characteristics.” The use of anabolic steroids for sports/recreation is illegal and is considered by the United States as a controlled substance, however the use of anabolic steroids for medical use is legal. The ethical question I am asking is, “how can the United States “claim” that the use of anabolic steroids for medical reasons be ethical and can “help” someone when they “claim” that the use of anabolic steroids for sports/recreation to be unethical and will “hurt” someone?” In order to take an objective stance I will use three of the five ethical lenses provided in class. The five ethical lenses that were provided in class are: the Utilitarian Approach, the Rights Approach, the Fairness or Justice Approach, the Common Good Approach, and the Virtue Approach. I will first use the ethical lens for the Rights Approach. After reading A Framework for Thinking Ethically the reading defined the Rights Approach as, “One has the right to choose freely what one does with their life.” From this definition I believe it is ethically fine for someone to have the “right” use anabolic steroids for both medical use and sports/recreation use because every individual...

...Comp I 4/26 /13 Steroids in Sports Should athletes be allowed to use performance-enhancing drugs in order to improve their performance? Steroid usage in sports has long been a real big issue for many athletes both professional and amateur. Steroids are not allowed in any sport however; some athletes do take the chance by using performance-enhancing drugs in order to increase the chances of a successful outcome in a competition. Many athletes have been banned from participating in certain sports because they were convicted of taking steroids. In light of this, one can only wonder how many top athletes have won events due to the use of steroids. There are many sides to the debate of whether or not athletes should be able to use steroids. Despite health reasons there are quite a few people who do believe that athletes should be allowed to use performance- enhancers. On the other hand, there are those who believe that steroids should not be used. First, in the current sports arena , professional athletes are known to have well paid salaries and because steroids have the potential to improve performances and to heal injuries, it is not surprising that research activities have been enhanced to develop better and acceptable alternatives for testosterone. The Germans had started taking steroids during the 1960s in order ...

...cheat in sports is to use anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are drugs that increase muscle mass and strength. The use of these substances such as Winstrol, are banned substances in almost every single sport. There are many health problems when using steroids. Some of these problems are premature balding, blood-clotting disorders, birth defects, and many other problems to the human body. Users of anabolic steroids may also experience “roid rage” where the user becomes much more hostile and angry which may proceed to violence. In recent years many famous sports players have been caught using these dugs. One was Lance Armstrong, a famous biker whose career is now ruined now that he was caught. They took away all of his awards and titles that he worked hard to get. His whole career in biking is essentially over, all because he used steroids. Though they are abused by many athletes, non-anabolic steroids have many medical uses. One of these uses is to heal muscles in patients recovering from certain cancers and illnesses. Another use of steroids is to reduce inflammation in people with asthma and osteoarthritis. Another way is to prevent anemia. Anabolic steroids can be very dangerous if abused. ...[Debate 3: Steroid Use in Professional Sports] | A view opposing the use of steroids | Merriam-Webster defines a steroid as “any of numerous natural or synthetic compounds containing a 17-carbon 4-ring system and including the sterols and various hormones and glycosides.” A more specific steroid is called an anabolic steroid. The definition for Anabolic steroid is “a class of man-made drugs that are chemically related to the male hormone testosterone.” Anabolic steroids are more accurately called anabolic-androgenic steroids. This name defines their two principle characteristics. Anabolic means to synthesize or build up; thus anabolic steroids increase skeletal muscle mass. Androgenic means involving male sexual characteristics. Anabolic steroids are related to testosterone and affect the body in many of the same ways as testosterone. As of 2009, not a single anabolic steroid had been manufactured that was free of negative side effects. In many developing countries, anabolic steroids can be purchased without a prescription. However, in the United States, they have been controlled substances since 1991. Possession of an anabolic steroid without a prescription is illegal and can result in a maximum one-year prison sentence and a minimum fine of $1,000 fine for the first offense. Steroids only purpose for the professional athlete is to artificially boost muscle mass and power. Why Do Professional Athletes Use Steroids?

...Professional athletes are the best of the best, but should they be able to use steroids to make themselves that much better? Using steroids to enhance performance and physique has been and is very popular among athletes. Many times, athletes view steroids as the main contributing factor in efforts to reach the highest level in their profession. Steroids are not good for sports as they have an impact in the world bigger than the effect on each individual steroid user. Sports have been seen as a display of pure skill and talent, but with an integration of steroids, that model is hard to tell as athletes become bigger, faster, and stronger. Steroids should be avoided in sports because they create unfair advantages, affect the integrity of the sport, and lead to poor choices in younger ages as the professional athletes are seen as popular role models. Steroids have been supported by multiple people and continue to lead to discussions as to whether or not they belong in professional sports. Being among the greats takes years of practice and raw skill...

...Anabolic Steroids: A Perceived Means to Perfection At what point does the quest for perfection become an obsession? In the world of athleticism, the point of mania is usually when a person turns to performance enhancement by means of ergogenic aids. An ergogenic aid is anything that enhances a person’s athletic abilities. Examples of ergogenic aids are vitamins, foods, caffeine, and the most controversial anabolic steroids. Anabolic Steroids have sparked worldwide interest in the media because of the potential dangers associated with usage and moreover the fact that steroids are illegal in the professional sports arena. Anabolic steroids are classified as ergogenic aids, because they are chemically made substances that promote increased stamina when training, resulting in greater amounts of fat free mass and overall strength. The use of anabolic steroids has evolved into further drug experimentation and dependence, destroying the most critical aspect and fundamental of training “quality vs. quantity,” thus creating a “by any means necessary” athletic society. What Are the Affects of Steroid Use on Athletic Performance? Over the last five years several allegations and indictments have been made against athletes for their use of performance enhancing drugs. According to Steven M. Cohen, “Athletes use these drugs to enhance athletic performance, but not in the manner one might assume. Anabolic steroids won't make an athlete “better” at his or her sport. Steroids aren't...

You may decide that the benefits aren't worth the risks. What is a drug? | A drug is a chemical substance that, when absorbed into the body, can alter normal bodily function.   Many drugs have been banned in sport if they are deemed to provide an unfair advantage, pose a health risk, or are seen to violate the ‘spirit of sport’.  The use of banned drugs by athletes is referred to as ‘doping’.  The International Olympic Committee (IOC), and more recently, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) have been leading the way in the battle against drugs in sport. | Why do some athletes use drugs? | Most athletes take drugs to enhance their physical performance in an attempt to prevent them falling behind other competitors, even if it does mean damaging their health and risking their sports careers.  Other athletes may use drugs to help them wind down and relax, to cope with the pressures and stress associated with a constant battle to win all the time, to boost their own self-esteem and confidence, to mask the pain of certain sports injuries, to control and reduce weight, and to hide the use of any other banned substances. |   What types of drugs and methods are used by athletes...
